...I decided to go to college because of several reasons. Accomplishing my future goals is the first one. So, by going to college I will know more about creating a realistic plan to achieve my goals. The second reason is learning more skills to improve myself such as collaboration, problem-solving, and leadership. These skills would help me in my future career. Besides accomplishing my goals and learning skills, developing lifelong connection is my third reason to go to college. Involving in on-campus activities and volunteering would help me to make connections with people, who have the same interest as me. Making connections with people would help me to learn more about myself. It would be advantageous to share knowledge with each other to get...

...Why? Prepared by Eric Norwood They say that sometimes good things come to those that wait and great things come to those that work. I once heard this myth that I find fascinating; as we get older we get wiser. No matter what the age, I think that getting and education is a wise decision. For many reasons, including an unstable economy, people over 40 are returning back to college campuses. Being a Senior Admissions Advisor at a Career College, I have had the privilege of witnessing this on a daily basis. As a 40 year old myself, I too have decided to return to college. That’s right I am going back to school. It is never too late to finish what you started. Why I chose to go back to school? I would be shocked if my reasons were not the same as most people. I could probably think of many reasons why I decided to go back to school. In this essay, I will share a few reasons. One personal reason is to finish what I started. In June 1996, I graduated with a B.S. in Sociology at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. In September 1996, I entered into graduate school for M.A. in Sociology, specializing in Industrial Relation. I completed two years of studies, including an internship at United States Postal Service (USPS). Following that, I got hired for the USPS, and quickly promoted through the ranks to the Office of Inspector General. I spent the next 12 years working as an Internal Auditor for the government. Life got in front of me, had an auditing career...

...In March my roommate, Kaitlyn Foley, had asked me who I was going to go on a date with. I had no idea what she was talking about, until I was given this assignment. When I received this assignment, I was very nervous. I did not know when, how, or who I was going to ask. I do not have the confidence to just ask someone out on a date. I was also in this weird stage in my life, where my feelings were in “limbo.” At the time I was getting over someone I had really liked for a long time and I wanted to stay away from everything that had to do with feelings. On April 23rd, I decided to take a walk to Houghton Garden. As I was walking, I decided that I needed to know what I wanted in a relationship, before i asked someone on a date. I made a list of what I want my next relationship to be based on. I wrote characteristics such as, trust, honesty, support, love, humor, and fun. As I was making the list, I instantly thought of one of my best friends, Daniel Mann. Dan and I met on the third day of school and spent the whole day together. Then we found out we were in the Emerging Leader Program (ELP). Throughout this year, I have had the opportunity to get to know, what an amazing person he is. As I was walking back to Boston College, I...

...Present and Future Paper I am the oldest Of 2 children I was born to Mrs Middleton and Mr Bowers. I was born in Indiana and was raised here in south Florida. At about the age of 11 is when I started to develop a love for animals my Mother was hoping that one day I would become a veterinarian seeing that I loved animals we at one point had 7 cats as well as hamsters so my mother use to tell me that seeing that I liked animals so much I should go into the field of working hands on with the animals. I graduated from Cooper City High school is 2000 and once I graduated I enrolled at Broward Community College just for a semester I had to leave Broward community college cause although I graduated I was unable to get my High School diploma so I had to go night school and try and get my GED. I finally got my GED in 2004 and then debated as whether or not I wanted to go back to college after the experience I had I was a little skeptical about it. My plans after I got my GED was to enroll at Santa Fe community college because they had the best zoology program however I didn’t make it in due to the requirements that where needed in Math. I was never good in math so I figured that maybe college was not for me at the time. In 2006 I started working for the University of Phoenix which was one of the first company’s I ever worked for that where known nationwide. In about 3 months of working for UOP they offered to pay for my tuition if I decided I wanted to go back to school it took me a...

...2014 I can honestly say that so far college has been the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I encourage everyone to at least give college a shot. Ever since I was little I was expected to go to college, and I even remember my aunts repeating over and over again that I would be, “the first Clancy girl to go to Harvard.” As you can see I did not make it to Harvard, but my family has always had these high standards that they set for me. Part of the reason why I did go to college was because my family expected me to go. I cannot think of one person in my family that did not go to college, so when it came to my senior year in high school, everyone was asking me where I would be going in the fall. I also had a lot of pressure coming from my high school. At the assembly on the first day of school in the seventh grade, the head master explained to us that this school was meant to prepare you for college. This is the reason why 100% of my graduating class went on to further their education in college. Not only did all of my class go college, but 20 of them attended Harvard this fall. You can say that there were major expectations at my school. I did not attend college only because of the pressures, but I have always had that drive to further my education. I’ve always wanted to work in law enforcement, and I feel like it would be the perfect job for me. I still haven’t decided if I want to become a lawyer, or be on the SWAT team for the Boston Police, but that is why I decided...

