The residents of waknuk are not able to accept newborns deviants and families that carry deviants. This to hear is very sad because it’s not the babies or families fault but they stay pay for it, aunt Harriet committed suicide in the book because she gave birth to a deviant and she knew what was the outcome of that so she asked asked her sister if they could switch babies so the inspector would accept the baby and be able to bring it home. Her sister don’t accept her offer and then she later called her a criminal. Aunt harriet was later found in the river died she committed suicide because of her baby. The waknuk people lost a member and a baby just because they lack in the ability to accept deviants. The waknuk people also don’t like to welcome
