...Plastic bags are distributed everywhere, from grocery to book stores. These bags have been used since the early 1850’s. One trillion plastic bags are produced each year, yet billions of these bags have ended up in landfills or on the streets and in the ocean. They are wasteful, destructive, and uneconomical. Plastic bags should be banned to protect ourselves and our environment. To begin, plastic bags are dangerous to children and wildlife. Every year, 25 children in America die due to suffocation from these bags. Likewise, many animals have died from plastic bags as well. Some bags float into the ocean and resemble jelly fish. Then, the bags enter the animal’s digestive system. In addition, the bags litter the streets and producing them pollutes the air. Many cities, including San Francisco and Seattle, have already banned plastic bags. However, plastic bags should be banned everywhere to help our children, animals, and environment. Furthermore, plastic bags waste numerous resources. They are made from a non-renewable source, petroleum. 12 million barrels of oil are used to produce these bags in the United States. In addition, fabric-made bags can be used numerous times, so factories do not have to produce as many. We are wasting many non-renewable sources by producing plastic bags instead of fabric bags. Banning plastic bags would save many of these sources for other products. Also, living without plastic bags would save numerous amounts of money. So why waste money...

...Plastic Bags Don’t Suit You: A campaign to reduce plastic bag use Plastic bags, invented in the 1930s, were first introduced to super markets in 1977. In the following decades, they have spread all over the world. Currently, almost 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide every year (Warner, 2010). This waste can be considered as a symbol of consumerism. Meanwhile, it’s also the evidence of our ignoring the environment. In the past half century, efforts have been made to reduce or even eliminate the use of plastic bags. Until now, the global use of plastic bags has been on the rise, according to The Culvert Chronicles (2011). That’s why this national campaign needs to be launched. It’s time to declare a war against the plastic bags. And with the assistance of multiple cognitive theories, it’s not hard to win this war. Harm of massive plastic bag use Plastic bags are usually made from oil. In the US alone, an estimate that about 12 million barrels of oil were needed to meet the US citizens’ needs of 100 billion plastic bags in the year 2001 (Jenkins, 2011). And if we think about the global situation, the oil consumption resulted from modern society’s addiction to single-use plastic bags can be a major contributor to global warming (Khoo, H.H., & Tan, R.B.H., 2010). Moreover, oil is not renewable, and our attempts of finding new alternative energy haven’t been proved effective so far. Both manufacturing and recycling plastic bags generates toxic gases, like compounds of...

...Plastic has become pretty much a lifestyle here in America; We use plastic cards to make transactions every day, we’re given plastic bowls and utensils with our lunch and we collect a countless number of plastic bags from our local stores daily. These days, there is so much hoopla about banning these convenient little bags that many of us love. Opposers of these bags claim (or were misled to think) that they are not environmentally responsible. Before we take on a war against these plastic bags with hopes of saving the world one bag at a time, as citizens we should get the facts into perspective about alternatives being advertised before making earth saving decisions. Also, what happened to being presented with choices and choosing the ones we find to be more responsible? Regularly, you may hear critics stating that yearly a billion bags are not recycled and filling up our landfills. This is in fact true. Plastic bags take . To remedy this problem, has anyone ever asked the question as to why we don’t just find a way to recycle the bags with all the technology available these days? Matter of fact, the truth is that these bags are already recyclable! Plastic bags can be recycled into things like plastic wood which can be used to make backyard decking components, shopping crates, park benches or even more plastic bags. The EPA reported that only 1% of these bags are being recycled? As responsible citizens we should all get together to push for new laws that encourage...

