...not into a wedding at Grover’s Corners, where weddings are mighty short and plain. In this play I take the part of the minister. That gives me the right to say a few things more. Yes, for a while now the play gets pretty serious. Y’see some churches say that marriage is a sacrament. I don’t quite know what that means, but I can guess. This is a good wedding. The people here are pretty young, but they come from a good State, and they chose right. The real hero of this scene isn’t on stage at all. And you all know who that is. And don’t forget the other witnesses at this wedding: the ancestors. Millions of them. Most of them set out to live two-by-two. Millions of them. Well, that’s all my sermon. ‘Twan’t very long anyway. EMILY WEBB – Oh, Mama, just look at me one minute as though you really saw me. Mama! Fourteen years have gone by! – I’m dead! – You’re a grandmother, Mama – I married George Gibbs, Mama! - Wally’s dead too. – Mama! His appendix burst on a camping trip to Crawford Notch. We felt just terrible about it, don’t you remember? – But, just for a moment now we’re all together – Mama, just for a moment let’s be happy – Let’s look at one another! I can’t! I can’t go on! It goes so fast. We don’t have time to look at one another. I didn’t realize. So all that was going on and we never noticed! Take me back – up the hill – to my grave. But first: Wait! One more look! Oh, earth you’re too wonderful for anyone to realize you! Do any human...

...today to publicly advocate to those who admire and applaud Mr. Tushman for his work at Beecher Prep this year. As a parent of this year’s fifth grade class, I am honored to know that Mr. Tushman is our principal. As he mentioned in his commencement address, these children are in transition. Within this important shift, they are coming across somewhat-dicey topics for the first time. This is a huge phase for our kids and an extensive portion is spent at school. Having someone like Tushman as a role model comforts me that my child will continue to practice his morals and well-rounded standards at school. Tushman creates a safe environment where children can create bonds over the supervision of an astounding leader. He is so deeply enthusiastic with expanding the moral imagination of each child and developing character. I trust Mr. Tushman and the extent of his power to do what is best for our students. So why exactly are we all here today? To review Mr. Tushman upon his approach to integrating August Pullman into the community. August...

...never recognize me from that little kid I used to be. This change I went through wasn’t a choice, rather, a necessity as Herbert Spencer said “survival of the fittest” I changed because I had to. Everyone goes through some form of change. Someone may start a certain way then end up living their lives another way accordingly to the paths they chose to follow. The path I have taken taught me to be assertive and make people take notice of me. People are all traveling down their own roads growing and changing along the way. Joseph Campbell composed “The Hero’s Journey” to glorify...

...these perceptions give in to stereotypes, or totalizing what we believe to be true about a particular subject. It is important for us as a society to deviate from these generalizations, and see things for how they are without jumping to a conclusion. Julia Wood is a professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a published author who specializes in interpersonal communication. Through my Bridges Not Walls textbook I was able to read an excerpt from one of her most recent books which educated readers about human beings understanding of one another. She wrote about how it is easy for humans now days to often time’s stereotype or totalize people based off what little information we may know about them. To totalize is to “think and act as if a single aspect of a person is the totality of that person.”(Wood 178) In other words, basically allocating a person in to a certain category based off of one simple aspect that makes up their life. To hold one detail of a person above all others gives a jaded view of who that person really is. Totalizing can lead to having negative effects on the person who is the target of this generalization. One characteristic of a person does not define who they are, and took look at someone affected by dwarfism and only refer to them as “the short guy” is giving an unjust perspective to yourself and others around you. Mrs. Wood goes on to explain how “one reason people stereotype or totalize is that it’s easier to deal with a one- dimensional...

...There were many changes that occurred when the white explorers came to Niger Area, now known as Nigeria. Umuofia Mbantu and the other local clans have been living in an isolated society and culture for generations giving them plenty of time to adapted and live in their environment efficiently. They had developed many different religious beliefs that were different from the white Christian culture that settled the area. "You say that there is one supreme God who made heaven and earth," said Akunna on one of Mr. Brown's visits. " We also believe in Him and call Him Chukwu. He made all the world and the other gods." (Achebe, 179). Even when trying to understand the Christian faith their religious beliefs are so ingrained that they create commonalities that are not really there. Akunna continues to talk about how the many gods they worship are helpers of Chukwu because he cannot do everything alone. after reading akunna's statement I related it to Christianity of today and to me, the gods are like angels because in Christianity today,...

...Fiction movie. Each section will explain the communications concept and how it appears in the movie. The reason why I chose this movie is just simple. It is a classic movie released in 1994, written by my favorite director and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino who has a little role in this movie as well. The story of the movie is divided in seven narrative sequences and in order the reader of this paper to understand, it is necessary to see the movie. 1. Nonverbal behaviors of Kinesics, Haptics, Physical Appearance, and Artifacts Kinesics, Haptics, Physical Appearance, and Artifacts are types of nonverbal behaviors. Kinesics refers to body position and body motions, including those of the face (Wood, 2011, p. 100). Body postures and gestures may say whether we are open to interaction. Haptics is a term for nonverbal communication involving physical touch (Wood, 2011, p. 101). Applying this to the movie, there is a scene when Jules has a conversation with Vincent about a foot massage. They argue about meaning and importance of physical touch of women’s feet. The story is about when Tony Rocky Horror was thrown out of the window after he gave a foot massage to Marcellus Wallace’s wife. Physical appearance is how we look like and how we present ourselves on public. Western culture places extremely high value on physical appearance and on specific aspects of appearance (Wood, 2011, p. 101). Like Jules and Vincent, they always look good; dressed up in black suit, tie, and polished...

