His victim lost a testicle.Plenty of students have lost body parts and/or lost their minds due to this atrocious effect.Hazing was viewed at many universities as nothing but pranks, which deans might have privately regret but nonetheless tolerated. According to the Rolling Stones Article by Rietman “Today, hazing is illegal in forty four states, including New Hampshire – and many colleges have aggressively cracked down on fraternity abuses. Those that failed to do so have increasingly found themselves on the wrong side of the law.” Last spring, Yale became the subject of a federal Title IX examination after a group of sixteen current and former students accused the school of creating a "hostile environment" for women, adduce a prank in which the pledges of Delta Kappa Epsilon, the same fraternity that overstated both Bush presidents as members, paraded outside the Yale campus chanting, extremely inappropriate accusations. In February 2011, a 19-year-old Cornell sophomore died of alcohol poisoning after taking part in an SAE hazing ritual( S.A.E stands for Sigma Alpha Epsilon.)Bowie State University Fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha member Kevin Hayes sued the college for three million dollars because he was paddled with a wooden plank ,body-slammed ,and beaten on a daily basis between September 2013 and December 2013, and was instructed not to tell anyone. They said “it makes you stronger," Hayes repeated. Hazing

...Michael Plasmeier Kaiser English 9H 4 May 2006 Hazing Paper Hazing is a very dangerous form of bullying. About 70 people have been killed by hazing in the last 20 years (Facts.com 2). “’Hazing’ refers to any activity expected of someone joining a group … that humiliates, degrades or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person's willingness to participate” (Hazing Defined 1). Most hazing deaths occur because the act goes too far; the hazers get carried away. Their intention is to have a team building activity or make sure members are up to snuff (Facts.com 2). However, this is not what really happens. The acts often cross the line, and the victims do not complain because they want to join the group (Facts.com 2). Teens often want to outdo one another; each year, teens do something more dangerous then what happened to them while they were the victims (Bowers 1; Bushweller 3). Not only can these acts be dangerous, but they are also an “abuse of power and [a] violation of human dignity” (High School Hazing). If teens can be educated that this hurtful and inhumane act of bullying is forbidden in high school, then they will know that it is not acceptable in college, where hazing becomes the most dangerous. Although high school hazing starts out and seems harmless, it can quickly escalate to being harmful, dangerous, and illegal. Hazing can very quickly turn from a harmless prank into a dangerous situation. In most cases, the victim will still...

Hazing

...An End to Insanity Pine cones thrown at your face, stripped naked and left in a cornfield, and water forced down your throat until you vomit. Do any of these acts sound familiar? They are some of the most familiar forms of hazing. Although hazing is illegal in most states, the actions of cruelty are still being preformed today, it is an enormous problem so why isn’t more action being taken on it. I think it is because a lot of today’s hazing goes unreported either the school which it took place at is to embarrassed of the incident, or the student him/herself are to embarrassed to share the knowledge with others. In an article from CQ researcher by Brian Hansen he asks the question Should More Be Done to Stop It? I believe Hansen focuses on the article from a medical standpoint although he does not state that hazing is on the rise he does say that deaths caused from hazing are now higher then ever. He gives examples as to why the trend may be on the rise so much, the contemporary media endorses such acts that de grate people on shows like “Fear Factor” or movies like “Jackass.” Students see these acts and they may think that they are “ok” to perform because they were viewed by a national audience. Hansen also says that many deaths occur because students arrive with the “disneyland ride notion” where it may seem scary but the operators know what they are doing and everything will be ok, when in reality many of the hazers choose heinous acts at random that have never been...

The Hazing Greek Thinking

...Students try to pick a Greek house that has members that think, act, and have the same hobbies as they do. The close-knit atmosphere combined with the desire to have their peers approval is a great example of the theory group minds. In group minds by novelist Doris Lessing, she states that “We also find our thinking changing because we belong to a group” (Lessing 595). This theory would explain how a member of a house can conform to the other member’s way of thinking. If everyone in the house believes that hazing is acceptable, others who are against it could start to also find it acceptable. This is how someone who usually thinks something like overdrinking is wrong, would soon find themselves taking one drink too many. Author Hank Nuwer used his book The Hazing Reader to describe what would happen if someone didn’t conform to how the others thought. When a house member begins to voice their opinion against a house activity, other members will try to convince this person to see the houses way of things, trying to make their opinion conform to be like everyone else's. If this...

