Many believe that Alabama is dull. That, Las Vegas or New York, are so much more exciting with their beaches, their arcades, and their food. However, there are just as many landmarks, fun activities, and culture in quiet Alabama. Alabama has many different iconic landmarks. One of its famous landmarks that I would love to visit is the USS Alabama. It has so many different interesting artifacts and deep history. There are old turrets, a sick bay, and some of the decks that are open for touring. You get to watch a film of the crew members and what they did and just the how such a beautiful ship was made. Another famous military site is Fort Morgan. This large pentagonal fort is famous for playing an important role in the Battle of Mobile Bay. It was also used in several other wars like the Spanish American War, World War I, and World War II. This also has a deep history and would be interesting to look at military development at that age. All of this is overshadowed by the famous Edmund Pettus Bridge. There, Martin …show more content…
One of Alabama’s famous attractions are the golf courses. They boast wonderful scenery, world-wide attention, and a place for professional golfers to challenge themselves. Another entertaining activity would be watching the Talladega Superspeedway. This is the fastest and most competitive race track for racing cars of any type. I would like to see the amazing races that take place, especially the drag races in which they have “funny cars”, which are almost like the car’s hood tilted upward while the motor and other things on the inside are shown. Another great attraction that I would like to see is an oddity. One of the last ones of its kind, this African ghost town was where the last slaves from Africa were brought to, and buried when they died. They had kept their culture for a long time though and there are many things you can learn while enjoying the spooky, rundown

...and justify your selection. A specialty that’s fits the Alabama geographic area is women’s health. The top five areas of women’s health that are affecting the lives of women on a daily basis are: heart disease, breast cancer, stroke, autoimmune diseases, and osteoporosis. Based on research I will attempt to prove why women’s health was chosen as a specialty by providing statistical facts and benefits. Worldwide, 8.6 million women die from heart disease each year, accounting for a third of all deaths in women. Heart disease is the number one killer in the state of Alabama. Research shows that in the year 2007 a total of 11,926 people died of heart disease and of that number 6, 018 were females. On an average, nearly twenty-one females die from heart disease in Alabama each day. Alabama is one of five states to have the highest death rate from heart disease. Alabama has the second highest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country ("Alabama state fact,”). Statistics for the Alabama area show that per 100,000 women a rate of 116.8 was white and a rate of 116.2 was black that reported breast cancer incidents. Based on 100,000 women rates of 24.1 experienced deaths by breast cancer, rates show that 21.5 of women that died by breast cancer were white and 33.1 of those women were black ("Breast cancer rates," 2010). The stroke death rate is 1.3 times the national average. Stroke is the number 3 killer in Alabama, a total of 2,747 people died of stroke in the year 2007...

Racism in the South

...story. The historical decisions Jim Crow Laws, Pace vs. Alabama, and Plessy vs. Ferguson impacted Richard Wright throughout his life in the book. First of all, The Jim Crow Laws had a tremendous impact on Richard Wright in the book. By making blacks obey these laws in the South, they were treated as less than by white people. For example, Richard could not speak his mind because he was expected to act a certain perfect way around white people. Richard was almost always let go from a job because he did not behave a certain way. One time a white man told him “Why don't you laugh and smile like the other niggers? I don't like your looks nigger, now get!” (Wright 182). To add on, as Richard grew a little older he had received death threats from white men when he would forget to comply to the Jim Crow Laws in the moment of a conversation. Richard is considered lucky when these white men let him go easy after hitting him with a empty glass whiskey bottle. One tells him “Nigger, you sure ought to be glad it was us you talked to that way. You're a lucky bastard, cause if you'd said that to some other white man, you might've been a dead nigger now” (Wright 181). These horrific events due to the Jim Crow laws in the south had most likely traumatized Richard and every other black person during those times. Altogether, black people would have had an easier life if it were not for the Jim Crow Laws. To add on, the Pace Vs. Alabama case impacted Richard wright tremendously in the book....

A Letter from a Birmingham Jail

...influential impact of any civil rights leader in history. King Jr. began his civil rights activities in 1955 when he protested in Montgomery, Alabama against their horribly segregated public bus system. The protest was started after an African American lady on a bus by the name of Rosa Parks was arrested after she decided not to give up her seat to a white male passenger longing for a place to sit. After the arrest, African Americans gathered and encouraged others to boycott the Montgomery bus system. An underground society called the Montgomery Improvement Association was formed and with no surprise Martin Luther King Jr. was elected the president. The group’s methods were efficient and most importantly non violent. The group’s protests had success and soon after, the bus lines abandoned their segregated rules and African Americans no longer had to boycott the bus system. King dedicated his life to being a civil rights activist. Today he is most famously remembered for his non-violent protests in working toward racial equality. King was such an important figure and served as inspiration in so many people’s lives. The Birmingham Campaign began on April 3, 1963. They used precisely coordinated marches and sit-ins as their tactics against racism and racial segregation in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. The non-violent campaign was coordinated by the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and also by Martin Luther King's Conference. On April 10, Circuit Judge W. A. Jenkins...

