Standardized tests are poor because they measure a student's level of education by giving them tests that if they fail, it would jeopardize their future therefore they should get rid of them. It is wrong for a student to complete four years of high school with good grades and other good qualifications, and then have that student take a test and be placed at a remedial level due to the scores they receive. Standardized tests are a waste of time, because some people actually know the information and are smart, but they are just bad tests takers or maybe they just are not good with a test, which does not mean they should be put in remedial classes or be denied admission to the university they want to go to because of that. Standardized test are …show more content…
One of the things about standardized testing is that it only tests students for one day. There are smart people who have a high GPA, or do really well in school, but are bad testers. A lot of concern factors into why students might fail, like stress or anxiety. What if a student got into an argument that morning of the test and is feeling angry or sad, so now you are going to go take the test mad or however you are feeling which of course will impact how you will perform on the test. There are also children who are smart and have good grades, but because they did badly on a standardized test they cannot get into the schools they want. Standardized testing also brings students a lot of stress and anxiety because they have been working hard their whole life to get good grades and pass classes. Now they know if they do bad on this one test their future will be affected or delayed, so they stress over it, which eventually become bad for …show more content…
The students now feel the pressure from the teachers and start panicking and stressing over these standardized tests on top that they are lacking the skills that they need because the teachers are not teaching fundamentals due to the pressure they are under to make the children pass those tests. This is all a cycle that repeats itself. According to Columbia University “The success of the schools is dependent on the performance of their students. The federal funds are given only to those schools that perform well. This adds an extra pressure on public schools to constantly evaluate their performance. This often leads to unhealthy competition among the schools. The impacts of standardized tests on high school students have evoked a mixed response. Strict schedule and tough screening process prove to be a torture for some students. Though some adapt easily to standardized tests. These tests have been found to reduce group activities among students. Because the students spend a lot of time in preparing for standardized tests and therefore, skip the daily routines of

Standardized Testing Argumentative Analysis

...Standardized testing has been a well-debated topic in the U.S. for a long time. The debate is whether standardized tests should be restricted or expanded. It is wrong to judge a student based on one end of the year test, when they have so much more to show throughout their school year. It is almost as these standardized tests make teachers teach their students differently by making them teach to what is going to be on the test rather than the normal curriculum. There are many things wrong with standardized testing, including inaccuracy in scoring standardized writing tests (Au & Gourd, 2013). There has also been a resistance and reform movement against standardized testing (Neill, 2016). Standardized testing needs to be restricted through...

Arguments Against Standardized Testing

...Standardized Testing Standardized testing should not be required for admission to college because it doesn't
really tell you anything. Why make someone take the ACT, SAT, or any IQ test just to see if their smart enough for college, or to even get in that specific college. Some people don't do well with test taking so they get a bad score. All that really shows if your good at test taking or not. This is why standardized test should be abolished from college admissions. A standardized test is called such because everyone takes the same test with the same questions, so ones performance can be compared to everyones else, in order for a relative score to be obtained (Lurie, Karen. "Standardized Testing.”). The first SAT was published in 1926 and administered 8,040 people. Standardized tests serve to offer measure of aptitude. There are standardized test that can measure school progress, intelligence, memory, and behavior capabilities. Some standardized tests are given to a whole group of people at once, others are given individually. There are also...

For example they show the school districts lots of data and lets teachers know has to be cover again. Although people may think differently there is a lot that cause more damage than more beneficial. For instant they cause stress on students, they’re are too many tests and they are very expensive. We should not have standardized testing because of the bad things that could occur! Arguments Against Standardized Testing

...where a student is having a bad day and does not get a good score on a test, or are maybe simply bad test takers. Then there are the students on the opposite end of the spectrum where they have an excellent day and are fantastic guessers and get an amazing score. Does this truly measure the success that students can achieve in today's world with one simple test score that admits him/her into college or advance him/her to the next grade. Although multiple people believe standardized testing effectively measures student achievement, I believe that standardized tests can not measure how well a student will succeed at the next level in life. The main reason why standardized testing is emphasized in all the schools across the country is the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This act was made to revamp the Elementary and Secondary Act passed by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965. The NCLB act increases the role of the federal government in guaranteeing the quality of public education for all children in the United States. The major change in the schools that ct...

Standardized Testing Rhetorical Analysis

...While saying standardized testing may be the best way to compare students with each other, the author and I disagree. While the author stating why we should have no standardized tests had a few minor slips, I overall agree with that they are trying to say. Some students may just be better at testing than others. Standardized testing should not measure how smart someone is. The author uses pathos, it is based on what she feels what is right. When the she says “testing only calculates the performance of a student during that day, not the development during the whole year.” I agree, if the person taking the test was not feeling well that day, or did not get enough sleep then he or she could have done bad. It is a fact that schools do spend a...

The Pros And Cons Of Standardized Testing In Elementary Schools

...students, and last but not least; witnessing that the stress of the school is rising…You know it’s testing time. This all happens at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. Many tests take 1 to 2 days when others, have a duration of 2-3 weeks. As an employee of an elementary school, I have had many years of preparation and participation of such events. All employees must sign affidavits before administration of tests occur, and all materials are delivered and picked up on a scheduled timeframe. “Standardized Tests are a type of exam that assess the student’s capability on the...

