...Everyone has something in their life that they love to do. For me, it’s hockey. I have played the sport since I was seven years old, and it has giving me many great experiences and opportunities. Until one day, everything changed. I woke up in a hospital bed with no recollection of what happened to me. My parents overwhelmed me with hugs and called in the doctor to explain what happened. During my scrimmage, I was checked into the boards and severely injured. I had a concussion and had ruptured my spleen. The concussion explained why I couldn’t remember and I still couldn’t understand what I was going through. Naturally, the first thing I asked was, “Can I still play?”. The doctor put his head down and answered quietly, “No”. I was out for the season....

...definitely taught me how to be responsible over the years I have had him. Huntley, who is my whole family’s dog, is not specifically all my responsibility. However, because of my parents’ busy schedules, caring for him was primarily done by me. Everyday I would need to feed him breakfast and dinner, let him outside, take him on walks, etc. When he was a puppy, he required much more work such as cleaning up his accidents in the house as well as training him not to do it again. Now, although I don’t need to do those things anymore, he still requires a lot of effort to get under control. Because of Huntley, I am now more responsible with my belongings, others’ belongings, and finishing tasks, which is quite important. In addition,...

...The Hockey Sweater In Roch Carrier’s The Hockey Sweater a young boy is infatuated with hockey. He talks about it as if it is his whole life. As someone who does not play hockey it was hard for me to understand why this boy is so captivated by his sport. After reading a passage from the history museum’s website, a quote from the author about the town helped me to understand how important hockey was to the community by describing the tight knit society and time period. The story takes place in a small town in Quebec called Sainte-Justine, which has a population of approximately 2000 and is set during world war two. To them, with no television and limited entertainment because of the war, isolation and time period; the love of hockey keeps hope,...

...Hockey has become a more expensive sport to play over the last years, and families can barely afford to keep their children in hockey anymore. People wonder why this is but there is a logical reason behind it. New technologies to improve the equipment have been invented, inflation on other things such as utilities, gas, food and salaries is the main reason for this problem. It has come to the point that families discourage their children to play ice hockey in favor of other, cheaper, sports. To buy new skates, a family is looking to invest between $500.00-$950.00 dollars, depending on the quality. Other popular sports that competes with hockey for practitioners have an massive advantage by being so much cheaper. This is a massive problem, and it has led to talented youngsters having to quit the sport they love because of their family’s financial situation. By doing research and comparing different options there might be a solution to...

...Saul’s root causes are his trauma. “All that I knew of Indian died in the winter of 1961, when I was eight years old” (Wagamese 8). In the novel Indian Horse written by Richard Wagamese, a young lad named Saul has faced a lot of traumas throughout his life. In this essay I will be sharing with you what I believe are the root causes of Saul trauma. Sauls main cause of his trauma is the loss of his families/communities, the loss of them brought forth even more trauma like; his time spent at St. Jerome’s residential school, his time with the game of hockey and, the alcohol that destroyed his life. ...Historical Film Prompt: Miracle The film Miracle is about the U.S men’s ice hockey team winning the 1980 gold metal for the Winter Olympics, led by head coach Herb Brooks. Miracle was fairly accurate with its historic content during the course of the movie. The director Gavin O’Connor did a good job tying in historical and political background that brought the film together, which made it unique to other sport films. In the beginning of the film there was a sequence highlighting the historical events that lead up to the 1980 Winter Olympics. Miracle specifically opened up with the historical footage against the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Our country endured the time where it was divided because of the support of the Vietnam War. To make things worst, the 1970’s was also a hard time for the United States. The United States had to deal President Richard Nixon’s Watergate Scandal during the year of 1974. A scene in the movie showed a headline saying “5 were arrested in connection to GOP.” Later stating that President Richard Nixon had resigned from office, making him the first president to step down. And the following years lead up to another problem known as the hostage crisis in Iran during 1979 to the 80’s. The film also accurately portrayed the oil crises in the film multiple times. The oil crisis was mentioned early on in the film and in the middle when the coaches were at a gas station filling up their bus. At the gas station there was a sign that announced that the gas station...

...One of the blessings my dad let me do when I was younger, was go out hunting with him and my extended family. We always hunt as a group during the hunting season and I absolutely love it. Since I have been hunting for quit a few years now, and have been able to learn from my grandpa and uncles, I feel I have inherited an abundant amount of knowledge when it comes to hunting. They have taught me the basics and the advanced skills to hunting. Their wisdom in teaching me has payed off, and I have succeeded in getting deer over my hunting career. Water skiing When I was twelve years old my grandpa took me, my brother, and my cousins water skiing. My uncle grew up water skiing and he is definitely an expert. He can even put the rope on one foot and ski with the other. Although I do not have the advanced skills to do that yet, I have learned to water ski with one foot and am rather good at it now. I would even say I have excelled above my older brother and cousin. Water skiing has actually become rather easy and I am trying to do new tricks to make it more challenging....