Fraternity Hazing

...Fraternity Hazing Google App Integrated Collab https://www.google.com.ph http://www.planetpapers.com http://www.gannett.cornell.edu http://www.termpaperwarehouse.com 1. Hazing (subjecting newcomers to abusive or humiliating tricks and ridicule) has always been seen as a secretive campus activity when it comes to fraternities and pledging. As a result, Dr. Mark Taff resorted in his article that, "..a series of 168 cases of injuries and deaths related to fraternity hazing activities...[occurred] in the United States between 1923 and 1982" (2113). Young college men are being hospitalized and even worse, dying, just for a couple of friends that give them a sense of belonging. The major causes of hazing are the students' wanting a sense of belonging in a big college campus, the college's infrequent knowledge of what occurs in fraternities, and the unwillingness of fraternities to change tradition. Since hazing has been around for more than a century, one cannot expect the practice of hazing to stop all together. It will probably take years before hazing perishes from the fraternity scene. Nevertheless, until an end is put to hazing, solutions can be used to make hazing less common, until it no longer exists. These solutions that may be able to put an eventual stop to hazing, in the long run, are better education about fraternity hazing, stricter laws to prevent hazing from occurring, and more intervention from college administrators.  Stories of hazing incidents are...

The Greek Life Community on College Campuses

...The Greek Life Community on College Campuses Parker Thomas Community Paper Examining the details and different aspects of a certain community can give you a real insight on the different cultures and backgrounds of its inhabitants. Doing this can reveal information you may not have known before, or truths about the community that you thought you knew before. Many people base their opinions of a community on the general information that is known about them. However, you cannot truly understand these people unless you dig down and really investigate how they live and interact with the world. By studying, researching, and observing the community, you can unveil how the group is perceived and how those perceptions actually fit the society. While using several forms of, both primary and secondary, research I was able to discover many common themes and stereotypes that are incorporated with members of the Greek Life on college campuses. These themes consist of good and bad labels that have been put upon this community. While some hold true, I was able to disprove several others with my research. These themes have, both positively and negatively, effected the reputation and name of the Greek world and its members. They cause many people to be afraid or not want to become apart of this community, while they don’t realize the full truth. These members stand for much more than they are perceived to, and they have many durable and ageless principles that still exist today. However...

Ethnogrophy: Greek Life

...community and University, and preparation for future careers. They are referred to as Greek chapters because they are named according to the ancient Greek alphabet.”(Fullerton.edu) A fraternity is known to be a brotherhood that is unbreakable. There is a bond among members who share a common belief in an ideal, yet posses’ different temperaments, talents, and convictions. Yet being a member of greek life also comes with the stereotypical comments being thrown at you constantly. Some example would be: how guys in fraternities are considered as bro’s that just get together to drink beer and get with chicks, guys in fraternities always mistreat women and disrespect them, there is peer pressure to drink excessively, and finally that there is hazing involved within joining a fraternity. There is a long list of these stereotypes put on guys in fraternities, so I took it in my own hands to study the people I already hang out with to see if these stereotypes are true. The first stereotype that I was most interested about was whether or not fraternities are just drinking buddies for four years that just want to pick up women. To be honest before I was initiated...

