Reading Response 1 After reading the title of the article Why it Hurts to be a Handsome Man on the Job Hunt, I was interested in the approach and results of the investigation. When reading the article I thought it was an interesting subject to study and take into account, because it isn’t something I would ever think could occur within the workplace. The common topics of workplace discussions are typically how women are discriminated against and harassed by men in the office. This new insight of another common discrimination within the workplace caught my attention.
My initial thought of the piece was that it had to be a rumor that was circulating within the workplace until I read the research was done by the University College London and the University of Maryland. I feel as though the research was legitimate in portraying workplace behaviors by having participants, or managers view pictures of both attractive and unattractive men to hire for their workplace. I thought the organization, wording, and length of the piece made it an easier read than most articles I have read previously. Since English is not my first language, I sometimes have trouble understanding parts of a piece. This article had a title for each section that described what it was talking about, used basic words that are understandable to most audiences and got right to the point.
This article provided interesting information on what managers are looking for in each type of work setting. It was found that it was more likely for an attractive man to be hired in a group workplace setting and an unattractive man to be hired in a competitive workplace. This information was useful to me because it can be applied to myself when I’m searching for a job. I also thought it was interesting that insecurity of managers determined who would be hired in the workplace. I didn’t think that the attractiveness

It was chilly that afternoon, with a little snow falling, and the snow as hard as salt particles. The wind had a hissing strength; it pounced on pedestrians and shook their overcoats and flapped their hat brims. Soldiers on the streets, and sailors in their winter-issue peajackets, blew steam on their fingers. The man with the red hat and the blue armband with the yellow cross was not used to the cold, or to the bite that winter has in New York, close to the sea. He cursed the weather fluently, with the slightly accented voice of a man who can speak several languages. His red hat and blue-yellow-cross armband, incidentally, was his own idea of a disguise. Dress in a bizarre outfit, he believed, and people wouldn't be able to recognize you when you dressed in ordinary clothes. He crossed Fifth Avenue and went into a restaurant, one of those white-enamel-and-chrome quick-eat places. “Mug one and save the cow,” he told the waiter. He grinned a little when he said that, for he liked to show his acquaintance with the local vernacular, in any part of the world where he happened to be. Soon after he got his coffee black another man came in. This fellow...

It's rather a mystery—" "What island is it?" Rainsford asked. "The old charts call it `Ship-Trap Island,"' Whitney replied." A suggestive name, isn't it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place. I don't know why. Some superstition—" "Can't see it," remarked Rainsford, trying to peer through the dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht. "You've good eyes," said Whitney, with a laugh," and I've seen you pick off a moose moving in the brown fall bush at four hundred yards, but even you can't see four miles or so through a moonless Caribbean night." "Nor four yards," admitted Rainsford. "Ugh! It's like moist black velvet." "It will be light enough in Rio," promised Whitney. "We should make it in a few days. ...Chapter 1The Son of Morningstar“Gina’s goin’ to ground me again.” I complained. Mike and I were out flying over town again. The Fallen had forbid me from socializing with Mike and forbid me from flying. Right now I’m breaking both rules and my Aunt Gina is going to murder me. But she hasn’t flown in years and can’t remember the sweet tranquility and since of freedom and pure joy you get from flying. It’s just too much for me to give upIt was well past one in the morning and Mike and I were out downtown again. We missed the Light Rail. Again. “No, Mike that's not the point, I don't care about groundings. The point is it's your fault but when you get me home she's going to melt and say, 'Thank you Michael for bringing my irresponsible nephew home,” I smirked, “I'm half tempted to tell her exactly how angelic you are.” He gave me a horrified look, “Luke, come on.” I laughed at my friend knowing I would never do such a thing. Mike's reaction was understandable. Mike was son of Michael the Archangel. I am Lucian Morningstar, son of the devil. Right now he's committing treason against his father and heaven. The penalty for treason is getting cast out of heaven depending on severity of the crime they could go as far as casting you here to earth as an immortal human bound in the weak (in our terms the human is the weakest form of life) human body the shock of it could send you spiraling into a coma and you will be a immortal vegetable. ...Induction task for AS English Language and Literature. Read through the opening section of ‘In Cold Blood” by Trueman Capote & annotate it as per the narrative aspects listed below. Then answer the following question in 4-500 words. How does the author use narrative aspects to tell the story in chapter one? * Narrative Voice * Dialogue * Setting * Events * Figurative language * Descriptive language * Character * Form & structure I. The Last to See Them Alive The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call "out there." Some seventy miles east of the Colorado border, the countryside, with its hard blue skies and desert-clear air, has an atmosphere that is rather more Far West than Middle West. The local accent is barbed with a prairie twang, a ranch-hand nasalness, and the men, many of them, wear narrow frontier trousers, Stetsons, and high-heeled boots with pointed toes. The land is flat, and the views are awesomely extensive; horses, herds of cattle, a white cluster of grain elevators rising as gracefully as Greek temples are visible long before a traveler reaches them. Holcomb, too, can be seen from great distances. Not that there's much to see - simply an aimless congregation of buildings divided in the center by the main-line tracks of the Santa Fe Rail-road, a haphazard hamlet bounded on the south by a brown stretch of the Arkansas (pronounced "Ar-kan-sas")...

