Why I Returned to School.

...Page 1 Why I Returned to School Khadijah Powell English Composition 121 Karen Lawler August 22, 2011 Page 2 This paper will give my personal outlook on why I returned back to school. It will describe certain details on my decisions to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree. It will also give the audience a chance to view an up close and personal insight on some of the things I went through to maintain my status as a full time student, mother and wife. Finally, it will outline some of the strategies I will use to stay focus and continue my studies to graduate. Page 3 In high I always maintained good s grades. I loved to attend school and hear my name called at the beginning of the class, with the teacher stating that I had received the highest grade out of the entire class. I would try to sit usually on the front row to get most of the information I needed to pass. I really never constantly study. Most of the time I would study right before a test or exam and pass it with flying colors. Towards the end of my senior year that when things began to get harder for me. I started to hang out with friends that meant me no good, which caused my grades to slip. I also had to move out of the home with my mother to live with my aunt, which wasn’t the best stable environment for me. I finally, got back on track and got my grades to where they needed to be so I could graduate. I was engaged also, so I graduated on Tuesday and was married on that Saturday. After getting married, it...

Indian Horse Richard Wagamese Summary

...residential schooling. I strongly believe that I can trust Richard’s perception of residential schools because in a way, Richard was retelling his version of his second hand residential schooling experiences. Given my past knowledge of residential schools and after watching several interviews of residential school survivors, I know that the majority of the events in the book are true. Knowing how Native American's were treated in residential schools and the way that residential schools affected Richard’s life, I think that Richard’s version of residential schooling isn’t that far off from the truth. Richard’s parents and extended family attended...

Management Accounting

...I am Seungwoo Chung and I was born in South Korea in the year 1989. I am becoming a junior this year and I am currently double majoring in psychology and business administration. I originally wanted to major only in business administration. However, I started gaining interest in psychology since last semester and I wanted to learn about this area of studies. Therefore, I decided to do a double major in psychology as well. The reason behind why I decided to study business administration was because I believed it would allow me to become a big help for my father’s business. My father is working in the trading business and English is essential for doing this area of work. Furthermore, various information taught in business administration courses are also essential for handling trade businesses. Therefore, I believe that this major is a great assistance for this area of work. I was supposed to graduate in the year 2012 originally. However, after I finished my first year in 2009, I took a rest from school for three years in order to do my military service and also for an internship opportunity. Serving in the military is essential for all Korean men. Therefore, I wanted to go as soon as possible when I’m still young so I went right after I finished my freshman year. In the military, I performed administrative work and tank controlling work for two years. For my internship, I worked in the marketing division of the second largest home supply company in South Korea. The tasks which...

Interviewing My Father

...The reason I interviewed my mother is because she never really explains what she did before meeting my father. Even though she is an extensive part of my life she rarely tells of her past and interviewing her proved to get a better understanding of what her life was like after high school. Even though my mother, Marie Liddiard, dreamed to be an architect when she was younger, she became clueless on what she wanted to do once she was out of high school. First, I asked where and when she went to college, she said at the age of 17 she went to Lewis and Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho and she continued going for 1 and a half years. On her first day she was able to select her classes, however, most were full and the class she wanted to go...

...if faced with courage, need not be lived again’ Born on April 4th, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1935, the children were returned to the care of their mother in Chicago, Illinois after her and her brother Bailey Jr. were sent to Arkansas to live with their parental grandmother, Annie Henderson, and their uncle, Willie. Later in 1935, the children were returned to the care of their mother in Chicago, Illinois, but were sent back to Stamps after it was discovered that her mother’s boyfriend had sexually molested Maya. He was arrested and kept in a cell for 1 day, however after his release he was later found dead. While living with the Grandmother, Maya became an elected mute; she felt her words had such power that they caused the death of others (her mother’s boyfriend) and as result choose not to speak at all. While living with her Grandmother, she responded with the following words: “Sister, Momma don’t care what these people say, that you must be an idiot, a moron, ’cause you can’t talk. Momma don’t care. Momma know that when you and the good Lord get ready, you gon’ be a teacher.” As a teenager, Dr. Angelou’s love for the arts won her a scholarship to study dance and drama at San Francisco’s Labor School. At 14, she dropped out to become San Francisco’s first African-American female cable car conductor. She later finished high school, giving birth to her son, Guy, a few weeks after graduation. Maggy

...Who Will Help Maggy? MAGGY was painted by Harvey Dinnerstein in 1985. Coincidently, that was the same year I joined the Army. Initially the painting appeared to be just a simple and unassuming portrait. Except for the flowers, there was not much color and it was rather muted and mostly dark. There was no real background to speak of, just a single vanishing line that merely allowed the viewer to differentiate between the floor and the blank wall behind her. In short, it was merely a life-size portrait of a lone woman standing, while holding an oversized bag that had a small bunch of flowers peeking out. This was all I saw as I passed by the painting, until I looked at her face. It was her face that made me stop. I had not planned on stopping; after all I had already found the painting I wanted to write about, The Rail Splitter. That one was a subtle yet powerful portrait of a beloved President and it would be easy enough to write about. All I was doing now was simply ruling out all the other paintings. That was until I saw her face. It wasn’t a particularly pretty face, not to say she was homely by any means, but more so to say it was not any physical attribute or attractiveness that caught my eye. Her face had a hauntingly hollow expression that was all too familiar, and although strong and lean, it had such an incredible heaviness to it. It seemed even holding it up had become beyond her ability anymore. It just seemed to hang down and list to her left. In...

Uc Personal Statement

...Describe the world you come from—for example, your family, community or school—and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. My life began in a place few people have heard of –Ridgecrest, California—a small town next to a naval base in the Mojave Desert. I live in Bakersfield now, but Ridgecrest will forever be my home and it gave me the foundation of the person I am today. With my mother working on the naval base and my father working in the police force, I was constantly around a military and law enforcement environment. Growing up in a culture that serves others, it became a part of me and close to my heart. This became a bigger impact on me when my brother left for the military when I was only eight years old. Even though I grew up in that culture, my brother leaving became personal and affected me more than I ever thought it would. It is through this sense of community and service, and the events that would unfold, that I know my future involves counseling military personnel. Just months after my brother left, my father was transferred to Bakersfield and I had to leave my friends and family. I had gotten over those losses and adjusted well to the “big city.” The summer between my freshman and sophomore year in high school my mother and I went on vacation with friends to their cabin. When we returned, my father had gathered his belongings and was gone. He said nothing of this to anyone and allowed us to come home and find out on our own. It was...

Wanderer Research Paper

...Wanderer I have heard the phrase “what a small world” too many times to count, but at the age of nine I figured out how untrue that statement was. The summer after third grade, I traveled with my family to Germany for the first time. I was surrounded by unfamiliarity; unfamiliar people, places, food, and languages. Growing up in a small town, the concept of how big the world is and how small you are is very hard to grasp. Although I realized that German was an entirely different language than English, it was so strange to see the signs, TV shows, and text messages were all in German. I felt like I had gone back to before I learned how to read because very few of the words made any sense to me. Although I enjoyed the trip, it was not until I returned last winter that I had discovered my love of traveling. The term wanderer essentially means traveler and it defines me because of my love of the traveling, traveling between groups of friends, and...
