Why Is Harrison Bergeron Truly Equal

Many of us want equality, however, is it really possible? In “Harrison Bergeron,” although the Handicapper General claims that everyone in society is finally equal, is that truly the case? Everyone was not equal because few were below average, above average, and others were still talented. First of all, the handicaps given to talented people is used to bring them down to average. However, people who wear the handicaps may be below average. For example, in the story, good-looking people wore masks to make them less attractive. This is significant to my claim because the masks actually make them less appealing than average. If people were too pretty or beautiful, they’d have to wear hideous masks, which makes everyone not equal, because some …show more content…
They my believe that George is kept average since he isn’t able to think very well, therefore making him have average intelligence. However, one must consider his weights. The weight handicaps make him weaker compared to “average” people like Hazel. As you may recall, George’s weights, which were “47 pounds of birdshot in a canvas bag,” were so heavy that Hazel told him to lay and rest, but George replied that “I don’t mind. I don’t notice it anymore.” It also states that, “George was white and trembling, and tears stood on the rims of his red eyes.” However, this didn’t happen to Hazel, so, technically, they weren’t equal. Also, it was unfair for the ballerinas as well. Only “two of the eight ballerinas had collapsed to the studio floor.” The other six ballerinas were fine because they didn’t have the ear radios or weights. Therefore, they weren’t equal.
To sum this up, everyone in “Harrison Bergeron” was not equal because some were below average, above average, and/or still had their talents. Even with handicaps, “Harrison Bergeron” has proved that everyone is society cannot be completely equal, that being the case, everyone in the story was not entirely

Harrison Bergeron Analysis

...In “Harrison Bergeron”, it was the year 2081, and everybody was forced to be equal, but they weren’t truly equal. In the text, there was many details that I used to draw conclusions to support my inference. The main example, obviously, was that everybody was forced to wear handicaps ,with absolutely no exceptions. There were multiple times in the text where I got more information about my inference that everybody was involuntarily equal. In the text, the author implied that everybody was forced to be equal a quantity of times. For instance, “They were burdened with sashweights and bags of birdshot, and their faces were masked…”(page2). This statement demonstrates one reason why I inferred that the people in the short story were all...

Harrison Bergeron Equality

...Is equality really possible to achieve? “… All men are created equal that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights,” or so this statement from the Declaration of independence claims to be true. This although, is not correct because it was written to benefit wealthy white men and no one else. This is shown in the short story “Harrison Bergeron.” The author Kurt Vonnegut in a way illustrates how a so-called utopian society is actually dystopic while trying to reach equality for all. With the great use of the Bergeron characters, Vonnegut implies that equality is impossible to achieve if you don’t fight for it. The character of George Bergeron symbolizes all the people who are upset because they have to wear handicaps,...

The Theme Of Equality In Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron

...Kurt Vonnegut's 1961 short story Harrison Bergeron takes place in the dystopian future of 2081. The 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the United States Constitution make every American totally equal, with no differences in intelligence, attractiveness, strength, or speed. Americans live in a world where “Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else.” These laws are enforced by a particularly Orwellian-sounding officer called the Handicapper General. Harrison Bergeron, the fourteen-year-old titular character, is taken away from his parents. Due to their average intelligence, his parents, George and Hazel, are not fully aware of the tragic events. (In 2081,...

Satire In Harrison Bergeron

...T. J. Rankl Mr. Beach ELA Block 3 20 December 2016 Trouble in Paradise: Vonnegut’s Use of Satire in “Harrison Bergeron” What would happen to the world if the people were literally equal in every aspect of their lives? "Harrison Bergeron," composed by Kurt Vonnegut, concentrates on equity physically and mentally unequivocally controlled by the administration in the year 2081; the wonderful are constrained to look monstrous, the physically gifted are required to wear weights. With these impediments making everyone so equivalent, the world turned out to be altogether different, odd, and normal. Be that as it may, the legislature has no right or motivation to push the entire world to be "… rise to each which way." To smother somebody's normal...

Harrison Bergeron Symbolism

...Harrison Bergeron, a short story by Kurt Vonnegut, is for reading deeply. He doesn’t put anything in on accident. Today I would like to talk about his symbolism in this piece. The handicaps, in the story, are given to people, these devices are used in order to cripple one's specialties, who are smart, fast, strong, or even pretty. The symbolism in the piece of literature’s purpose is to show a struggle. The handicaps in the short story are used to convey this, this is relevant since throughout the story mental handicaps get worse and worse, every one of the ballerinas have hideous bags over their face, this just shows that in the real world if we truly strive for everyone to be absolutely equal would come with a great deal of a struggle will...

Harrison Bergeron Essay On Equality

...Just about everyone in this world has always wished that things were more equal between people. Imagine if you actually lived in a world that was equal in every aspect. We can see what is like in the story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut. He opens with a very telling sentence “The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal”. (Jr.). In this year 2081 their culture values equality so much that everyone is equal in every way. For instance when Hazel suggests that George remove the forty seven pound handicap he replies “If I tried to get away with it….then other people would get away with it…and pretty soon we’d be right back to the dark ages again, with everybody competing against everybody else”. (Jr.) In this world of “Harrison Bergeron”,...

...views on how it doesn’t work. Vonnegut’s perspective of family is also exceptionally candid. He is able to tie family life and values into politics. As a reader it is very hard to make out Vonnegut’s meaning because of his enormous amount of satire. Vonnegut’s strong beliefs in government and politics leave you wondering his true feelings about our government. In Vonnegut’s words, “George Bush has gathered around him upper-crust C-students who know no history or geography, plus not-so-closeted white supremacists, aka Christians, and plus, most frighteningly, psychopathic personalities, or PPs, the medical term for smart, personable people who have no consciences.” When Vonnegut says this he’s trying to show just how pathetic our government truly is. He sees the government as being such a big joke that it would make a fascinating reality television show. Anyone who watches reality Television shows can see just how impractical they are and how dumb people can become. He also explains within his words that average people who were C-students are running the government. It’s obvious that he feels as if the people given power and supremacy should not be elected to make the decisions for what is right and what is wrong within our country. Vonnegut also shows his opinion on the unqualified power holders of our government when he says, “ But I myself feel that our country, for whose constitution I fought in a just war…was taken over by means of the sleaziest, low-comedy, keystone Cops-style...

...NOTE: This PDF document has a handy set of “bookmarks” for it, which are accessible by pressing the Bookmarks tab on the left side of this window. ***************************************************** We are the last. The last generation to be unaugmented. The last generation to be intellectually alone. The last generation to be limited by our bodies. We are the first. The first generation to be augmented. The first generation to be intellectually together. The first generation to be limited only by our imaginations. We stand both before and after, balancing on the razor edge of the Event Horizon of the Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable. We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them.
