There is a saying, ''teach your kids discipline from a young age", but when did discipline become abuse? 49.4% of children who die from child abuse are under the age of one. Thus, it's not only infants, it's all ages ranging from 0-18 who are abused. "Over the past 10 years, more than 20,000 American children are believed to have been killed

Some people may consider smacking as a form of instilling obedience in their child from a young age. The essay will be segmented into 3 parts, firstly the supporting evidence behind why a parent my feel the need to smack a child is a necessary form of discipline, secondly why smacking a child is not the best form of controlling a adolescent and lastly ones opinion on the topic after analyzing the contrasting literature. Many people agree on the fact that smacking a child should be allowed in order to encourage appropriate behaviour. Corporal Punishments may cause a child to think twice before doing the wrong thing again due to the consequences, which consequently develops decision making skills at a young age. Child Welfare

...Child abuse is something that the world knows about but it really needs more attention than it deserves. According to Zoe Marie, a 2004 study done by the US Department of Health and Human Services stated that just over four children die every day as a result of child abuse, which is terrible. That means that every six hours, a child dies because of some form of maltreatment (Marie 1). The four main types of child abuse are psychological, neglect, physical and sexual. The most frequently encountered type of abuse is neglect. In 2004, 62.8 of abused children in the United States were neglected, according to Prevent Child Abuse New York. The issue of child abuse and neglect is serious, controversial, and is escalating in today’s society. Many people are not aware, but child abuse is rampant in our society. Many child abuse and neglect cases go unreported because a person may not know the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect or perhaps the person or person may feel that this is an private issue and needs to be handle with in the home and no outsiders should be involved. Without the proper awareness of child abuse and neglect and the involvement of everyone this issue will continue to raise our eyebrows. I recently did an interview with Sarah Johnston, an counselor with protected services. Mrs. Johnston started off by saying about that there are over 3 million cases of child abuse in America each year. These are some of the questions I asked Mrs. Johnston about about child...

Psychoanalytical Literary Lens

...A child who is abused by her parent wonders about the reason behind the abuse. Thinking about the reasoning behind the abuse leads the child to believe that she deserves to be punished. The belief that she deserves to be punished leads to lower self-esteem. Low self-esteem causes the individual to seek more power. The search for more power leads her to abuse her own children to feel better about herself. Feeling better about herself by abusing another leads the girl to realize that she is the same as her abusive parent. The realization that she is turning into an abusive parent like her own makes the individual change her behaviour because she does not want her child to experience abuse like she did. The psychoanalytical literary lens helps interpret the actions of a character by focusing on human behaviours and the thought processes that lie behind them. The idea is that psychoanalyzing characters in a novel can aid in analyzing the author. A simpler extension of this notion is that analyzing the characters in a novel helps readers learn something about their own lives. This lens focuses on the reasoning...

...is an awful situation, but I understand why it continues to happen. For example, in an abusive family household, children in that household who are abused at a young age will start to believe that behavior is normal and therefore they will repeat the same abuse to their children. They will have the mentality that “if I have to go through it, so do you”. For example, I read the novel A Child Called It and David’s mother was extremely abusive, However, it is mentioned that she grew up in an abusive household as well. She was angry and still had rage full emotions bottled up inside of her, therefore she continued the cycle of violence....

Child Abuse

...Child abuse is one of the biggest problems facing America today. Children whose parents abuse them often turn to a life of crime, or suffer physical or mental scars. In severe cases the child may even die. In Saint Louis a boy was attacked by a pack of dogs, after he had finished playing basketball at the local court. If his mother had reported him missing he may have been found in time to rescue him, instead he bled to death under a tree. (Davis 3A) Of course this is an extreme case of child abuse, and it is often not this severe. The best way to prevent child neglect is to start family planning at an earlier age. It is tough for many people to understand why anyone would abuse a child, but it happens more than people think. Intergenerational transmission of violence is a major cause of child abuse. Children who were abused when they were young are more likely to be abusive when they grow up and have children. (Compton’s 1) Some studies have shown that thirty percent of abused children grow up to be abusive parents. Children who were not abused and grow up to have children are much less likely to be abusive parents, only two to three percent of people will be abusive. (Child Abuse and Neglect 1) People would tend to question why a child who knows how hard it was when they were young would grow up and do this to their child. Children grow up thinking that everything their parents do is right. The problem is when these children are abused they don’t often learn that it is the...

