The story of El Cid is similar to that of Robin Hood, the hero of England but the story of Robin Hood is all but a legend. The story of El Cid, the Spanish Hero of Castile is true and cannot be made up. Similar to Robin Hood he was thought of by some as a traitor and criminal but to some he was somewhat worthy of canonization. People believed El Cid to be a Christian hero as well and that is a reason why he was worthy of canonization because he provided for them. Because of some people thinking he was a criminal they also wanted to think of him as a legend. The early life of El Cid consisted of his father being part of a minor nobility of Castile. When Ferdinand I died he divided his empire among his children of who one of them was Sancho II who thought he should have gotten his father's entire kingdom. He then set off to claim his brothers and sisters kingdoms by waging war on them. But first Sancho needed to defeat the Kingdom of Aragon and El Cid proved very helpful in doing this. Afterwards El Cid was named commander of the Royal Armies. Then was time for Sancho to start taking his siblings kingdoms with the help of El Cid. They were able to take the kingdoms of Sancho’s brothers in Leon and Galicia and his sister Elvira. Sancho then decided to go against his sister Urraca but was killed by one of her soldiers. Once Sancho’s brother Alfanso heard of Sancho’s death he went to claim his lands and throne. El Cid was frightened for he had helped Sancho rage war against Alfanso but Alfanso couldn’t get rid of him for he was a great soldier. Another reason why El Cid wasn’t killed was because the people of Castile were not happy with a king from Leon but El Cid was from Castile and Alfonzo could use that as an