...The reason I interviewed my mother is because she never really explains what she did before meeting my father. Even though she is an extensive part of my life she rarely tells of her past and interviewing her proved to get a better understanding of what her life was like after high school. Even though my mother, Marie Liddiard, dreamed to be an architect when she was younger, she became clueless on what she wanted to do once she was out of high school. First, I asked where and when she went to college, she said at the age of 17 she went to Lewis and Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho and she continued going for 1 and a half years. On her first day she was able to select her classes, however, most were full and the class she wanted to go...

... What is College for? What is College for? There are many answers to this question. I feel college is for people that want to succeed in life. You can be in any wage bracket, depending on what you’re majoring in. For example, you can go to school to be a doctor or a registered nurse. We all know doctors make more than a RN, so a doctor is in a higher wage bracket than a RN. As a student, you have the choice to be whatever you want to be. You might be in a major you like and end up changing majors because you found a major you like better. The first school I enrolled in was Central Carolina Tech in 1995. My major was Machine Tool Technology. My job paid 80% of my tuition, as long as it dealt with the job. I applied for a job in the Tool Room, but they didn’t want to hire me. I looked at getting employment elsewhere, but needed at least 2 years experience. So, after receiving my Associates Degree in Machine Tool Technology, I enrolled a second time in an Industrial Maintenance program. After getting my Associates Degree in Industrial Maintenance, I applied for a Maintenance helper position which I received soon after. I held the position for a year and tried to get a regular Maintenance position, but they did not want to hire me. I then signed up for a Die Bench Tech position, which I held for a year. I then decided to enlist into the US Army as a Machinist to gain experience within the civilian world. After serving 5 years in the Army, I decided to go overseas to work...

...I would like to tell you a quick story. This is a story about a girl who went against everything our culture defines as normal today. Historically speaking, for the past few decades, for a girl, most people would assume that life would take the following path… graduate from high school, go to college, get a job, get married, then have kids. Fair to say? (Pause) This girl graduated from high school as planned. Then she went on to college as planned… then her path took a LITTLE detour. She decided that being with her boyfriend back home was more important than college. So, after the fall semester, she left college and got an apartment with her boyfriend. They both had to work a couple of jobs to pay the bills. After a little while, they realized that maybe this wasn’t so cool, in fact, it was pretty hard. So they both moved back to their parent’s homes. This girl decided that she really did need that college education after all, so she went back to school, but this time she stayed local and still lived at home. And here is where her life took a BIG detour. See, she found out she was pregnant. Once again, she finished the fall semester and left college. Not long after, at 19 years old, she had a baby girl. Her story continues with more ups and downs… she had to rely on the help of other people to raise her daughter so she could work. Lucky for her, she had those caring people in her life. This girl was able to get a good job with health insurance so she could take care of her...

...Success in Education In this paper, I will talk about personal responsibility, and the role it plays in a student's education. If a person wants to succeed in college, then they have to take charge of their own education. They have to make sure that they get the "most bang for their buck." They need to learn everything that they can learn, and they need to make sure they do not slack off. According to Hodges (2006) "Remember, once you enter college you are, for the most part, in control of the experience you will have” (para. 1). Personal Responsibility What is personal responsibility? The best definition of personal responsibility that you will find comes from this article entitled "The Sequence of Personal Responsibility" by Ron Haskins. According to Haskins (2009), "Personal responsibility is the willingness to both accept the importance of standards that society establishes for individual behavior and to make strenuous personal efforts to live by those standards. But personal responsibility also means that when individuals fail to meet expected standards, they do not look around for some factor outside themselves to blame…” (para. 1). Personal responsibility is when a person is accountable for what they want or what they have done in their life. For example, right now I want to complete my degree more than anything, so I have to do whatever it takes to make that happen. Personal Responsibility and College Success Let us just start off by saying...

...Why I decided to go back to school I would honestly have to say that my decision of going back to school has to be the most adult decision I have made. So many pros and cons were involved in this decision. Although going back to school can certainly be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, it is not a decision that I could make selfishly. A solid support structure is one of the keys to seceding in this journey. I needed to know that my fiance was willing and able to support me in the decision I made. I also needed my family’s support to know that the decision I made was the right one. A huge advantage of returning to school at an older age is that I will appreciate learning in a way that was not possible before. This life experience will give me a perspective of what life is really about. I fell like this time around I will enjoy learning and my grades will be reflective of this. I needed to complete what I set out to do when I was younger. That is why I decided to finish school and actually finish something I have started. My parents also had a big part in my decision. I know that they worked really hard for us to go to school. I know that they will be very proud to see any of us finish school and show for it. Another big denominator in my decision was how now a days you are only worth anything if you have a degree. My decision was made because I want to make something out of myself, and I know that I am capable of doing it. I don’t want to have a regular...

