Elbridge Gerry was important to our country because he played in a lot of roles like he was the vice president for president Maddison. He also played a role in the continental congress in 1776. He graduated from Harvard to be a merchant. He died while he was in office at the age of 70. Elbridge Gerry was the fifth vice president of the United States he was in office for one year (1813-1814). Elbridge Gerry was born in Marblehead Massachusetts on July 17 1744. His parents’ names were Thomas and Elizabeth they had 11 kids and Elbridge Gerry was one of the eleven children. After Gerry was done with school and graduated he joined the family business. He also considered a public service as a responsibility and not something for a personal gain. He believed that a good government should be a mixed government. He also feared that the people’s freedom would jeopardize the liberty of the people’s right. This is why he was really quiet during the constitutional convention because he did not want to ruin the people’s rights for their liberty. Gerry was a very active person during the constitutional convention. During the emerging of the constitution in those hot tense days in Philadelphia he was getting more and more nervous that the constitution will be jeopardizing the people’s liberties.