Child Protection

...Child Protection The process of protecting children from abuse or neglect, preventing impairment of their health and development, and ensuring they are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care that enables children to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully.’ (Source: Working Together to Safeguard Children, 2006). It is essential that children are safeguarded from maltreatment and impairment of their health and development not only to prevent the terrible day-today suffering some children are subjected to, but also to ensure that children are safe from these abuses to protect their long-term well-being (Combrink-Graham, 2006: 480). Deliberate and sustained maltreatment, which includes physical, emotional and sexual abuse of children, is not confined to any particular group or culture; it pervades all groups, classes and cultures. So as practitioners it is our professional duty of care to ensure that every child has the same amount of safeguarding as the next. It is also vital that as Early Years professionals we understand the roles and procedures of the services available for children and families so that we may offer the best advice possible. There are two areas of guidance statutory and non-statutory. A service which is defined as statutory is one that the Local Authority have a legal duty to supply. The Local Authority is obliged by statute to provide some services, for example, social services, NHS hospital...

...Is Corporal Punishment Needed to Discipline Children? PSY 101 Introduction to Psychology February 24, 2014 Child discipline is very important, without it, society would have many problems. The questions arise when we discuss what kind of child discipline is most effective. Times have changed and how our parents and grandparents were disciplined when doing unwanted behaviors would today be a severe child abuse. Even for middle age parents of today there is a contrast in the way corporal punishment is used on the youth of today. It is quit the controversy about whether corporal punishment should be used as an acceptable form of child discipline and if it acceptable at what point is the line crossed from physical discipline to child abuse. So many countries have banned corporal punishment in all three aspects of corporal punishment. The three disciplines of corporal punishment is home, school, and judicial. In this paper we will be focusing on the home. Home is where discipline is the most effective and happens most frequently. Besides home there is school where here in the United States most schools are not allowed to use corporal punishment. Twenty-eight states ban corporal punishment of public schoolchildren, an increase of 26 states over the past 30 years; but inside the family, legalized corporal punishment of children remains entrenched and unbudging” (Susan, 2006).It is used in the judicial system but only under extreme circumstances and under strict guidelines...

However, drawing lessons from some of the verses in the bible clearly indicates that the practice of abortion violates the moral obligations. The Load had already chosen prophet Jeremiah to be a famous prophet to the nations. God Himself new Jeremiah as a human being before birth and considered him to live in order to carry out His mission. God could not have allowed Jeremiah to die. Biblically it is...

Child Abuse

...in a house of terror. If only he had someone to speak up for him and help him through these trying times. When a child enters the world, they are full of innocence and virtue. It is the parent’s job to teach their child the rights and wrongs of life. They must nurture, love and take care of their newborn well into adulthood. Regrettably, every child is not born with a compassionate parent. There are some parents who either don’t know how to take care of their child or blame their offspring for their misfortunes. These predicaments can lead to child abuse; physical and mental. Child abuse is defined as the maltreatment of a child by a parent or guardian (Winton, 29). A common belief is that child abuse only occurs in poor families or bad neighborhoods, but this is not true. Child abuse crosses all racial, economic, and cultural lines. Sometimes, families who seem to have it all from the outside are hiding a different story behind closed doors. Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse might be the most visible sign, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse or child neglect, also leave deep, long lasting scars. Some signs of child abuse are subtler than others. Ignoring children’s needs, putting them in unsupervised, dangerous situations, or making a child feel worthless or stupid are also considered forms of child abuse (Winton 36)....
