According to Pinto (2010), leadership is less about administration and focuses on interpersonal relationships. Leaders inspire, motivate, influence, and change behaviors of others to achieve a common goal. Leaders involve in an awareness of a partnership, an active collaboration between the leader and the team (Pinto, 2010, p. 109). It is critical in project management to note the idea of leadership as a partnership because it stresses on an important manner in which all leaders are ultimately dependent upon their teams to achieve project goals (Pinto, 2010, p.109). To promote the idea between the project manager and the team, there are four things necessary.- exchange of purpose, a right to say no, joint accountability, and absolute honesty. Success is contagious. Stepping up and being a leader, the leader, the team, and the entire organization. Leadership begets success and success is contagious. Peers mimic the victories.
Effective communication allows all team members to be engaged and follow the four guidelines from the exchange of purpose to absolute honesty. A way of communicating may be through meetings. Specific outcomes are both task-oriented behavior and group maintenance. Group maintenance behavior consists of supportive activities including showing confidence and trust, acting friendly and supportive, working with subordinates to understand their problems, and recognizing their accomplishments (Pinto, 2010, p. 113). Projects are done by people and most projects are done for people. Where a project fails to understand who their stakeholders are, or fails to engage and communicate with them effectively, the project is working in a vacuum. Similarly, if the team themselves are not collaborating effectively individuals can end up working in silos that prevent communications flowing effectively. Other team issues that may cause a project to fail include:

Software Project Failure and Solutions

...Software Project Failure and Solutions According to Krigsman, (2007) business-critical and services project are not completed on time, cost too much, contain a lot of defects and fail to satisfy the business requirements they set out to achieve. Clancy, (1995) states that United States spend more than $250 billion each year on approximately 175,000 IT development project of which most will fail and that software development projects are in chaos. This paper aim to explain the reason why a significant amount of software projects fail and what make software projects succeed by reviewing evidence from a few reports and surveys. Research conducted by Standish Group in 1995, shows that 31.1% of project will fail before they are completed and 52% of project will cost 189% of their original cost. On average only 16.2% of software projects are finish on time and on-budget and 9% of software projects are finish on time within budget for large companies. Similarly failure figures for project failure due to restarts, cost overruns, tie overruns were disheartening and to make things worst nothing change since then (Clancy, 1995). The Standish Group survey of IT executive manager reveals that user involvement, executive management support and clear statement of requirements are the three major reasons why project succeed. Incomplete requirements and lack of user involvement are the main opinion why projects are impaired, eventually cancelled and hence fail. Table 1: Some of...

Business Research Decisions

...guaranteed. Organizations desiring success will study team failures within the organization for the health of future projects. Analyzing failure is important because it affects employee morale and also has financial implications (Team, 2013). There are five major categories attributed to team failure. In this paper we will examine and discuss the five categories identified as environmental influences, goals, roles, processes, and relationships. Failure in any or all of these categories leads to failure of the organization as a whole (Team, 2013). The hierarchy of business decision makers categorizes organizations based on how they use business research to make decisions. List and explain the three levels in the hierarchy.  Environmental influences can be described as external factors such as team members working in different locations or teams having to straddle different time zones making it difficult to communication quickly and effectively(Team, 2013.) In the world of today’s communication options, this could be remedied by using Skype® or instant messaging, along with Google Docs® for group efforts. Communication is the most important part of successful teams. Another environmental influence is that a team may not be given sufficient resources to do the job. A team that does not have the necessary resources to take on a project will most likely fail – this can be fixed easily but understanding what is needed and providing it without reservation. Team efforts need...

It Project Implementation Failures

...IT Project Implementation Failures The most common reason why IT projects are unsuccessful is because they do not meet the criteria, this includes: Is the project being delivered in the proper time frame set up, is the project over budget or under the budget set, and does the system work efficiently? There are very few projects that can successfully meet all three levels of the criteria all at once. There are several studies as to why the projects fail and some of the more common reason found are: I. Little User engagement- which has been identified as dangerous to several projects. Without proper usage on the daily basis, no one is truly committed to the new system. In order for any project to do, well management and employees should participate through the entire process. Time and effort has to be given by everyone because a new system is being implemented to a staff that is already busy. Management has to be responsible to keep supporting the project and make it a concise and clear that it is a priority. II. Unrealistic time scales- There are times where it can take a long time to establish a new procedure that the product that it was made to improve is no longer operational by the company. The way to elevate this is to make the time scale smaller for the project. The projects needs to be reviewed to ensure that the time scale is realistic so false expectation can be avoided. III. Uncontrolled changes in the scope- By ensuring that all the necessary components...

