...The Dave Matthews Band When I think of The Dave Matthews Band, I also think of their jazzy pop rock music that has helped them become a musical sensation. The band consists of jazz and classical musicians and of course, Dave Matthews. Their music and songs are very unique and have not been heard before the band came about. They have touched millions of people’s hearts, especially mine. The fact that they sing about real situations and real issues that are going on the world today is what makes them my favorite band. Whether I am happy, sad, or mad, The Dave Matthews Band’s album “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King” always lifts my spirits and puts me in a better mood; their songs are inspirational. One of the songs that touch me the most is called “Funny the Way It Is”. This song is about the good and bad things going on in the world. The point being made is that even though many wonderful things are happening, bad things are occurring at the exact same time. “Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ On a soldier's last breath, his baby's being born/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ Somebody's broken heart become your favorite song/ Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out” Not only does it discuss the fine times and poor times in life, but also how people take the privileges they have for granted. While kids...

...you get older you experience many things throughout life and wonder why things happen. Everyday we are judged for being ourselves; having a loud laugh, not fashionable, etc. We live in a free country, but yet we get judged by our actions on the daily. We should be able to express ourselves and not worry about the others judging us. Communicating to each other and a little bit of humor wouldn't hurt every once in a while would it? “The land of the free and home to the brave.” I am very thankful to call the United States my home. It gives many races a chance to better themselves, and also a better life. I am so gratified that I am able to go to school and get the education I need. It's not everyday you hear that, but what if we lived in a country like China, that picked what you did? Our government would be extremely strict on everything we did, and we wouldn’t be able to do what we wanted as individuals. Think of things we wouldn't be able to do if we weren't a free country? I may not be able to give my opinion, hangout with my friends, or communicate with other individuals. It's the little things that matter....

...experience. During this experience I gave up drinking soda and only replaced it with water. I took a personality test and learned a lot about why I am the way that I am. Also, I started journaling for my emotional health and well being. I was challenged because I thought that overall I had a pretty open mind and was relatively good at thinking through things critically. Through my personality test I was seen to be someone to avoid conflict, which naturally mean that I am not great at looking at things critically. I am very good at taking things at face value and that I believe is one of my weaknesses when it comes to critical thinking. Through this experience though I have identified that weakness and been able to learn and understand different ways in which to think through something critically and it has given me better insight into many of my everyday encounters. I personally am addicted to soda, this is my caffeine intake and so I suppose it is the caffeine that I am addicted to. In order to incorporate the ILP into my everyday starting with body, I chose to remove soda from my diet and replace it with water. At first it was a struggle. I believed that I would just be able to stop and have no issues and that I would feel better for doing so. I was very wrong. I had to wean off of it slowly. When I decided to quit drinking it cold turkey I would get these horrible headaches and was so very tired. Although I wanted to give up I did not. I simply started over and gave up...

...a part of the country that really got destroyed, is very poor, or has nothing to live in and go help build them up with your good spirits and kindness. That I feel that help would make many people happy and it’s a call from god because he wants us to help the community and others as he did. You can always make something good if you put your mind, body, and spirit to it and always look at the positive sides of everything. If everything is always negative then why ever be positive about something? When Therese found out her dad was sick she knew that she could look and lean on one person; God. She knew he would help her throughout it all. What ended up happening was that Therese strived for child like faith from god when her dad was sick. I feel Therese really needed people to give her attention, talk to her, and show her she is strong and could get through it. God became a “fatherly figure” to her, and I think that is a really heart warming thing. Sometimes people strive for that attention for some people that they act childish, and that can be essential to your faith. Chapter 4: A Mother At Heart The material spirit in me looks like I am called to give to others. I feel that doing exactly what god did to us by giving to others, everyone should do. I love community service and love showing others I care for them. I like volunteering at...

...“Why college education is important to me” Continuing my education has been a goal of mine for some time, but I haven’t made the commitment until now. There are several reason why I chose to return to school after so long, the primary reason being advancement opportunities in my career. My other motivating factor is my daughter. I am looking forward to the knowledge I will gain and the ability to implement that knowledge into my everyday life. In the past year, I have been searching for advancement opportunities with my current employer. I have found that the majority of available positions that I am interested in require a degree. Although not all open positions that I’ve applied for have required a degree, a significant number of the applicants had already obtained their degrees, and those were the individuals who were selected for employment. I have come to a point in my life where I realize that in order for me to get the career I want, I will need to obtain my degree. Although my primary reason for returning to school to continue my education is for employment opportunities, being a positive role model and influence for my daughter is equally important. Each day I strive to make decisions that will have a positive impact on my life, as well as hers. I stress the importance and value of education to her constantly. Although I’ve emphasized the importance of education, I feel that obtaining my degree would...