...re-evaluate their shopping experience, as Austin will be going bagless beginning March 1, 2013. All consumers use plastic or paper bags on a regular basis, whether while retail shopping or grocery shopping. That’s all about to change, however; the passage of this new law means that those paper and plastic bags are on the way out. Single-use bag use will be diminished, re-usable bags are headed to the forefront, and shoppers will be getting used to a new experience when the head to their local grocery early next year. BACKGROUND According to a city report released this year, “Austinities use 263 million plastic bags a year – that’s more than 330 bags a year for every resident. It costs the city – meaning it costs us the taxpayers – about $850,000 a year to dispose of plastic bags.”(Lisheron, 2012) Consumers in Austin have already started to get a taste of what is to come. Companies, such as Walgreens, have implemented a trial test on stores to gauge the impact of the law being passed. Candace White, an avid shopper at the Slaughter and South Congress Walgreens, was quite confused when the cashier thanked her for coming but did not place her products in a plastic bag. The cashier informed her about Austin going bagless and she was given a free recycled bag. Like most Austinities, she was not informed of the new law which is soon to be enforced. This paper will reinforce the reasons why going bagless is good for all involved parties. To better understand the effect of this ban on our community...

...Plastic bags are very popular in our life. Everyday, plastic bags are used for variation purposes because plastic bags are convenient, as they are waterproof, light and inexpensive compared to other kinds of bags. Nevertheless, the using without control makes the quantity of plastic waste becoming alarming and can lead to a serious environmental hazard. This is the reason why the plastic bag is one of elements contributing to environmental damage especially the marine environment. Ocean polluted by plastic bags is the result of human awareness. People use plastic bags all the time, however, they just do not concern about what happens to the millions of plastic bags which they throw away. Although plastic waste can go to landfill but it still stay for long period of time. Because of their light weights and difficulties in containing, plastic bags fly easily in wind, float along readily in the currents of rivers and oceans. Ocean polluted by plastic bags is often also the result of human laziness. People go to the beach with lots of plastic bags of essential items or food, afterwards, they hardly collect bags and simply allow the bag to disappear into the wind and waves (Harrison, 2014). Consequently, millions tonnes of plastic bags is dumped into the world’s oceans per year. However, plastic bags are not easily disappear in the water because most plastic bags take up to 1,000 years to degrade on land and 450 years in water (BBC news, 2002). ...The Effects of Plastic Bags on Environmentt * | * The effects of plastic bags on the environment are really quite devastating. While there are many objections to the banning of plastic bags based solely on their convenience, the damage to the environment needs to be controlled. * There is no way to strictly limit the effects of plastic bags on the environment because there is no disposal method that will really help eliminate the problem. While reusing them is the first step, most people either don't or can't based on store policies. They are not durable enough to stand up to numerous trips to the store so often the best that citizens can do is reuse them when following pooper scooper laws. * The biggest problem with this is that once they have been soiled the end up in the trash, which then ends up in the landfill or burned. Either solution is very poor for the environment. Burning emits toxic gases that harm the atmosphere and increase the level of VOCs in the air while landfills hold them indefinitely as part of the plastic waste problem throughout the globe. * Plastic Bag Litter * Even when citizens try to manage their plastic bag disposal wind plays a role in carrying them away as litter. This litter is not biodegradable and thus where it lands it tends to stay for long period of time. A bag that is eventually ripped to shreds from high winds or other factors doesn't disappear but instead is spread in smaller amounts throughout the area. This can cause...

...Act to phase out the use of single use plastic shopping bags LD 325 An Act to phase out the use of single use plastic shopping bags One hundred and sixty thousand plastic bags are used globally every second of every day. China, a country of 1.3 billion, consumes three billion plastic bags daily, or one trillion ninety five billion per year, according to China Trade News. (Plastics News) In 1965, Celloplast came up with the design on which all modern plastic shopping bags are based: a tube of plastic sealed at the bottom to allow for the packaging of goods, an open top to insert such items into the bag and handles for convenient carrying. This bag is commonly known as the T-shirt bag or single use plastic shopping bag. By the end of 1985, 75% of U.S. grocery stores carried plastic bags in addition to paper ones, and today, plastic bags have secured more than 80% of the grocery and convenience store market. When Exxon Mobile introduced these bags to the U.S. in the late 1970’s they were immediately met with controversy. Not only were people worried about the environmental impact of the plastic, but suburban shoppers preferred paper bags that would stand upright in the trunks of their cars, while city folk liked the handles on the plastic bags to carry on their walk home. Plastic bags won the minds and hearts of business owners worried about their bottom line. (Petru) Plastic bags are much cheaper to purchase than paper by up to 4 times. The plastic is also waterproof and...

...UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA CRITICAL THINKING CBEB1108 PLASTIC BAG SHOULD BE BANNED WHAT IS PLASTIC BAG? Plastic bag is used to carry item especially from store to home. Most of the time plastic bag is used for storage and trash in common. Plastics are made from non-renewable natural resources such as crude oil, gas and coal. IMPACT The impact of plastic bags on the environment is enormous. As of August 2010, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are being used each year worldwide. Approximately 100,000 sea turtles and other marine animals die every year because they either mistake the bags for food or get strangled in them, says Natural Environment. In Australia, 50 million garbage bags end up as litter yearly, and the "plastic soup" patch floating in the Pacific Ocean is twice the size of the continental United States. It is roughly 80 percent plastic, according to The Independent, a British newspaper. What exactly the impact of reusable bag usage in the U.S. is far from clear. Even though, according to the website Earth 911, reusing or recycling one ton of plastic means the equivalent of 11 barrels of oil are saved. ALTERNATIVE As we can see nowadays grocery chain carries cheap reusable grocery bags and more upscale bags are available in practically all chain stores. In addition, many people sew their own from leftover fabric or by converting old jeans or beach towels into personalized carry-on bags, which is fun and creative way to recycle. POTENTIAL ...

...Green Marketing By Susan Ward, About.com Guide See More About: What is green marketing? Green marketing refers to the process of selling products and/or services based on their environmental benefits. Such a product or service may be environmentally friendly in itself or produced and/or packaged in an environmentally friendly way. The obvious assumption of green marketing is that potential consumers will view a product or service's "greenness" as a benefit and base their buying decision accordingly. The not-so-obvious assumption of green marketing is that consumers will be willing to pay more for green products than they would for a less-green comparable alternative product - an assumption that, in my opinion, has not been proven conclusively. While green marketing is growing greatly as increasing numbers of consumers are willing to back their environmental consciousnesses with their dollars, it can be dangerous. The public tends to be skeptical of green claims to begin with and companies can seriously damage their brands and their sales if a green claim is discovered to be false or contradicted by a company's other products or practices. Presenting a product or service as green when it's not is called greenwashing. 3 Keys to Successful Green Marketing Green Marketing Can Win More Customers If You Do It Right By Susan Ward, About.com Guide See More About: ; be genuine, educate your customers, and give them the opportunity to participate. 1) Being genuine means that ...

...is the use of plastic bags at stores. Plastic bags have recently become a hot topic when it comes to conserving the environment. Millions of plastic bags are used on a daily basis. Stores have begun selling cloth and cold food reusable bags to cut down on the use of plastic bags. Stores like Wal-Mart have installed recycling bins as you enter the store hoping that people will recycle the plastic bags, I found this to be very interesting. The stores have definitely gone out of their way to help conserve our environment. I am not sure why they have suddenly become so aware of the environment, but I am sure it has to do with the fact that in the past few years society has become more aware of issues that affect the environment. Environmental ethics definitely play a role. The stores are still allowing people to make their own choice between plastic or something more environmentally friendly, but they have taken major steps in helping conserve our environment. Many stores have never offered such options and I believe that this has the potential to make a significant difference when it comes to the environment. Texas has passed a new law that will go into effect as of January 2013 that the stores here will no longer be using plastic or paper bags. We have to buy reusable cloth bags from now on. I have been storing my plastic bags and reusing them until they brake and holding on to the two cloth bags we have gotten so far, but I know I will have to buy or make some more bags...
