...Compensation for NCAA Division I Student Athletes Mark Dunkley PEP 461 Student The College at Brockport Abstract This paper weighs in the pros and cons for the compensation of Division I college student athletes. This paper also introduces a plan that would allow monetary compensation of college athletes in the United States. A survey was distributed to 14 males of the Suny College at Brockport basketball team Pros and Cons of Compensation for NCAA Division I Student Athletes The exploits of student-athletes in sports have variously been advanced as generating a lot of dollars in forms of revenues for their respective institutions, which has generally raised the question as to why they shouldn’t be compensated for their sporting prowess. Student-athletes generate tens of millions of dollars for their respective athletic departments and ideally then should be reimbursed. However, as per the guidelines of the National Collegiate Athletics Associations (NCAA), athletes are not supposed to receive any commercial use of their personas and likenesses and are indeed not expected to gain any monetary compensation for their sporting engagements. This has generally been interpreted to mean that they cannot enter into agreements for endorsements in their sporting activities as has been the case with professional engagements. Instead, students are expected to benefit from the payment for tuition fees from their sporting activities. At some colleges, college athletics are a key source...

However, many experiences and studies found out that there are also several factors that affects the grades of students;...

...ENGL 111-05C-C1 Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne, Indiana 46835 Dear Professor Royce- I am writing this cover letter to you as a part of the Informative essay assignment for English 111. I choose to write about the current debate over whether college athletes should be paid for their time and effort while playing their chosen sport at colleges and universities across America. I received only one peer review on Blackboard, and was underwhelmed by the response that I received. Jairret Boyce was the only classmate that responded to my essay, and in his peer review, he merely agreed that I did everything well. This was not very helpful in the completion of my final draft for this assignment. The only helpful feedback that I received was from you, with the notes that you made on my first draft, with the most important information being that my thesis statement would not work because I presented it in the form of a question. I made the proper changes to my thesis statement to make sure that it shows the two different sides to the debate that I writing about to inform my audience. After receiving the grade for my essay in writing project two, I wanted to make sure that I did a better job with my Works Cited page. I went to the library, and was shown Noodle tools, and made sure to use that resource to make sure I completed a quality Works Cited page for this assignment. ...Ethical Analysis of the Student-Athlete Compensation Dilemma Group 2: Julie Burnett Christopher Fincham Revati Kailasam Catherine Kondo Teresa Seim Ethics and Professionalism in Accounting Andrew Dill ACG 6835 Fall 2013 Introduction The college sports industry is a large industry in America which is estimated to produce $797 million dollars for the 2012-13 season (NCAA). Of these millions, not one penny will go to any of the 400,000 plus college athletes under NCAA rules (NCAA). This however, was not always the case. Prior to the formation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1906, student groups frequently hired players without the stipulation that they must also be students at the university (NCAA). Due to these circumstances and poorly regulated play that often led to injuries, the NCAA was established to provide a safe and fair ‘playing field’ for student-athletes. However, today this regulatory board is not seen as beneficial by all members of society, and is especially negatively scrutinized by top performing student-athletes. In 2005, NCAA Football had an estimated total attendance of over 43 million compared to the NFL of over 17 million, while NCAA Basketball had estimated total attendance of over 30 million compared to the NBA of over 21 million (Humphys, 2008). Despite having more viewers, college athletes received no pay while professional players earned millions. This has prompted college athletes to argue that the NCAA regulations...

The final score was LSU- 41 UGA - 44. The debate of should college athletes get paid to play has been going on for years. Even under heavy pressure from players and sports anchors, the NCAA, the National College Athletes Association, has kept the policy of athletes not getting paid, and this is the correct response by the NCAA. College athletes, who are offered and accept sport scholarships, understand that the job of an athlete is to win the championship and bring in money for the school; therefore, they should not get paid. College scouts often offer star...