...and Adulthood Stage: (Trust) I have always had an issue with trust when I was a little girl, at age 12 years old I and I still do at the age of 27 years old. There are always negative and positive things that are my outcome with trust and mistrust. I have fear of trust, because at the age of 12 years old I was raped by a 50 year old man. I am able to talk about it now because I gave all my pain to God and allowed him to fight my battles. 10 years ago I was not able to talk about what I am going through because I kept everything bottled up and it cause me a lot of hurt and pain. It was so bad that I did not what to live my life anymore but after having along talk with my God. I can truly say that I am thankful to be here, I am thankful for my daughter and my son that I lost and I know that all things happen for a reason. ...changed my life. I was in a near fatal car accident, air lifted to Baptist Hospital, unconscious, and spent the next 41 days in the hospital. Once I became conscious again, 11 days later, I was moved from the ICU to another part of the hospital, called the STICHT Center, and then I had to learn how to do everything again. This tragic accident has not only made me a stronger person but it has made me appreciate the simplicities in life a little more. I ran a stop sign and was t-boned in the passenger side; I then hit the median, flipped and ran into a telephone pole. That was the instance that changed my life, forever. At that time I inquired a Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI, and that was why I had to learn how to do everything again. It was almost like a stroke, only one side of my body was damaged, and that was my right side. When I was in the ICU on life support my family tells me that I moved my left side just fine but I could not move my right side at all. Finally, in the ICU, I started to move my right leg a little. It was...

...My name is Tina and I am a senior, I just graduated last quarter. Today I’d like to share with you about the verse phillipians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. There are so many key words in this verse, and today I want to share about “thanksgiving” and “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding”. Last quarter when I reviewed the survival kit with leann, it is very interesting to read what I wrote four years ago. There was a question asking “what is your biggest temptation?” and I was quite surprised that I had wrote: “comparing with other people”, because I almost forgot it was a huge struggle for me when I was a freshman. As you may know, Chinese people are really into competition. I remembered I used to compare myself with my roommate a lot. She is a "Christian” but she spent all her Fridays partying. But she is so pretty and popular. She had many more friends than me, she had better grades than me and she had many channel bags… And my biggest struggle is, why does she have everything I don’t have but yet she is not even praying to God or requesting anything! This struggle stayed with me through my freshman year because I realized that coming to bible study and worship God on Sundays cannot draw me closer to being “popular” and I was somehow wondering...

I can say I barely knew my name and how old I was. The first day of school began with a simple introduction on learning how to write my name. I can still remember how difficult it was to spell out my name! Man it was hard. I remember walking into class that scary morning and meeting a lady who would change my little world forever. Her name was Mrs. Guevara. She was an angel in my eyes. Mrs. Guevara’s lessons were fun and educational. She taught us many songs, for example the ABC’S she taught us the vowels and how to pronounce them. At first I would get so frustrated for not being able to pronounce them properly, but over time I was able to accomplish that....

...wisdom, and live a spontaneous life. Watching my parents grow old from when I was a little girl till now has really put thought to mind, and be thankful, and happy for what I have. “The View from Eighty” by Malcolm Cowley, “Aging Gracefully, the French Way” by Ann M. Morrison, and “Aging” by Kimberly C. Wheeler shows, and teaches us that time will not wait for no one. Use it to your fullest ability. And telling us the wonders of getting old. Being the youngest of four siblings was always great. But I never understood why my parents waited so long to conceive their last child (me). My brothers, and sisters have me by thirteen years or more. And my parents had me when they were thirty-eight. I had asked why they had waited so long to have me. At some point I did not think I was planned. But they told me, being that they have already had children out of their marriage, they felt they would be blessed to have one more in marriage. It took them a while to decide, but they also had other thing they had wanted to change about them self. And to have a child, these are thing that was a must do. Changing their diet, because eating habits were bad. Cutting on the partying, because they’re not getting any younger, and last but not least, stop all smoking, and drinking habits. Because knowing at their age, having a child all while continuing these disgusting obsessions, they would not have had the healthy baby I am now. Seeing them at age 60 today, is a sight for sore eyes. They do not look...
