...restoration. When devastation happens within a family and hopelessness is among those that remain, whom do you call? A hospital Chaplain is available for families in their time of need and suffering. “Many hospitals stress that although their chaplains belong to specific religious groups, the spiritual services provided are interfaith, meaning that people of all religious faiths will be respected, and that additional religious officiants can be provided upon request.” (Smith, 2012) The roll of a hospital Chaplain is to offer families or individuals spiritual support at any time. This also includes staff members. In specific situations when death is the unfortunate result of a patient, The Chaplain may be requested to be at the bedside for the remaining family members. They offer support and spiritual guidance and are available to questions and concerns about the patient’s death. They may refer the family to outside services for funeral planning as well. Nurses and physicians may also call upon the Chaplain for their patients that have expressed depression and despair. The patients always have the option to refuse the services of a Chaplain at any time as well. The author recalls running into the hospital Chaplain from time to time in the halls of the hospital. He was welcoming and available to answer question or concerns for those that approached him. The Chaplain may hold a spiritual service at the hospital, typically on Sunday mornings, for all who choose to attend. At the hospital...

...Combat Medics whom I will call SGT Medic, had committed suicide. The Soldiers’ cry for help and those who heard but did not listen to the warning signs of suicide. A Combat Medics Cry for Help Noncommissioned Officers (NCOs) are the back bone of the United States (U.S.) military. We are responsible for the training and leadership instilled in our Soldiers. This NCO had developed into an effective Combat Medic where his duty was to provide emergency medical treatment until further assisted. He lived his life helping others on and off the battlefield. This paper will provide an overview of an NCO Combat Medic battling his own internal daemons from the Iraq war that took away all that training instilled and the ability to adapt. In addition, this paper will give an example on how no matter the amount of training received, the amount of videos seen, numerous times hearing a Chaplain brief on Suicide Prevention there will come a time the warning signs are evident, and you will not react. The Call August 30th, 2015 approximately 19: 30 my husband and I were watching television, and in between commercials reading my emails. My cellphone rang and I recognized the number, one of my NCOs . As I greeted him, his first words to me were “Command Sergeant Major (CSM), I think SGT Medic killed himself”, I responded “how, when did this happen”? The Soldier had been on his Facebook page and had seen many messages of rest in peace, thinking of you, we will miss you. I asked the Soldier...

...Meursault's interaction with authority, his attitude towards Marie, and his attitude towards his own death as a means of summarizing the major message of the book. Meursault is uncaring for his actions towards the authority strengthening the theme. Going through the case, Meursault did not seek the Chaplain’s empathy to convince them he was innocent, rather he did the opposite. The chaplain asked if Meursault believed in God because his belief was that, “... all men believed in God… and if he were ever to doubt it, his life would be meaningless. ‘Do want my life to meaningless?’ he shouted… It didn't have anything to do with me, and I told him so” (69). His response reveals that no one should be able to control another person’s life and beliefs; even if it was the authorities or a greater power. If he chose to change his belief and...

...as she wanders through the harsh prison, to deliver some sad news to a killer-inmate. The story is playing out in what seems like a classic county prison. Evie, the catholic chaplain, is assigned to tell the inmate, Victor Zamora, that his Nan dead. As she enters his cell, she immediately notices, that Victor is not a regular long-term prisoner. Even though he has been imprisoned for five years, for killing a fellow student with a butterfly knife, he does not have any long-term staleness, as you would expect people like him to have. His skin is still olive and his eyes are blue, and they still have spark. And when she brings him the news, he does not react, as you would expect. He does not start to cry or become upset, which would be the typical reaction. And at the same time, she wonders, how something with as peaceful a name as a butterfly knife can be used to perform such a horrible act. The plot of this story proceeds chronologically, and we are thrown directly into the story without any form of introduction. There are no flashbacks, no flashforwards or foreboding. It is all happening as it would in real time, without any jumps in time. It is a third person, limited omniscient narrator, which is following Evie’s point of view. It is a third person narrator, because terms such as “I say” or “I feel” are not used in the story. We can tell, that the narrative function is following Evie, because it describes how she is feeling and thinking: “As soon as she says these words...

...society known to the characters of The Outsider by Albert Camus, gender ideologies are explored. In the novella, men are represented as the dominant, powerful gender while women are represented as weak and undermined. It is through the character of Meursault’s girlfriend Marie, that the idea of gender identity is revealed. When Meursault is arrested for the murder of the Arab man, Marie is called to court as a witness to the crime, as well as been questioned for her own character. At the court case, instead of Marie being asked for her recollection of the events that took place on the night of the murder, she is interrogated about her relationship with Meursault, in particular her sexuality. ‘He therefore asked Marie to describe the day on which I had intercourse with her’ (page 90) The judge and the jury manipulate the information given from Marie creating the illusion that she is rather promiscuous and uses her sexuality to get...

