Why Is Grity Important To Long-Term Success?

After the Great Recession, lower and middle class Americans found themselves furiated by the rising salaries of their upper class neighbors. According to these workers, their idols’ salaries could only be attributed to their luck involving inheritances or physical appearances. In actuality, the wealthy Americans’ achievements come from their leading personality trait: grit. Striving to reach one's goals under all circumstances separates those who succeed at great measures from the average and the failures. Nevertheless, grit only determines success beyond the academic level, because the Common Core requires students to acquire general knowledge rather than a specific area which they would succeed in once they reach the workplace. To illustrate, there are an abundance of historical figures that drudged through murky school waters, including Thomas Edison, George Foreman, and Aretha Franklin. In fact, Thomas Edison often needed his colleagues to do a majority of the technical work. This is because his colleagues did hold the scholastic intelligence that he lacked, but they did not have the grit that kept him innovating over the years. This long lasting success is described in the work of Angela Duckworth, a professor of Psychology who has analyzed this trait for the last ten years. From her, it is now known that grit correlates with achieving dreams, rather than high grades. This can be illustrated by the thousands of seniors graduating each year, yet only a select few make it to be household names, and these figures often varied in their knowledge. Looking back on the years after the Great Recession, those who remained affluent in the hard years had earned their spot with endless work, just like Thomas Edison had.