Hamilton, 1997 Anita Blake, vampire hunter, is now herself a hunted woman. Who put the $500,000 price on her head--a man or a monster? It's not just her own skin she needs to save; the rivalry between her werewolf boyfriend, Richard, and Marcus, the other alpha werewolf in his pack, has come to full boil. And there's always Jean-Claude, the vampire who's been waiting for just the right moment to slip inside Anita's head and heart. 1 The most beautiful corpse I'd ever seen was sitting behind my desk. Jean-Claude's white shirt gleamed in the light from the desk lamp. A froth of lace spilled down the front, peeking from inside his black velvet jacket. I stood behind him, my back to the wall, arms crossed over my stomach, which put my right hand comfortably close to the Browning Hi-Power in its shoulder holster. I wasn't about to draw on Jean-Claude. It was the other vampire I was worried about. The desk lamp was the only light in the room. The vampire had requested the overheads be turned out. His name was Sabin, and he stood against the far wall, huddling in the dark. He was covered head to foot in a black, hooded cape. He looked like something out of an old Vincent Price movie. I'd never seen a real vampire dress like that. The last member of our happy little group was Dominic Dumare. He sat in one of the client chairs. He was...

...wood paneling laid over stone walls, thick even here in the heart of the Fortress of the Light. The single chair in the room heavy, high-backed, and almost a throne - was as invisible to him as the few scattered tables that completed the furnishings. Even the white-cloaked man kneeling with barely restrained eagerness on the great sunburst set in the wide planks of the floor had vanished from Niall's mind for the moment, though few would have dismissed him so lightly. Jaret Byar had been given time to wash before being brought to Niall, but both his helmet and his breastplate were dulled from travel and battered from use. Dark, deep-set eyes shone with a feverish, urgent light in a face that seemed to have had every spare scrap of flesh boiled away. He wore no sword - none was allowed in Niall's presence - but he seemed poised on the edge of violence, like a hound awaiting the loosing of the leash. Twin fires on long hearths at either end of the room held off the late winter cold. It was a plain, soldier's room, really, everything well made but nothing extravagant except for the sunburst. Furnishings came to the audience chamber of the Lord Captain Commander of the Children of the Light with the man who rose to the office; the flaring sun of coin gold had been worn smooth by generations of petitioners, replaced and worn smooth again. Gold enough to buy any estate in Amadicia, and the patent of nobility to go with it. For ten years Niall had walked across that gold ...

THESEUS Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour Draws on apace. Four happy days bring in Another moon. But oh, methinks how slow This old moon wanes! She lingers my desires, 5 Like to a stepdame or a dowager Long withering out a young man’s revenue. THESEUS Our wedding day is almost here, my beautiful Hippolyta. We’ll be getting married in four days, on the day of the new moon. But it seems to me that the days are passing too slowly—the old moon is taking too long to fade away! That old, slow moon is keeping me from getting what I want, just like an old widow makes her stepson wait to get his inheritance. HIPPOLYTA Four days will quickly steep themselves in night. Four nights will quickly dream away the time. And then the moon, like to a silver bow 10 New bent in heaven, shall behold the night Of our solemnities. Finally the new moon, curved like a silver bow in the sky, will look down on our wedding celebration. THESEUS Go, Philostrate, Stir up the Athenian youth to merriments. How could she not recognise Ethan Black? Big. Dark. Forceful. Arrogant. Magnetically attractive. Still … Mia drew in a deep breath, chin tilting in challenge as she took in everything about him. It had been five years since she last saw Ethan, and his hair was still as dark as night, although it was styled much shorter than it used to be. Expertly so. His face was just as male-model handsome: wide, intelligent brow, penetrating grey eyes, sculptured cheekbones either side of a long straight nose, and a wickedly sinful mouth above a square and determined jaw. The judge, a formidably heavy-featured man, rolled up the sleeves of his black robe as if to physically chastise the two young men standing before the bench. His face was cold with majestic contempt. But there was something false in all this that Amerigo Bonasera sensed but did not yet understand. “You acted like the worst kind of degenerates,” the judge said harshly. Yes, yes, thought Amerigo Bonasera. Animals. Animals. The two young men, glossy hair crew cut, scrubbed clean-cut faces composed into humble contrition, bowed their heads in submission. The judge went on. “You acted like wild beasts in a jungle and you are fortunate you did not sexually molest that poor girl or I’d put you behind bars for twenty years.” The judge paused, his eyes beneath impressively thick brows flickered slyly toward the sallow-faced Amerigo Bonasera, then lowered to a stack of probation reports...
