There are many characters that are used within Mary Murfee’s “The Prophet of The Great Smoky Mountains”. All the characters are uniquely and descriptively written to give readers a sense of who is being told about within the story. Mary Murfee is able to do this because the back drop or location of the story is comparable to where she was born, Murfeesboro, Tennessee. (www.docsouth.unc.edu) This story was written in 1885, 30 years after the Civil War, and received great praise from both the southern and northern states. To provide a character analysis of any one character in this story, it would have to be Dorinda Cayce. Dorinda Cayce is a character who has many American characteristics and can be compared to some Americans of today. The question to be asked, does the character Dorinda Cayce really represent what it is to be uniquely American?…show more content… First, definition of uniquely is existing as the only one or as the sole example; single; solitary in type or characteristics. (dictionary.com) Second, what makes someone an American? Most would say being born in America or one who lives in America. But, what if being American is simply living with attitude or personality? Dorinda Cayce definitely had attitude and personality that personifies her being uniquely American. To begin, Dorinda Cayce is hard working and introduced in the beginning as a caring woman for her family. Is that what makes him uniquely American?
