...“Why I write/Difficult reading" Writing. One word, unlimited stories, tales, memories and also; stress. I struggle with both a mental and medical disability. This makes it so much more difficult to do everyday activities let alone something that takes long-term commitment and focus. I struggle very much when it comes to writing, reading and pretty much anything that has to do with concentration. When doing an assignment for class, for example; homework, my severe anxiety kicks in (although I suffer from it 24-7 it hit’s the ceiling when stress is involved.). I have to not only understand the work that has to be done I then have to read, re-read, look up, ask questions, attempt to understand, and re-read as I go to try to answer any questions I later have. I never knew about this column setup before and truthfully I am shocked to find that it does actually help. When reading I used to highlight, underline, keep notes or truthfully skip over words or sentences I couldn't comprehend or just couldn't pronounce. I was very lazy in my younger school years and pretended like certain words, definitions, or sentences were not important and could be skipped or omitted from the readings I was working on. I later found out that I was wrong and it was my downfall in certain assignments. I also struggle from a learning disability that I just recently found out about which also makes it frustrating when it takes hours to do an assignment that takes others minutes to...

...MEDIUM Why do I write? First, I write because I have feelings that are sometimes well said when written. You see, I used to be that someone who is really not outspoken. I keep almost all my thoughts to myself that sometimes, when I get the chance to say it, It gets tangled up making it harder to express. I used to consider writing as my way of letting it all out. As if writing is my refuge. When I was in high school, every time I feel down, I write my emotions to my notebooks. Sometimes when I feel intensely sad, I grab any notebook near me and write on it. I even cry while I write. Nowadays, I no longer feel the same way and as I read through my “diaries”, I never would’ve realized how emotional I was during those days. I also use writing as a way to record my life because I love travelling down memory lane. I love taking time reading through my “diaries” and see myself during that exact time. Like when mom and I had a fight, I wrote with such strength that my pen ran through the paper like a knife. There are also times when I feel too happy that I write with the most beautiful hand writing I could ever produce. Such times tell me that I could be extreme. I would like to call those days as my transition period. The time when I hit rough waters just to get to whom I am now. From the past me who was too introverted to the present me who am a little less introverted and a little more outspoken. Writing really makes a big contribution to my growth. But, I seldom write nowadays...

...12 February 2014 “Why I Write” Joan Didion Basically, the story of this article, “Why I Write”, is about how she thinks. She explained about her problem about thinking in abstract and then described her thinking process. My favorite quotation in this text is “When I was in Berkeley, I tried to buy temporary visa into the world of ideas, to forge for myself a mind that could deal with the abstract.” I chose this quotation because it made me laugh. I surprised about the broadness connotation of language. I have not thought about using language like that way ‘visa into the world of ideas.’ Now, I can clearly understand the beauty of language and why people study the language. To be honest, I could not understand why people choose their major as English or other languages. I thought majoring language does not have any attraction; however, I finally tasted a charm of language which left such a great aftertaste. I want to ask my peers about how humble she is. In the article, Joan said that she got a bachelor’s degree in English from UC Berkeley which is one of the greatest universities in the States. However, she mentioned that she is never related with intellectuals. Don’t you think she is humble? How can she possibly say that? The most interest thing in this article is her process of thinking in abstract. Actually, I also have same problem as Joan’s. I always failed when I try to think something in abstract. I could not get out from the limitation of tangibility. Therefore...

...I choose a passage in Why I write by Joan didion on page 3 the middle paragraph. The paragraph has a deeper meaning than it looks and can inspire people to do what they truly want to do. Didion was a true believer in what she has become, a writer. Didion was a college student who was going to major in English , but thought she couldn’t do college because of the way she thinks. Her way of thinking wasn’t bad at all, she found what she truly wanted to be by her way of thinking. She didn’t recognize her true passion tell she wanted to write what she see in her head. In why I write didion said, “By which I mean not a “good” writer or a “ bad” writer but simply a writer, a person whose most absorbed and passionate hours are spent arranging words...

...stairs to this loud, crowded, messy house, where tonight’s ‘phat’ party is being held. I take in the horrible smell of burning tobacco floating through the air being produced by young adolescents who have their 12oz. in one hand, and their Marlboro burning in the other. Black lungs, lung cancer, and that terrible smokers cough is all I can think of as I walk past these kids to one of my high school buddies who enjoys getting his pack-a-day of nicotine, tar filled cancer sticks. Is their really such thing as a light cigarette? I hold these thoughts to myself, and continue to chitchat with my buddy for the five minutes or so it takes him to finish his ‘cig’ about random, immature, and funny topics that he will probably forget about in the next 30 minutes. I carry on with my night by taking a few short steps into the crowded party house. Waka Flocka Flames “No Hands” is blaring through the air, people dancing, laughing, talking, and flirting while drinking their 12oz. cans. Standing to my left is at first glance a very attractive young woman, at second glance is a college student whose face is peeling due to the excessive amount of makeup covering her entire face. She is already starting to talk like she is a forty year smoker. I just saw her outside with a full 12oz. that she was rapidly finishing in order to get herself to as many of us young people would put it, “On Her Level”. I keep walking and feel my feet sticking to the floor with every step from the spilled 12oz...

