Johnson & Johnson is being fined $2.2 billion to settle charges in which the company marketed drugs for unapproved uses and paid doctors and nursing home pharmacies to promote said drugs. Included in these falsified drugs is Natrecor, heart failure drug, Invega and Risperdal, for the treatment of schizophrenia. Risperdal was falsely advertised for non-schizopheric patients as a treatment for dementia in elderly patients. These improper claims led insurance companies to pay out money for medications that were wrongfully prescribed. Natrecor was advertised to treat patients with less severe heart failure then it was approved for. These false marketing tactics that Johnson & Johnson used to attract a bigger target put plenty of innocent patient’s health at risk. Their profit driven advertisement was cruel and showed no care for the lives of their victims. They backed up medication that was not for the betterment of their patients, which should be the main purpose of medication. Instead, these medications put patients, with already heightened health risk, in a worse situation. Johnson & Johnson lost site of the big picture, and that is the business their in; to help people with medical problems. They intentionally took advantage of patients, taxpayers, and the insurance industry by promoting medications as treatments for unapproved uses. Johnson & Johnson used innocent victims as means to their ends. Elderly patients were given a schizophrenia drug, insurance companies paid into these false claims in order for their patients to get the medications prescribed, and doctors and pharmacies were behind them all; as a backbone to Johnson & Johnson’s deceitful marketing. The company was blinded by the ends of their actions, profit, and in the process took advantage in many people that trusted in their claims. In order to resolve this issue, there needs to be stricter laws regulating the use and administration of drugs. Before doctors and pharmacies promote any products they must be required to know all side effects and uses of this drug, so that they are able to provide patients with accurate information. Furthermore, bans need to be placed on companies that can not, or choose not to advertise properly because they are putting many lives in danger.