...tells” Sorry for the Loss. It means that the narrator doesn’t have access to the thoughts of the other persons in the novel. Therefore, in this case, the narrator has a limited point of view. The narrator does only have access to the thoughts of Evie, who is a Catholic chaplain. Therefore, we don’t have access to the thought of Victor or the officer. If we had access Victors thought or the officers. We would have a bigger picture of the situation and their reaction to various subjects. The restricted point of view gives us as reader better understanding of Evie. We learn how Evie is as a person for an example. She says “Although she has been in the post for over a year she still finds the environment of a prison abrasive and intimidating” (P.1, L 18-19) Evie is the main character of the novel, she is characterized by the narrator as an inexperienced Chaplain since it’s her first time she is going to deliver a death notice without an assistant. “This will be the first death notice she has delivered on her own and she wants to get it right” (P.1, L 1-2) The fact that, it’s her first time coming with a death notice without any assistant to Victor, who has lost a member of his family. It frustrated her, she wants to finish it as quickly as possible. When she tells Victor...

He asked the psychiatrist about his medication, saying that he doesn’t like the way it makes him feel and that he doesn’t like what they are doing to him. He quickly got tearful and said that he really misses his family, he just wants to leave and start living life while he is young enough to do so. Maybe have a family of his own one day and that time is running out. The psychiatrist talked to him about the importance of medication and Mark replied that chewing gum is more helpful than the meds. He said he does not need antipsychotics and that he is not a schizophrenic and is just here because he kept getting into...

...Leadership Stress Management Through Effective Leadership Before taking this class, I thought that stress was the sole topic and just that. To my surprise, stress management is actually comprised of a variety of elements. I compare it to a pie (the “stress”) cut into triangular shaped pieces (e.g. internal management, death of an officer, dangerous situations, misconduct, sleep, testifying in court, effects on the family) forming a whole circle. My initial concern was the impact of how administrators handled (or mishandled) the management level of their employees. That was important to me because it determined how effectively a department is run which greatly influences the overall morale of its employees, thus molding the primary sources of stressors (Zhao, He, & Lovrich, 2002). I believe that most police departments do desire to supervise their employees as effectively as possible. Over the years, administrators have presented evolving opinions of what constitutes effective supervision. One way to look into the subject of management is to view it from the subordinate’s perspective. For example, what do police officers expect from their sergeant? And sergeant from a lieutenant? Supervisors become effective managers when they teach, conduct and delegate cases fit for each police officer. For example, in order for me to compose the best team possible for a serial rapist case, I would have to choose those properly trained and with the most experience in the field...

...who is prison chaplain. In the text she is about to tell an inmate that a relative of his died. This is the first time she is going to do this. The text is about the expectations she has towards telling him the grim news and how people can surprise you. She had her expectations and maybe even prejudices going into that cell. By analyzing symbols and reactions in the novel, this essay will look deeper on the reaction of the inmate Victor. This essay will also look at Evie’s workplace and how she feels about her work. Last, it will look at some of the symbols in the text and how they are used to make us understand certain points in the text. Victor reacts differently than Evie expected because he understand his situation. Victor seems to care very little about his grandmother’s death. At least compared to what you would expect but there is one thing you need to understand. Victor is in for murder and has done 5 years. He will be doing a lot more years and there is no point in becoming soft now. He knows the rules in the prison. “Is there anything you’d like me to do? I can find out the time of the funeral if you like?” “I won’t be able to go though will I, Miss?” (p. 4 l. 140-141). He would like to go if he could but he knows that he cannot so he does not want to seem like he cares. Prison is tough and when you are behind bars for as long as a man with a murder sentence is, your hard surface is very important. He is not trying to be intimidating or frightening but I he is trying...

...the final time.” (Atwater, 1964) “How do you parent without a net, without a future, knowing that you will lose your child, bit by torturous bit?” (Rapp, 2011) Will it be a boy or a girl? What color will the eyes, the hair be? Whose smile will the baby have? These are just a few of the many questions that begin when parents find out they have conceived a child, and most of the time the questions only grow as the pregnancy progresses too; what will they want to be when they grow up? Who will they look like? Will they be strong, graceful, independent, or determined? Should we look at preschools and colleges now? It may not seem to occur very often that parents will say to themselves; we never thought about how we might parent a child without a future. Now instead of questions that may focus on the future, the focus is questions for the present and seeking answers; how much time will I have with my child? How do I handle the problems and pain? Why is my child being punished before they are even born? What did I do wrong? Why won’t anyone tell me how to fix this? In some situations, such as the case study for this paper, these questions occur all too often and may have only heartbreaking...

...Vincent Coughlin PATHE 200 Final Project Spring/15 RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY IN MEDICINE THESIS STATEMENT: Patients with multiple religious beliefs are treated everyday by emergency care workers which creates a void in respect towards the patient and their beliefs if the proper training and knowledge are lacking. INTRODUCTION When the subject of religion and spirituality come up in conversation in the governmental arena most people will argue that they are both on separate planes and should remain that way. But when people were asked if there is a place for religion in the medical field, the majority of those asked will say that they would prefer their physicians inquire about their individual faith and beliefs. In fact, polls indicate that the U.S. Population is highly religious; that most people believe in Heaven and hell. The same people also believe in the healing power of prayer and the capacity of faith to aid in the recovery from disease (N.E.J.O.M. 342). Religion and Spirituality have become an intricate part of patient care in the last 20 plus years. Religion is understood as a set of beliefs, rituals and practices usually embodied within an institution or an organization. Religion is more generalized and all-inclusive. Spirituality is more defined and specific to each individuals Religion. Spirituality is thought of as a search for what is sacred in life, one’s deepest values, along with a relationship with God...