...The Dave Matthews Band When I think of The Dave Matthews Band, I also think of their jazzy pop rock music that has helped them become a musical sensation. The band consists of jazz and classical musicians and of course, Dave Matthews. Their music and songs are very unique and have not been heard before the band came about. They have touched millions of people’s hearts, especially mine. The fact that they sing about real situations and real issues that are going on the world today is what makes them my favorite band. Whether I am happy, sad, or mad, The Dave Matthews Band’s album “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King” always lifts my spirits and puts me in a better mood; their songs are inspirational. One of the songs that touch me the most is called “Funny the Way It Is”. This song is about the good and bad things going on in the world. The point being made is that even though many wonderful things are happening, bad things are occurring at the exact same time. “Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ On a soldier's last breath, his baby's being born/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ Somebody's broken heart become your favorite song/ Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out” Not only does it discuss the fine times and poor times in life, but also how people take the privileges they have for granted. While kids...

My father worked two jobs and eighteen hour days to provide for us and to send money to family back home. My mother, with only a high school education, found it difficult to learn the language and had to work menial jobs. ...Maya Angelou is not only an author; she is a poet, playwright, screen producer, and many more. Growing up, Maya’s life was filled with ups and downs. In spite of her trials and tribulations, Maya Angelou has found a way to accomplish many goals. Throughout her career, she has not only written books, but she as acted in and directed several plays, lived in Ghana for four years, raised a child by herself, and worked as hard as he could to give her and child the best life. Maya Angelou, Marguerite Johnson, was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri (Gale Group 4). She initially lived in St. Louis with her mother, Vivian, who was a nurse, and a maid, and her father Barly, a doorkeeper and navel dietician (Gale Group 4). As she was growing up, Maya’s mother never cared for her as a mother should. Often, her mother would leave her and her brother and would not return for days at a time. This, of course gave Maya no other choice but to take full responsibility for the household and her brother. When she was thirteen, Angelou’s mother decided to leave St. Louis without telling her. It was on that day that she went to live with her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. Maya’s grandmother was a very strict lady and made sure that Maya and her brother would grow up to be the best people they could be. Maya’s grandmother made a great impact on her and her brother’s lives. Because of her grandmother, Maya can often be quoted as saying “ If you don’t appreciate the things you have, other...

...Angelou, the author of her autobiography, “I know why the caged bird sings”. The author uses style, a tone of admiration, and a mood of aspiration to get the message across. This running style by Maya Angelou shows the good and evil side of people. An effective autobiography does a lot more than tell a story, it creates detailed account of life. Through figures of speech, Maya exposes Bertha Flowers, her teacher who had a huge part in molding Maya as she ran her way into young adulthood. Maya Angelou writes “she was our sides answer to the richest white woman in town” (p.42). Mrs. Flowers was Maya’s role model growing up as a black woman in racist times. She had witnessed the discrimination against black people living in Stamps, Arkansas. Mrs. Flowers represented a need for change. Maya described Mrs. Flowers as a woman worthy of praise. Without the effective writing style that Maya encompasses, the reader would be exhausted and fatigued to all the life lessons Mrs. Flowers throws to her. Tone is the writer’s attitude for a subject. The tone is used to show Maya’s admiration for Mrs. Flowers. Maya writes “For nearly a year, I sopped around the house, the store, the school and the church, like an old biscuit, dirty and inedible” (p.41). Maya is describing herself as an “old biscuit, dirty and inedible” referring about her previous rape. Also when Maya says “I sopped for a year” she is referencing all the time she was depressed. Maya also writes “Browned photos leered or threatened...

...his public activities. Both Maya Angelou and Collective Soul share the hardships and oppression, which had been given to life and other people. Poem Maya Angelou Still I Rise and song Collective Soul December showing the effects of the individual through positive and negative expression. Poetry Maya Angelou and Collective Soul are similar in some respects, when broken down correctly. Collective Soul wrote "Why drink the water from my hand contagious as you think I am?"; reflects the same idea that the actions of Maya Angelou when she said, "Are you annoyed by my boldness Why did you suffer from sadness"; These two parts of his writings to make a similar question. Why do I push one world I that you can not wait for someone else? "Do not cry, do not just think aloud Turn your head now baby just spit me not to worry, not to speak of doubt Turn your head now baby just spit on me";. This is a complicated way of saying why I respect what you missed, because you can not stand the way I am. Just go with me, I try another law that if I shit. What good do it for you, let me down? I think that the question of the collective soul asks the person or group of persons that will be installed to the slaughter. Maya Angelou asks a similar question when he wrote: "My pride is hurt;?" Do not take an awful hard, because I laugh, I got diamonds at the meeting of my thighs;. This question is your opponent who chooses to treat it differently, like what the team asked the...
