...Joanne Frye HSER 340 Abstract Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive seeking and use of addictive substances despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her. Introduction Dramatic advances in science over the past 20 years have shown that drug addiction is a chronic relapsing disease that results from the prolonged effects of drugs on the brain. (Leshner, 1997) It is considered a brain disease because drugs change the brain structure and how the brain works. (Volkow and Schelbert, 2007) As with many other brain diseases, addiction has embedded behavioral and social-context aspects that are important parts of the disorder itself. Therefore, the most effective treatment approaches will include biological, behavioral, and social-context components. Recognizing addiction as a chronic, relapsing brain disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use can impact society’s overall health and social policy strategies and help diminish the health and social costs associated with drug abuse and addiction (Leshner, 1997). Addiction as a Disease For decades, the orthodox view in neuroscience and psychiatry has been that addiction is a psychiatric disease (Jellinek, 1960). In 1968 it was included in the second revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, positioning it explicitly as a mental illness for the purpose diagnosis and treatment (APA, 1968). In the 1990’s...

...‘The consolidation of royal authority in the years 1487-1509 was due to Henry VII’s control over the nobility’ Explain why you agree or disagree with this view Henry came to power in 1487 after Richard III was killed at the Battle of Bosworth. The government by 1485 was well organised but had come perilously close to collapse on a number of occasions during the fifteenth century. Therefore Henry faced many problems such as crown authority as Henry was not entitled to the crown and he was only supported by some because he was an alternative to Richard III. He knew he had to establish his claim to the throne and to secure his immediate future. Henry also faced problems with the nobles as he had to balance their wealth and territorial power which they had as they could become potential rivals and may spark a rebellion such as Lovell and Stafford. The uneven control that the crown had over the kingdom was another problem for Henry, as it was stronger in the more populated areas of the south and east, but looser in the borderlands, especially with the lack of a developed system of local administration. Henry had problems with the poor finances of the crown which had been depleted by wars at home and abroad and the council learned and council in star chamber. Henry’s biggest challenge was to win the support of the nobles, while at the same time making sure that their power and arrogance were controlled. Henry had two options which he could take: either to buy their support...

The substantive content of the article appears as originally published. REPRINT NUMBER 48107 IN CONTEXT Designing Organizations That Are Built to Change As the pace of globalization and social change quickens, executives are correctly calling for greater agilit y, flexibilit y and innovation from their companies. Largely ignored in these pleas, however, is the simple fact that organizations have been designed to seek sustainable competitive advantages and stability. Indeed, buried deep in the managerial psyche, and bolstered by decades of theory and practice, is the assumption that stability is not only desirable and effective but also attainable. In their classic book The Social Psychology of Organizations, Daniel Katz and Robert L. Kahn note, “One can define the core problem of any social system as reducing the variability and instability of human actions to uniform and dependable patterns.” The popularity of process improvement efforts, from total quality management to Six Sigma programs, provides ample evidence of the consuming desire for stability and predictability in today’s organizations. In fact, those are the very qualities rewarded by the financial markets. It is not surprising, then, that most large-scale change efforts fail to meet their...

...Erin St Gelais St. Gelais 1 Mrs. Trouville English CP III 15 December 2015 Should Schools Be Done with Homework? Have you ever enjoyed a day of relaxation? Have you ever experienced the thrill of having a day just to goof off? Has homework kept you away from that? Kids hate homework. Some kids say that homework is just what they learned in class the same day and they are just repeating it. Why do students need to repeat what we did in class that day? Is it necessary? Some reasons why homework is not effective is that many teachers give too much homework, and often teachers do not coordinate the quantity given. Secondly, unnecessary assignments raise the stress level of the students. However, the main argument against homework is that most of it is just boring practice. Teachers give too much homework to kids and it’s not necessary. In an article written by Lance J. Falk it states that “kids have lives beyond school and schoolwork. About 65 percent of kids, ages of 6-13, play competitive sports. But, unfortunately, some of those kids quit playing the sport they love due to the fact that they have too much schoolwork to tackle during their evening” (Falk). If a student has three soccer practices a week, which consumes 2.5 hours of his Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons, how do you think he or she feels? He or she would obviously feel very tired, right? But now if that same student had two hours of homework three of the five...

The company has implemented different strategies to protect its unique product as well as the market share from other competing companies such as Samsung. Although the company produces other household product, Nokia mobile is the main product of the company (Worley et al., 2011). Porter’s five forces of Nokia Company. The Nokia Company faces the porter’s five forces of completion in its daily operation. The forces include the entry by other firms, power of the buyer, power of supply, competitive rivalry and substitute goods (Rampersad & Hussain, 2014). 1. Entry by new firms The threat to entry by other firms in the market is quite low as the company has established its strong market share in the mobile phone industry. The forces are low because new companies who wish to venture into the industry have to invest heavily in terms of innovation and marketing (Rampersad & Hussain, 2014). 2. Power of suppliers The threat of power of supply is moderate as the company can acquire the new materials from many equipment suppliers. Therefore, the company can easily negotiate and bargain with the willing mobile phone hardware (Steers et al., 2010). 3. Powers of buyers The company faces a high force...