...My topic is on whether or not college football players should get paid to play football. I feel like this is a topic that a lot of football players that is transitioning from high school to college discuss frequently. There has been a few controversies on if college football players have been paid under the table. When you hear that they have been paid under the table, it means that either the college they have chosen has given them money secretively, the head football coach paid them out of their own pockets, or even someone they know personally has paid them to play for that school. College football players should not be paid to play football. There are many reasons on why they should not get paid. When you hear a certain college name, the first thing you hear come out of someone’s mouth is something about how good or bad their football team is. Football players are shown a lot of attention. On their campuses they are very well known, whether or not if they play in the games or sit on the sidelines. Most college football players end up getting a full ride to school because they play football. If they are not paying for school out of pocket, they shouldn’t get paid to do something they are supposed to do. Another reason why they shouldn’t get paid to play football is the fact that other teams that play sports on the campus don’t get paid. Why out of all teams, football should be the one to get paid. For example, a baseball team on the campus might be better than the football...

...unique event. The event has modernized from the 19th century. The high jump has certain rules an athlete must follow to be able to compete in the event. The different heights are chosen by the official personnel of the event during the meet. However the athlete and or competitor can chose to start at the standard height that the official set, or they can chose to pass to a higher height. Once the bar is raised it does not get lowered for anyone. Anytime an athlete has failed a height, they can chose to pass to the next height, but only if they do not use up all three of their three attempts. Also if they were to leave for another event without letting the official know, the bar would still be raised and they will not lower it and it will be considered as a pass for that height. At each height the jumpers are allowed three consecutive jumps, and if the athlete fails all three then the athlete is eliminated. Athletes are eliminated for knocking the bar off the supports, also known as the standards, and if they break the plain under the crossbar or beyond the standards. The athlete is given 90 seconds for each attempt; if it is not completed in that time it is considered as a failed attempt. When the high jump first started out, the jumpers used the techniques they used to keep themselves from getting hurt. Back then they didn’t have the safety that we have now a days. Back then the athletes jump over a wooden bar and landed into saw dust. Opposed to the safety regulations today, they...

...of Paying College Athletes 1. Purpose of Research & Analysis On April 25, 2014, the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., granted Northwestern University's request to review the decision made by the regional office recognizing the school's football players as employees. In mid-April, Northwestern football players voted as a team on whether or not to unionize, but the votes will only be opened if the board ends up siding with the players, which may take at least a couple of months. Ultimately, the Northwestern football players are determining their fate through this secret ballot and their decision to form the first union amongst college athletes—a decision that has the ability to change the landscape of American college sports. If granted the right to unionize, the Northwestern football team will actually have the ability to bargain over their conditions and it is expected that this could ultimately lead to requesting salary compensation for their efforts. In light of these recent historic discussions, it is critical to analyze not only the ethical, but also the economic impact of such potential situations. My research paper has been structured to shed some light into the challenging and complicated discussions that continue to occur around this topic. Specifically, I have broken my research and analysis into three key topics. First, I explore whether or not there is an underlying issue with the current state, from an economic perspective. Specifically, I answer various...

...entire life working up to this point; you are a college athlete. You are being paid to attend school and play your favorite sport for it. Your coach walks in with an upset look on his face. You think to yourself that it’s just going to be a difficult practice. Your coach actually tells you that you do not have practice today. You wont have practice ever again. Your entire life work gone, just like that. With your heart crushed, you cannot understand why the sport is just, canceled. You walk up to your coach and ask what the problem is. Your coach, as disappointed as you, tells you that the University board of athletics has decided to drop your “life” from the program to abide by the Title IX requirements and for not being a profitable program. This actually happened here at the University of Utah 50 years ago and it’s because there is a problem going on at Universities like The U and it is that men’s non-revenue sports, like wrestling, are being impacted negatively. Wresting is beginning to fade from colleges that are not in the Big Ten or the Ivy League, and Colleges like the University of Utah are participating in letting the sport diminish. In an article written by Coyte G. Cooper, “Involving the core product” “While there were 363 NCAA wrestling programs in 1981, the number of men’s wrestling programs offered by the NCAA had diminished to 234 in 2005.” Schools should stop making excuses for dropping the sport and making reasons on why to add. This is exactly what the University...
