...a warm sunny day and I was in the backyard playing on my homemade wooden swing-set. My stepfather was a general contractor, so he built me and my younger sister a new swing-set. The slide was made out of copper and it had wood as the rails. As I was sliding down it my leg got to close to the side of the rail and I got a huge splinter in the side of my leg. I was crying very loudly because it hurt so bad, my mom heard me so she ran out there to see what had happened. I had to go to the emergency room to get the splinter removed so it wouldn’t get infected. I knew right then at that very moment that I wanted to be a nurse. Here are a couple things that I found to be interesting about nursing. Did you know that Jan 27th is school nurse day? Or did you know that in 1783 a black slave named James Derham worked as a nurse in New Orleans, eventually earning enough money to buy his freedom and move to Philadelphia, where he studied medicine and became a doctor? And I also bet that you didn’t know that the largest demand for Licensed Practical Nurses through 2110 will be in nursing homes? Or that the 4th week of May is National Nurses week, which is coming up pretty soon. And May 8th is national Student Nurses’ day (Start a nurse staffing agency). Well I didn’t know any of that either until I started my paper on my nursing career. In December 2010 I finished my schooling for a Licensed Practical Nurse at the JCTC Campus in the accelerated program. I chose to start out at...

...References My name is Sadie Edwards and I have over 10 years of nursing experience Definition of Delegation Delegation: Transferring to a competent individual the authority to perform a selected nursing task in a selected situation. The nurse retains accountability for the delegation. Concepts and Decision-Making Process National Council Position Paper, 1995 Most nurses would rather do the tasks themselves, but they can not perform all of them safely. According to Hansten & Jackson, “it is our responsibility to the patients we care for to ensure that they receive the best that we can offer by delegating wisely”. Delegation Process * Define the task * Select the individual or team * Assess ability and training needs * Explain the reasons * State required results * Consider resources required * Agree to deadline * Support and communicate * Feedback and results Alan Chapman, Delegation 1995-2009 The steps to successful delegation are: 1. To define the task, ask yourself if the task is right to be delegated. Does it meet the criteria for delegating? 2. Select the individual or team, why are you delegating to this person or team? What are the both of you getting out of it. 3. Assess ability and training needs, is this other person or team of people able to do the task. Do they understand what needs to be done. If not, you can not delegate. 4. Explain the reasons, explain why the job or responsibility is...

...Associate degree level versus the baccalaureate degree level of nursing According to the Bureau of labor statistics ,the occupation of Registered Nurses is the largest in the healthcare sector, and the job opportunities are expected to increase faster through 2018. A Bachelors of Science in Nursing [BSN] and Associate degree in Nursing [ADN] both make candidates eligible for becoming RNs. Associate degree in nursing programs of study are two to three year programs of study offered by technical, community and junior colleges . BSN programs on the other hand are four year courses offered by colleges and universities . In some Universities students are given the option of taking their State Board exam to receive their ADN while continuing their BSN, this allows them to work while they complete their education. For both programs students are trained in class and outside in clinical settings for hands on experience. While the ADN program focuses on giving students the entry-level skills they need to take care of patients, the BSN is much broader incorporating education ,management and leadership skills. The BSN program also gives students the communication skills they need and empowers them in decision making. Nursing is becoming more comprehensive, with the improved technology and availability of information to the general population , nurses have to continually educate themselves to keep abreast. BSN programs prepare candidates for much broader aspect of healthcare; these...

...WHY DID I CHOOSE NURSING When I was a little girl I always dreamed of being a nurse. I would watch my mother get ready for work every night. First she would put on her scrubs, then the stethoscope, and then her id for the hospital. She would come home and speak about all of her experiences and adventures. I was inspired. I started helping my mother take care of my grandmother and from then on I knew this was my calling. My mother always said: “Alexandra, you have a nurturing spirit, and you were born to be a nurse” (Danielle Jerome). I went to Camden county college as pre-nursing major and I got to work. College wasn’t as easy as I thought and I began to become discouraged. I switched my major to mathematics education and shortly realized that nursing was the only thing I can dream about. Then I landed in Prism Career Institute for LPN license and I feel right at home. School is not easy for me but I am prepared to buckle down. I’d had a plethora of jobs in my lifetime. My first job when I was 15 was an administrative assistant in a senior day care. I absolutely loved that job. I sat at a desk, greeted guests, answered phone calls, wrote emails, and assisted the manager with anything he needed done. I learned at a very young age how to be professional and mature. After that I went to the restaurant business. I worked at Friday’s, Cracker Barrel, and Bahama Breeze just to name a few. Working in the restaurant business taught me self control, responsibility, and great customer...

...It wasn’t until senior year of high school have I decided that I know what I wanted to do with my career. I had just gotten my CNA certification during the summer leading up to my senior year of high school, I thought that maybe starting off as a CNA might give me a better insight on what I wanted to pursue. I’ve always been fascinated working within the medical field, as cliché as it may sounds but my early childhood had consisted of helping out my grandparents in Thailand and eventually when I moved within the states at the age of 6 I ended up taking care of my grandma. I always made sure that she had something to eat, fixed her sandwiches and fetched her things when she calls for it, I’ve never thought that with helping my grandma would prepare me in a way for my future....