My History

...I remember as a young girl going to my grandmother's home town with her every other summer. We would get up early in the morning, and my grandmother would have food packed in a basket and sodas in an ice chest. We would tell my grandfather, parents, and siblings goodbye. Although the ride was long, my grandmother would talk about the adventure we were about to take. My cousin Angela and I couldn’t wait to leave Los Angeles, California and head to Montgomery, Alabama. I loved going to the south to visit my family especially my cousins. Half way between our destination, we would spend a couple of days at my great-aunt's home in Houston to rest and replenish our treat chest as my grandmother would call it. When we arrived at my aunt’s home in Montgomery, I felt different but did not know why. When we came to visit family members showed up from other towns in Alabama and Georgia to see us. Everyone in my family ran their own business even the women. My Uncle Richard was a registered pharmacist who owned a pharmacy in the Black business district. My Aunt Ethel had her own business she was a tailor and also did upholstery. Uncle Jack and Aunt Francis owned a construction company. Another relative named Romie ran a family owned a grocery store. Little did I know, all these people had a hand in changing American history? Aunt Georgia would serve meals to the church’s and people participating in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. While all the other children played, I found myself staying in...

Race and Your Community

...Race and Your Community Racism is an issue that people have to deal with on a daily basis. It is a topic that a lot of people do not like to address but something that we know exists. I have lived in Millbrook, Alabama, a city outside of Montgomery, Alabama for all of my life and since I can remember the racial relations have been fine. I am sure that everything is not 100 percent but we live in the same community with no problems. In this Cultural Diversity class, I learned that discrimination is not limited to just race. I learned that a person may experience discrimination because of their gender, their religion or even their choice of clothing, just to name a few. There are people in my community who look like me. I am an African American and there is a good representation of African Americans in Millbrook, Alabama. The majority race in my community is the Caucasian race and there are Hispanics represented in my community too. The Caucasian race looks different from me because of the color of their skin and the texture of their hair. The Hispanics in my community look different from me by the color of their skin, hair texture and the language that some of them speak. There is no one neighborhood that only has one race in it. There is some representation of all of the races in the majority of the neighborhoods. Although we are not the majority, we are not the minority. If you come to visit, you may be surprised at how well all the races do get along...

Differentiating Reasoning

...deductive argument. The issue described pertains to the population of home schooled children in the state of Alabama having the right to participate in interscholastic extracurricular activities. The author argues several points that lead to the same conclusion; that homeschoolers have the same right to join extracurricular sports in the community as public or private school children. “Interscholastic extracurricular activities are an important complement to the academic curriculum. Participation in a comprehensive extracurricular and academic program contributes to student development of the social and intellectual skills necessary to become a well-rounded adult.” “Public schools do not "own" competitive athletics; they belong to the students, their families, and the residents of Alabama.” Several valid premises are made through this argument that I believe make it deductive. “A homeschooled student is a student just the same as a public or private schooled student and therefore deserves equal and fair treatment, especially by the state sponsored educational establishment. This should apply to athletics as well as academics.” Another point that was made, that I find to be a little disturbing, is the premise that an illegal immigrant can enroll a child into our public school system giving them an education and allowing them to participate in extracurricular activities. So why is it that a legal citizen enrolling in extracurricular activities an issue? It shouldn’t be especially...

...and the Black Muslims, Brown V. Board of Education of Topeka, Kans., Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. African Americans were slaves until the Civil War ended in 1865; however the United States was still divided on the rights of African Americans. African Americans even though they were freed from slavery they were not treated equally and did not have all the same rights as white folks did such as voting rights. The 15th Amendment was ratified in 1870 and stated “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." (Bowles, 2011, 1.1). This was an important step for African Americans to be treated equally in the United States. However it was just the beginning and the Southern States would try to fight this Amendment by created many different barriers for the African Americans to block their rights to vote. Some of these barriers that were used were poll taxes and literacy tests, along with intimidation and violence. Thomas Mundy Peterson of New Jersey became the first black person to vote because of the 15th Amendment. In that same year Hiram Rhoades Revels became the first African American to sit in the U.S. Congress. With the struggles the African Americans were facing even after the 15th Amendment lead to black people creating organization to help bring national attention to their struggles...