...it all began. That's why I promised my parents I'd get an education, graduate, and get myself out of there. I guess for a kid from the hood, I'm living the American Dream. The only problem is, whatever American had this dream probably wasn't where I'm from. And if he was, he should've mentioned the part about how when brothers start getting a little money, stuff starts getting a little weird like in my neighborhood. Sometimes I feel like a bit of an oddity. [amplified] And if you look to your left, you'll see the mythical and majestic Black Family out of their natural habitat and yet still thriving. Go ahead and wave. They'll wave right back. - Woman: They're smiling. Hi. Hello. - Man: The little ones are cute. They're just just amazing. Sometimes I worry that, in an effort to make it, black folks have dropped a little bit of their culture and the rest of the world has picked it up. They even renamed it "Urban". And in the "Urban" world, Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke are R&B Gods, Kim Kardashian's the symbol for big butts, and asian guys are just unholdable on the dance floor. Come on! Big butts? R&B and dancing? Those were the black man's go-tos! - [tires screech] - I'm definitely not complaining. I love my life. And not that I want to go back to the days of being the big scary black guy. But I have to admit it did kind of have its advantages. SO1EO1 "Pilot" Even though we were close, my Pops had a weird way of showing he loved me. Hey,...

...Violence in ice hockey has been an identifying staple in the sport since “the first hockey leagues formed in the mid-1880’s,” (Ice Hockey Origins, Growth and Changes in the Game). Since the modern era of hockey, and the creation of the Stanley Cup, hockey has been viewed as one of the most violent sports in western civilization. Clarence Campbell, former NHL President has even said that “[w]ithout violence, there would be no such thing as hockey,” (Coakley). To an extent hockey is unmatched in illegal assaults by any other sport, in both amateur and professional leagues, (Colburn). This does not mean that the contact in other sports is not as intense as hockey, for example rugby and football are both very “violent” sports, but this “violence” is carried out within the rules of the game. Hockey is different because it allows fistfights, which are acts of violence that are carried out outside the rules of the game. Hockey fights occur during stoppages of play, or if one breaks out during the play, the play is whistled down immediately in order to break up the fight. What makes this phenomenon interesting is the fact that in many amateur leagues and most professional leagues a five-minute penalty is assessed to the players involved in a fight. In other sports, where similar interactions between players do occur occasionally, an immediate ejection from the game is the penalty. What this does is “tacitly permit fighting by imposing a relatively lenient penalty,” (Colburn). During...

...Case 1: Miracle Case Study Coach Herb Brooks is an exemplary leader who was decisive to the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team winning the gold medal. In this movie, Kurt Russell plays Herb Brooks, the US team coach whose hard-nosed approach turns a group of undisciplined college players into an extraordinary and inspiring hockey team. Coach Brooks uses many characteristics that describe his approach to leadership. First characteristic would be that Brooks was very inspiring which is a positive characteristic and is consistent with TLC’s characteristics of exemplary leaders. Coach Brooks inspires confidence in his team by presenting a convincing game plan for beating the Soviets by showing the U.S. team complete faith that they can beat them. Brooks has a very inspiring speech before the Russian game by saying “if we play them ten times they might wine nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight we are the greatest hockey team in the world!.” The U.S. team was very inspired and regardless of how intimidating the rival team was, Coach Brooks was able to carry his group of players all the way to Gold Medal. Other characteristics that describe Brooks are intelligent, determined, and very ambitious. Coach proves at the end of the movie that he was indeed intelligent and that his game plan was credible all along. He didn’t have many believers initially, but he sure proved the world wrong. Coach Brooks is not your typical coach; he uses many different approaches to build his team by making...

...On one side it was awesome! But on the other side, there was this pressure bearing on him that if he didn’t play well, this team could lose. Mike has practiced, on his shot, his stride, his stick handling, just about everything to get ready for this moment, he knew he couldn’t let his nerves defeat his skill. Coach Rich then came into the room and made sure everybody was dressed. Mike strapped on his helmet and put on his gloves, he was ready. Coach Rich gave a 10 minute speech before the game about how to give 110% every shift, and how important it would be to win puck battles if they were going to win. At the end of the speech, the Bulldogs gathered together in a circle. This is it, Mike thought. Time to show them what you’re made of. The Bulldogs put their hands in the middle. “1, 2, 3, Bulldogs!” They yelled, and they marched out of the locker and on to the ice. Immediately, Mike felt alive as he skated circles around their half of the ice as they banged their sticks in unison. He looked over the to the other side of the rink at the Taylorville Tornadoes, and changed his thoughts about the game. He suddenly didn’t feel the need for his own stats, he just wanted his team to win the...