...WHY I WANT TO PURSUE A CARRER AS A NURSE. I want to become a nurse because I like being able to help those who are in need and try to improve what is probably been a bad day for them. I was born and raised in Cameroon, where poverty is very evident. Throughout my life, I have seen all different kings of people in poverty, may it be infants, children, elderly people and even disabled people. Everyday I would see people on the streets begging others for money just so they could treat their ailing relatives. Whenever I saw them, I felt so weak. I wanted to help them, yet I did not know how since I was just a child. It wasn’t until I moved here in the United States that I realized health care is truly the right path for me. Moving here made me realized how other countries like Cameroon are in great need of health services. It made me more aware of the situation and now that I am older, I know that I could do my part in those in needs in all over the world and Africa especially. Seeing the poverty and lack of good health care gave me more than the desire to become a nurse, it gave me the passion and determination to achieve that carreer. I believe that passion and determination are important elements in becoming a nurse which I posses all skills Once I stared researching a career in nursing I realized that there were a lot more types of nurses than I had originally thought. This confused me because there was a nurse for almost everything! Then I finally decided...

...at least almost every woman has at one time or another of her life, charge of personal health of somebody, whether a child or invalid in other words every woman is a nurse” (Nightingale 1859, p.8). The American Association Of Colleges of nursing is the national voices for baccalaureate and graduate nursing education, established quality standard for nursing education, nursing could not developing in a profession until it could generate scientifically base knowledge. ( steward, 1943) I have been a nurse for twelve years working as a telemetry nurse for four years and as an emergency room nurse for eight years. I used my knowledge to worked efficiently with each patient I encountered throughout each day, before I started Grand Canyon University approximately two weeks ago I would have argued “there is no difference in competency between a nurse that holds an associate degree and a nurse with a baccalaureate degree my theory was we both take the same NCLEX and we are both registered nurses now that I have done researches, there are differences : leadership, health promotion, case management, and critical thinking even though we both have the same licensure. A nurse with a baccalaureate degree have a better understanding of different cultures and...

...governor and a state agency (i.e., such as the Department of Health, in Washington state), 3) a state agency, or 4) another state official or organization. Just who oversees a regulatory agency is defined in that agency’s bylaws. These bylaws also summarize the duties and powers of that particular agency. In the case of a BON, these consist of: 1) enforcing the state’s Nurse Practice Act and nursing licensure; 2) accrediting or approving nursing education programs in schools and universities; and 3) developing practice standard, policies, administrative rules and regulations for the practice of nursing within the state (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2014). Essentially, a regulatory agency such as a board of nursing lays out how I should conduct my nursing practice, as dictated by the Nurse Practice Act. This act grants me permission to practice nursing after passing a licensure exam, and awards me the appropriate nursing title to use within...

...done and those studies have proven that immediately after graduation the skills of both groups are equal. Where the difference begins is approximately one year after graduation, nurses prepared at the Baccalaureate level “…show greater critical thinking skills, better problem solving, and the development of clinical judgment; three skills of increasing importance for the increase in acuity of patients in hospitals and other health care settings”. (West Coast University N.D) Based generally and only education I could see how this might be true, but I look at my own experiences and realize that I am not unique and this is not always the case. In my medical career, I was ambulance attendant, an Emergency Medical Technician, an Army Combat Medic, a Patient Care Specialist (the Army’s version of an LPN), then a Paramedic. Varied but similar jobs all with their own experiences and all this before I started the nursing program. So a year after my graduation, I feel that I had better critical thinking skills, problem solving and development of clinical judgment than a new grad with no experience. In several studies, a 10% increase of nurses with BSN degrees in hospitals resulted in an increase of 2.12 to 7.47 better outcomes based on the number and type of patients sampled. (American...

...skills appropriate to their social position” (Melrose, Miller, Gordon, & Janzen, 2012, pg. 2), my experience was diametrically different. I encountered more dissension amongst the other nurses and very few of them had any interest in acclimating new recruits. The orientation process was more like a sink or swim environment and the only real transference of knowledge came when I confronted the more experienced nurses and bombarded them with questions regarding the specifics of the cultural processes and procedures. Conceptually, socialization into nursing should have been an opportunity for me to develop an identity as a nursing professional, however, that really didn’t take place until I after my orientation and I migrated to a different shift, with a new group of professional nurses who saw that I needed their assistance. At this point in my nursing journey, the process of socialization began to be more textbook like. New nurses were heavily oriented to the environment and were encouraged to ask questions. We were assigned nursing mentors upon whom we called when we needed a more intimate understanding on some particular issue. While the beginning of my nursing journey started off leaving me questioning whether I’d made the right decision, my overall experience had a very positive impact on how I see myself as a nursing professional. I now understand the importance of not only gathering data, as is suggested...

...Priorities and Delegation Paper Delegation and assignment of nursing activities are important parts of the implementation component of practice for the registered nurse and licensed practical nurse. The licensed nurse may delegate and assign nursing care activities to other licensed nurses or unlicensed assistive personnel. This is based on their own licensed level, assessment of the client’s status, clinical competence of licensed and unlicensed personnel, and factors in each practice setting. Before assigning and delegating nursing activities to staff, the nurse needs information about the staff so that they can confidently assign them to the patients. One must know the legal roles in RNs and LPNs before delegation can occur. Delegation by RNs and LPNs must be within their scope or practice. Duties and responsibilities vary in different states. According to the Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act in the state of Massachusetts, nurses may assign and delegate the UAP any activities that do not require nursing assessment and judgment during implementation. In addition, they can allow the UAP to collect, report, and document simple data. Furthermore, UAP may be involved in activities that assist the patient in meeting basic human needs such as nutrition, hydration, mobility, comfort, elimination, socialization, rest and hygiene. In the state of Massachusetts, there are four nursing activities that must not be delegated to the patients. These activities include...