Summary: The Rise Of ADHD

...“industrialized” by standardized testing, and this form of education is simply to boring in a over stimulating world; and thus, the rise of ADHD, has risen with the introduction to standardized testing. Some of the assumptions made by the thinker was that rise of ADHD, has risen with the introduction to standardized testing, divergent thinking as been minimized in recent education systems, and that modern education is not a natural learning environment, and must be reformed. In all of this, the rise of ADHD increases as one would travel east, and to more industrial cities, and urban areas, like D.C. Also, people have a tendency to learn better in groups....

Annotated Bibliography for Standardized Testing

...Annotated Bibliography for Standardized Testing Perry Barr Devry University Annotated Bibliography for Standardized Testing : I was always told that one bad apple will spoil the whole bunch; which is true. Standardized Testing should be used to find the child with a learning disability and work with that child. Not to grade the whole school and that school gets a poor grade. That’s like taking a bunch of apples and throwing them out just because a couple of them were spoiled. A person needs to work with the good parts of the apple and make apple pie. Improve the child by adding things that will take that child higher and increase their ability to learn. Gregory J. According to education researcher Gregory J. Cizek, anecdotes abound “illustrating how testing... produces gripping anxiety in even the brightest students, and makes young children vomit or cry, or both.” On Mar. 14, 2002, the Sacramento Bee reported that “test-related jitters, especially among young students, are so common that the Stanford-9 exam comes with instructions on what to do with a test booklet in case a student vomits on it.” Cizek is an education researcher and I believe his studies are in depth to the topic I am documenting. Standardized Testing

...Abstract Standardized testing does not define ones intelligence or ability. There has always been a quarrel about the tests: students may be very intelligent but are really bad test takers. The No child left behind act was an educational preference forced upon educators that will help them gain an equal opportunity at academic success. The law would promote this through standardized tests. Standardized testing may help students gain wonderful academic success however there are also things that can hinder scholars as well. Standardized testing has its advantages and disadvantages. Over the years standardized testing has been a trending topic, some people are in favor for the test while others are not. How can one test determine an individual’s ability or intelligence when students are people with needs and concerns beyond standardized testing! What is standardized testing? Standardized tests are tests where students answer multiple choice questions where each question only has one correct answer and are usually designed from experience and not theory (How standardized testing damages education ). The tests are based on educational aspects such as reading, math, and science skills (depending upon the type of standardized test being provided). Standardized testing is a law required aspect that is supposed to help scholars academic success and schools expand (with the use of federal funding). Against Standardized Testing Essay

...In the United States, millions of students partake in what we call standardized testing. Standardized testing is an unfair test that is administered to students and they are scored in a consistent manner. These tests are designed in such a way that the questions and procedures for scoring are homogenously consistent and students are scored in a predetermined, yet standard manner. The performance of a student should not be shown through standardized testing because the results are inaccurate. Standardized tests puts a lot of pressure on educators, students and parents; producing anxiety and causing parents to allow their children to opt out of tests. Standardized tests should be boycotted as a whole in schools because it is an irrelevant and inaccurate way of testing. These tests hinder a student’s overall learning potential. “Teachers agreed that standardized tests are unfair and provides misleading results” (Map and Kennedy 130). The current use of standardized testing does not in fact help educate students with their learning. Too much time is spent testing when it could be spent...

Stnadardized Testing: Good or Bad?

...Standardized Testing: Good or Bad? Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge. We all crave knowledge, we all learn new things every day, and we all make decisions based on our knowledge. It comes to no surprise that a major part of our lives is education, from pre-k to graduate school. Being successful in our education consists of hard work, a little luck, and now, more importantly than ever, being able to pass exams. Tests are one of the only ways to see how well we understand a subject and in many instances, can either make you or break you. Testing, however, should be based on the individual, where differences in the way students learn should be taken into account. As of several years ago, however, our education system has moved away from this individual approach, and has adopted a broad and general way to measure success: standardized testing. We have all taken standardized tests at point in our lives, be it the FCAT or the SAT which had a huge influence on which colleges we were accepted to. There is no argument that standardized testing does have its advantages, such as allowing schools and states to compare their education systems to one another, however, standardized testing being implemented as a major factor in our education has overall had a negative impact on education. The use of standardized testing in deciding whether a student passes or fails is simply wrong. Standardized testing should not be implemented into our school systems...

Standardized Testing Results

...Results of Standardized Tests The main purposes of standardized tests are to maintain an equal education level across the country and have that level increase to better compete against other nations across the globe. In order to compete with global averages, it was believed that standardized tests were the most effective way in increasing the United States average. Therefore, a country heavily adopted in testing students with these standardized tests should have a steady increase in educational levels throughout the years, yet results show a different story. As a matter of fact standardized tests have not shown a beneficial increase in test scores but rather a slow but steady decrease in scores for some students. With these results in mind,...