...father of the alto saxophone, Phil Woods has written history. Mr. Woods was the oldest person with a disability to play an instrument. He was born on November 2, 1931, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Phil was not born with any physical or mental disability he lived a very healthy life for many years. It wasn’t until the 70s hit him and he involved himself with many drugs. This turned his life upside down because he was focused to attend rehab for over 5 years. After Mr. Woods finished his therapy session he claims he would not go back to his past life. He missed playing the saxophone and devoted a great amount of time practicing. Ever since, he has been touring all around the world. From Paris to Australia he was known everywhere however, the drugs caught up to him in the 21st century he was diagnosed with emphysema. Making him a person who uses a wheelchair and air tank in order to breathe. This hindered his ability to play the saxophone and during a performance he stated the following. “ I have been playing this Selmer saxophone for many years but, the reality is it doesn’t treat an old ill man like myself anymore” (Phil Wood). This motivated Yamaha and (developing saxophone company) to create something that is easy to play as well as captures the sound Mr. Wood wants. And like this project Yamaha Running Head: The Disabled Music Scene Franco 4 was created. Phil Woods was recorded on live television playing...

...The society in Fahrenheit 451 is so twisted and disconfigured that Mr. Beatty even talks about it openly, not capable of understanding what he’s admitting. “You can’t build a house without nails and wood. If you don’t want a house built, hide the nails and wood. If you don’t want a man unhappy politically, don’t give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one. Better yet, give him none. Let him forget…”(58). This evidence sums up what the government is doing perfectly. It’s easier to have people who are content and ignorant than for them to be angry and fight over what they think is right. He even says, “The home environment can undo a lot you try to do at school. That’s why we’re lowered the kindergarten age year after year until now wer’e almost snatching them from the cradle”(57). In order to keep people from being aware of anything they “Cram them full of..facts... [so] they feel stuffed...Then they’ll feel their thinking”(58). So not only do they have children start school early, but they don’t even teach them anything besides the facts. It’s false education, and they do this so that everyone can be...

...be further divided into two types: physical and chronological setting. The physical setting as the name implies is the place where the story takes place. For example in the story “Trifles” the setting takes place in a kitchen as describe by the author “The kitchen in the now abandoned farmhouse of John Wright, a gloomy kitchen, and left without having been put in order — unwashed pans under the sink, a loaf of bread outside the breadbox, a dish towel on the table — other signs of incompleted work” Meyer, M. (2011), this specific description of the physical setting creates the ambience or the atmosphere for the rest of the story to develop upon. On the other hand chronological setting is the “when”. It is very important to note this type of setting as it gives clues as to why the characters in the story speak, behave, act or react in the ways they do. For example in the same story “Trifles”, the women are diminished by their counterpart husbands or males and this was because during the time the story took place women didn’t have as much rights as now and were...

I’m hoping that my essay proves that the Author was trying to show that people show loyalty in different ways. And what loyalty is to different kinds of people. Laurie Halse Anderson is showing in Chains that different people show loyalty and different ways and what loyalty means to the characters in her story. My point in my first body paragraph is to prove why Isabel...

...Ryan Hunter Jones Mrs. Zinsitz English III 7th 12 October 2010 When Decisions Change Everything In Arthur Miller's "The Crucible", the people of Salem are in a crisis and sometimes people who claim to be good aren't what they seem and may be in fact a hypocrite. Judge Danforth a senior judge during the Salem witch trials exposes his hypocrisy in his conflicts between Giles Corey, Mary Warren and the people of the town for the sake of his own reputation. Judge Danforth is a powerful man who comes to Salem to stop the hysteria and prosecute the witches. Danforth believes he... "does not let anything interfere with an exact loyalty to his position and his cause" (Miller 182). He represents the God given right of the Puritan law to make sure justice is served. However he did struggle with justice and especially Giles Corey. Giles, an elder in the town showed up in Judge Danforth's court to explain a misunderstanding about his wife who was now being convicted of being a witch. Giles explained that he "never had no wife that be so taken with books.. like his 3rd wife" (Miller 182). He was curious about why she enjoyed books so much, unfortunately he said it out loud one day and they..."come and take her out of my house" (Miller 182). He was also there to discuss that Thomas Putnam's daughter was falsely accusing George Jacob so that Mr. Putnam could get Mr. Jacob's land. Giles explained that "if Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property--that's law! And there is none...

...cause certain doom for the family and her Christian faith would be put to the test. The grandmother tries desperately to change her family's vacation destination as she tries to manipulate her son into going to Tennessee instead of Florida. Her reasons for wanting to go Tennessee were to make connections with some of her peers. The grandmother was also concerned about the children seeing Tennessee since they had already been to Florida. “The children have been to Florida before,” the old lady said. ”You all ought to take them somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad. They never have been east to Tennessee”. The children made comments to the grandmother “If you don’t want to go to Florida, why dontcha stay home?” The grandmother asked what you would do if the Misfit caught you. “I’d smack his face,” said the boy. The grandmother is about to do a deceitful thing. She knew her son didn’t want to take a cat to a motel. So the grandmother’s only thought was to bring the cat on the trip and hid it from the others. The logic behind her actions is that three days is too long to leave the cat and he would miss her. She was also afraid that the cat would asphyxiate himself if...

...and through presenting what she considers to be the better alternative. The society of Austen’s time no doubt differs from today in many ways; however, when the actual values of society are closely examined, it becomes apparent that there are some fundamental similarities. Money and class had a very strong influence on what was deemed ‘proper’ during the 19th century. The higher one’s class and economic level, the more highly respected one would be in society. Darcy, with his £10 000 a year and landed gentry background, is the social superior of the Bennets, who make only £2000 a year and have connections to relations in the lower class. This social superiority is part of why Darcy initially considers Elizabeth to be an unsuitable match for him. In his first proposal to her, he asks her “Could you expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of your connections? To congratulate myself on the hope...