...2014 Why College Education Is Important To Me Growing up I did not see a college education in my future due to its price tag. As my parents brought home just enough money every week to get by, I decided during the 11th grade in high school that I would rather work and make money than stay in school. I left school, received my G.E.D. a year later, all while working a full time job at the neighborhood pizzeria. A few years had passed, I landed a better job in an office setting as a typist. After working there for a little over 5 years, I realized this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. Being a typist was something I was good at; however, I yearned for something bigger and better. I tried several times to find another job, but there seemed to be one obstacle in my way, these better jobs required more than a G.E.D. or High School Diploma, they required a college degree. After several turn downs, careful thought, and consideration, I decided it was time for me to give this whole college thing a try. By this time I am now 26 years old with a 2 year old son, how am I possibly going to go to school and have time to study while being a stay-at-home mother? That’s when I started researching what opportunities were out there for me besides the standard college education. This is where I discovered “Distance Learning” with Ashworth College. Here I am a little over a decade later going for my college education. During the last 11 years, I have learned that a college education...

...Community College Scholarship Essay Financial Needs I am a student at SPCC. I just decided to go back to school this semester to advance my career. I was told that I no longer qualify for federal grants, so I am looking for a way to pay for college. School is very important to me and I enjoy learning. I am a mother of 3, with a child on the way. My Fiancé works at Mt Mariah Baptist Church in Matthews NC and does not bring home much. I work at Time Warner Cable and also do not bring home enough to afford school without financial assistance. My classes for the Fall semester is about a thousand dollars and that does not include the four books that I have to buy, which will average out to about $150 a book. I decided to go back to school after taking a good look at my future at the current company that I work for. All the advancement opportunities require a bachelor degree or better. I plan on transferring to UNC and completing my bachelor there. It seems like the most logical way to go, instead of wasting all that money on all these new online schools that credits most likely won’t transfer. I have tried to go to online schools like Strayer University, ECPI, and Kaplan. Even though I was focused and determine, I eventually realized that these types of classroom settings was not for me and that the cost of these schools were too expansive. They swallowed up all my grant money and I still had to get loans to cover the remaining balance of school. That is why I decided to go...

...years old, I don’t believe that I have had to make too many crazy choices but when I think of significant choices that I have needed to make only one pops up into my mind. I think of my decision to begin college or not. This was difficult for me because I was ready to start my life in the “real world” as soon as I walked out of my high school doors on graduation day, so I began by getting a regular job. Little did I know that just a plain “job” was not going to be what I had envisioned. The reason why I think the decision to come to college is a big deal is because of all the other things that the decision affects. For example, starting college means that I need to focus a lot of my energy and attention to doing well in classes, where if I decided to just get another job, then I would have to focus on doing well with my work and my boss. Also starting college means that I need to take a loan out to help pay for my new education. I kept putting off the decision because of all the worries and fears I had about college work and the expenses that would come with my idea of a proper education. After working a few “dead end” jobs that could barely support the gas needed to drive to these “Jobs”, I made my decision. Obviously I decided on starting college, I decided on this course because I had been working straight out of high school for a few years and it wasn’t really working out for me. I was ready to get my life started, to have my own place with the things I want; I have always...

...Why Are You Here? After I graduated high school I always knew I wanted to pursue a higher education but I never knew where or for what. So I took some time off about an 8-½ year hiatus from academics and joined the Army. I traveled the world seen amazing things and met a lot of amazing people whom I now consider my extended family. When my contract was up with the Army I decided to go back to college. I didn’t know in what or what for but I knew I wanted to go. So I had some thinking to do as in where I wanted to attend. Ocean County College became the number one choice for three deciding factors: location, class size and flexibility. I am a native of Toms River and I am very familiar with the area so when I decided to go back to school location was a major deciding factor. First being from the area I am well aware of all traffic patterns within the surrounding area, which is a plus, and I don’t have to adjust to new traffic patterns in unfamiliar territory. Second parking at OCC’s main campus is not the best but it is not bad either. They have ample areas to park and there is not a shortage in parking spots which would usually be a problem if I was attending a University or State College in a heavy populated city for example Seton Hall or NYU just to name a few. Lastly I only live 10 minutes from campus a very short drive, which make it very convenient if I’m rushing around town and have a study group or class within a certain time while I am out trying to accomplish any...

...Why I Decided to Return Back To School 6/19/14 Kathy Davis Professor Nancy Segovia Returning back to school was a very natural decision for me. It seemed to be the next logical step in my personal and careers goals. My ultimate goal is to be healthy and happy and be a good role model for my family members. I am more mature with my decision to return back to school now. The initial thought I had about returning back to school was that of apprehension due to the fact that I struggled a great deal throughout junior and high schools and had a false belief for years that I would not be successful if I attempted to go to college. I let my twenties, thirties, and my forties pass me bye with this belief firmly in me in my thinking and there was no one or anything to convince me of anything else, because I allowed my fear of failure to rule me all these year. I wanted to do something that was really going to have a lasting impact to someone’s life. Immediately thought about my children, letting them know it’s never too late to get a degree from any college. Going back to school can be a tough decision but being positive and having confidence can lead to success. Now that I am stable in life than I was when I finished or even years ago when I was considering going to school again I am more mature with why I decided to return back to the decisions I made forward toward...