Business 4.4

...Inc. asks a research company to study job satisfaction in the corporation. What are some of the important reasons that this research project may fail to make an adequate contribution to the solution of management problems? There are a few reasons why this research may fail to make a substantial contribution to the solution of the problem. One reason revolves around the favored-technique syndrome. Researchers sometimes worry too much about technique, and not enough about what will be studied and how it will be studied (Cooper & Schindler, 2011, pg. 91). The president of Oaks International Inc. must not let the researcher use a technique that was designed for a different client (Cooper & Schindler, 2011, pg. 91). Even though the technique may have been successful in the past, this technique may not be suitable for this study. Another factor that will make the research project inadequate is the research company using old information that has already been collected on Oaks International Inc. The old information that has been compiled was created for a precise reason, which may or may not have to do with the job satisfaction. Mining old data is a good starting point, but rarely will this information be sufficient enough to answer all of the questions needed (Cooper & Schindler, 2011, pg. 92). An additional aspect why this research project may not make a contribution is because there are questions that cannot be researched. In this scenario, what if the individuals of...

...1) Who should ThoughtWorks’ primary target audience be? Why? PRIMARY TARGET AUDIENCE IT project-managers with direct responsibility over the success of large-scale systems integration projects which are facing a compelling event, such as having no margin for error, being very complex or at-risk of failure. RATIONALE FOR TARGET AUDIENCE These IT project-managers are referred to as “buyers or “heavy influencers” in the case, though they may be managers, CIOs, or technical decision makers. The systems integration projects these IT heavy influencers manage can be either custom applications or a combination of that and package software implementation. These projects feature a compelling event – such as having no margin for error or having already experienced problems in finishing it – and thus they require an IT consultant that can successfully complete the project regardless of extenuating circumstances. In the context of Gartner’s segmentation of IT enterprise types (ThoughtWorks A, pg. 8), these heavy influencers would come primarily from Type A organizations, though they could also be from Type B, so long as they embrace using advanced, innovative technology. This target audience of IT heavy influencers is ideal for ThoughtWorks because – The presence of a compelling event was a consistent factor among nearly all of ThoughtWorks’ major projects to date, regardless of other factors – such as the awareness about Agile or Martin Fowler. These major clients chose...

...Describe how the development of integrated healthcare systems has created an impetus for installing computer networks. Glandon, Smaltz and Slovensky (2010) stated that integrated healthcare systems helped create the impetus for installing computer networks because information housed in one system may be “ incompatible with the data format” of information stored in another system. Information technology has an important and expanding role in the delivery of high quality healthcare services. Until recently health informatics systems have generally been developed as independent centralized databases. With computing communications technologies now being introduced into major hospitals, many new information services can now be provided to enhance the patient-care provider interaction. The main applications are the office suit and web-browsers. Most companies are moving toward web interface applications and internet explorer is the front runner for testing purposes. NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR IT Based on the past track record, public-sector informational system project failures are so common that it almost expected by the planners. It is estimated that around 20–30 percent of projects are total failures and abandoned. Around 30–60 percent partially fails, with time and cost overruns or other problems. The minority of projects succeed. To give a general idea of this situation, we can compare it with NHS National Programme for Information Technology (NpfIT). It is the largest civil IT programme which aims at providing opportunities for the IT service industry to develop business models in the UK healthcare sector. It launched...

Why Software Fails

...WHY SOFTWARE FAILS: QUALITY IMPLEMENTATION AND TESTING Background The resource I have chosen for this Library assignment is “Why software fails: Quality implementation and testing”. The author provides a look into the main factors for a system failure and the goals and the importance of testing in a SDLC process. The authors of this article are Heather Taylor, Heather and Stephens, Charlotte. Executive Summary Information systems projects frequently fail and it’s a reality that is often not talked out. When undertaking a large, complex, systems project, the realistic expectation should be that the there will be complication with the production of the software. In particular, business process reengineering (BPR) projects have an even higher failure rate because of their expanded scope. Hiring a large, established consulting company is no guarantee of success; neither is buying packaged software and implementing it. Projects are frequently built using a strategy that almost guarantees failure. Software engineering is a kind of engineering. With this in mind, “the industry has become serious about adopting various standards, process improvements, and "silver bullet" tools. However, in spite of the growing trend toward process improvement and Total Quality Management (TQM) for software many companies are finding themselves without the quality and productivity improvements they were hoping to gain”. The author portrays testing as the most important factor in a quality...

The project itself is an effort to restore flows to the San Joaquin River from Friant Dam to the confluence of Merced River. I believe Bill McEwen’s, author of the “River plan to fishy for my taste buds” article, experience prove him to be the better expert because he’s a veteran journalist who speaks for people in many of his published works and also works for a democrat which makes him more trustworthy on his environmental points. Case Study: River Too Fishy For My Taste Buds

...The San Joaquin River Project. I choose the, River Too Fishy for My Taste Buds because it perfectly explains why we should not have a river. I believe that Bill McEwen proves him the better expert because he explains how in the future we could have problems and how farmers need to learn how to compromise. River Plan Too Fishy for my Taste Buds was published in Fresno Bee, March 26, 2009. It talks about how the river will have problems in the future and how it’s possible for it to dry up and kill all the salmon so not only is it a waste of time but also of money. I believe that the SJRP is a waste of money especially $400. Several experts and famous institutions say it’s success, it’s impossible. Numerous studies prove this project will fail...