...Content A fraternity (Latin frater : "brother") is a brotherhood, although the term sometimes connotes a distinct or formal organization and sometimes a secret society. A fraternity (or fraternal organization) is an organized society of men associated together in an environment of companionship and brotherhood; dedicated to the intellectual, physical, and social development of its members. History There are known fraternal organizations which existed as far back as ancient Greece and in the Mithraic Mysteries of ancient Rome. Analogous institutions developed in the late medieval period called confraternities, which were lay organizations allied to the Catholic Church. Some were groups of men and women who were endeavoring to ally themselves more closely with the prayer and activity of the Church; Others were groups of tradesmen, which are more commonly referred to as guilds. These later confraternities evolved into purely secular fraternal societies, while the ones with religious goals continue to be the format of the modern Third Orders affiliated with the mendicant orders. The development of modern fraternal orders was especially dynamic in the United States, where the freedom to associate outside governmental regulation is expressly sanctioned in law. There have been hundreds of fraternal organizations in the United States, and at the beginning of the 20th century the number of memberships equaled the number of adult males. (Due to multiple memberships, probably only 50%...

Sports

...Why Playing Sports Keeps High School Teens Out of Trouble There are a lot of benefits that a teen may experience from playing sports. When teens participate in sports, it is a fact that their chances of being involved in trouble are minimized. Teens who participate in sports acquire a lot of life skills overtime that help them become better people. One skill that a teen may learn from playing a sport can be as simple as how to become a better team player. Also playing sports help teens build self esteem while also taking up the majority of their free time outside of school. There are also things that cause trouble for teens when it comes to playing sports. These would be that teens may sometimes resolve to doing something negative for the sake of being a part of the team, not know how to handle the fame that may come from being a star athlete, and also it could cause a teen to have depression if he or she faces a losing season in a particular sport. Although some of these aspects are negative, most of the things that are experienced from playing sports ultimately lead to sports keeping teens out of trouble. In today’s society, technology has become a very popular thing. As more and more things like the TV, movies, computers, and video games are becoming the popular things, it has led teens to being much more isolated. This leads teens to becoming bored, which then leads them to be more likely to involve themselves in dangerous behavior. It used to be that these teens would go...

Addiction Among Teens

...Addiction Among College Students Kniecolle Brown Comm/156 Amy Leedy 08/24/13 The abuse of illicit drugs is affecting students on campuses causing addiction at colleges and universities all across the globe. Students attend colleges and universities all over the world, and arrive at these institutions with preconceived notions about studies, social activities, and new found freedom. Ironically, these elements, if not embraced maturely, often exacerbate underlying stressors that adversely affect students. Thus, the independence in which students find themselves, if not dealt with responsibly, can lead to addictions and other destructive behaviors, such as, late night partying, poor grades, and subsequently dropping out of school altogether. With the arrival of new students’ peer pressure to fit in can be an adequate reason for the student deciding to indulge in drugs and alcohol, as a way of acceptance into a group. There are many reasons that college students continue to drink and use drugs. Some may do it because of the pressure to fit in while gathering sociably, while others may see it as the cool thing to do. There is also the misconception...

Greek Life

...Trump, Eli Manning, Brad Pitt, Erin Andrews, Alicia Keyes, and Jennifer Garner. This group of people are all successful but being successful is not the only thing they have in common. Each one of them were a brother or sister of a Greek Organization at the college they attended. A Greek organization is more formally known as fraternity and sorority groups. These groups are an organized society of men and women connected together in an environment of friendship and brotherhood or sisterhood. They are dedicated to the academic and social growth of its members. For many years people have tried to ban Greek groups from college universities. These people say that fraternities and sororities do nothing to help the university. These people are wrong. I believe that fraternities and sororities are positive organizations that help the college and the students do well and should not be banned. Fraternities and sororities make the college experience more enjoyable for students, members are active in the community and the university, and after they graduate they will have multiple connections because of the many brothers and sisters they have. Greek organizations have a long history and it is taking serious by members. Grades are also an important factor to the brothers and sisters; they will not take their education lightly because they will be punished. There are a few things that could be done to resolve this dilemma: * I could tell Paul to stand his ground, and not take the drug. He could let his talent stand on its own. I would tell him that taking the drugs could be dangerous, and its simply wrong. * Paul could go to the athletic director to let them know what is going on. This may not be a suitable decision because of his loyalty to his teammates. This is a delicate situation, and it is to be taken seriously. Core Beliefs As a Christian, the issue is clear.
