Students these days go to school at least 990 hours in a year, why should we be forced to go for more? The big argument right now is that the school year should either have more days or we should increase the number of hours in a day. Some schools across the United States have already followed through with this idea. But why do people think this is a good idea? The main fight for longer school time is that it would help the U.S. improve their academic standings compared to other countries across the world. Students in the U.S. already spend about 30% less time in schools than other industrialized nations and could be lagging behind in global competitions. However, a longer school day or year would cost lots more money, cause students to become less focused and shorten students free time. …show more content…
For example, an extended school year for one student in Massachusetts schools costs around $1,300 just for that one student. Also, schools are already facing huge budget cuts and at the moment schools can simply not afford to pay for the teachers and staff members to work extra hours. Fifty public schools in Chicago made their days longer and about ten million dollars were spent to do that. However, schools did receive $150,000 to use on the employees for the extra time. So the predicted cost of all the schools in the district to extend their time is $84 million. To add to that, a 10% increase in school time would mean a 6-7% in schools budgets which instead could be put towards extracurricular activities and other

Four Day School Week Research Paper

...the school on the Four-Day school week, ”the schools with shorter weeks still kept the kids in class for the same number of hours”,because of the traditional Five-Day week, which means longer hours in the classroom. So what will be better? Four-Day or Five-Day school week? The problem is that schools think that the four-day week would be better for the kids because school districts looking to save time and money have switched to four-day weeks. That"'s why other school districts are changing to the Four-Day week. Because they thought it would help the kids. When the schools with shorter weeks thought it would make the school week better for the kids, though some people believe that the four-day school week is worse. Should School Start Later In School?

...Should school start an hour later than usual? We know that we as students should have time to get some sleep and eat breakfast. Some people think that school should start at 7:30 AM. There are many reasons why school should start at 8:30 AM. Some reasons are that teens go through puberty, and they play sports or go to airborne (a teenager’s event) at the church. Puberty may biologically wire teens to stay up late and wake up late. Puberty doesn’t change how much sleep they need, but it makes it easier for them to stay awake longer. To let us get a hour break it would help. To let school start an hour later it will increase attendance, fewer students sleeping in class and less self-reported depression. Communities and school districts really...

Shorter School Days Research

...Shorter School Days Beep, beep, beep. It’s 6 am, time to wake up for school! Do you like waking up at 6am to go to school? How about not getting enough sleep every night? Are you tired of being tired all day, everyday because of school? Having shorter school days would improve grades and improve attitudes in the mornings. Studies show minds don’t start up until about 9 am. So why should we start school so early? Children between the ages of 12 to 18 need about eight hours of sleep each night and sometimes even nine. From research, only about 8 percent of teens report optimal sleep, and 69 percent report insufficient sleep. “I’ve gone through bouts of depression’ from too much homework”, another student says. Most teens get assigned 17.5 hours...

School Later

...weekday, high school students are waking up around six o'clock in the morning to get ready for school, some even earlier. It's not practical for high school classes to start at 7:44. It's just too early for teenage minds to function properly. Our school should start at least an hour later than that. With the extra hour, our attendance would improve, as well as our grades and attitudes. The facts are all there, so why shouldn't the hours change? For the 1997-1998 school year, the University of Minnesota conducted a study on Minneapolis high schools. Their starting times were changed from 7:15 to 8:40. The results of this change were obvious. Teachers reported that students were more alert during the first two periods of the day and that attendance improved by five percent. After such a revealing study, why aren't more schools catching on? It's a proven fact that teenagers need between 8 ½ and nine hours of sleep each night. It's also a proven fact that only fifteen percent of teenagers get the sleep that they need. Can you believe that more than twenty-five percent of teenagers sleep less than seven hours a night? Are you one of those teenagers? Well, part of the reason why this is happening is because school starts so early in the morning. If school hours were changed, teenagers would be much healthier and feel better about themselves. Furthermore, school officials are always complaining that so many of their students are constantly tardy to school. They even have a policy in...

School Should Start Later

...Why We Need More Sleep Don't you hate waking up early in the morning? Almost every weekday, high school students are waking up around six o'clock in the morning to get ready for school, some even earlier. It's not practical for high school classes to start at 7:44. It's just too early for teenage minds to function properly. Our school should start at least an hour later than that. With the extra hour, our attendance would improve, as well as our grades and attitudes. The facts are all there, so why shouldn't the hours change? On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. That way they get their work done and get enough sleep because without much sleep students will not be getting high grades. A health survey that the University Health Center administered showed them that one in four students say that lack of sleep has affected their academic performance in a bad way (“Sleep Rocks”). Sleep deprivation impairs students’ ability to be alert, pay attention, solve problems, cope with stress, and retain information. Academic performances on...

Why High School Should Start Later

...and Your Grades Will Be Greater High school is a part of every teenager’s life whether they like it or not. Although it is not a requirement; most, if not all, teenagers will experience at least one year of high school. With the experience of high school, students will also go through waking up early sometimes at five or six a.m. The starting time of high schools has been highly debated for several years. Those who debate this topic usually dispute on whether or not changing the time would be beneficial. Psychologists estimate that as many as 30% of children may have a sleep disorder at some point during childhood. Sleep disorders have implications both for social-emotional adjustment and for school performance. For this reason it is important for both parents and educators to understand how sleep works and how disruptions in normal sleep patterns can affect children and teenagers. Starting school just a half an hour later would benefit the most families and students, and also to accommodate for teens' sleep needs. One of the main beneficial topics to argue for starting school later is attendance. Schools should start later because it is proven that students will have higher attendance. If students can get more sleep, they are more likely to attend school on a regular basis. Studies have shown that after puberty, teenagers require more sleep, around nine and a half hours, and are getting less than needed, around seven hours. Mary Carskadon of Brown University performed...

Will a Longer School Year Help or Hurt Us Students

...Will Longer School Year Help or Hurt US Students In the article, “Will Longer School Year Help or Hurt US Students” by Julie Carr Smyth it questions whether or not having a longer school year would be beneficial to students. It highlights the option of continuing school all year long and adding three equal vacations in each third of the year, centered around holidays. I believe that this idea would be smart and that it should be put into place. The first reason why I believe that having a year round school schedule would be beneficial is because it would give the students less time to forget the material they had been studying the grade before. The article states, “Proponents argue that too much knowledge is lost while American kids wile away the summer months apart from their lessons” (Smyth n.p). It has even been tested that student’s test scores are high at the beginning of the school year opposed to at the end before school starts back up, and that only 10-15% of the student body did not lose any knowledge. That means that a whopping 85-90% of the student body did lose knowledge over the summer months. The second reason why a system like this would work is because it would give lower class children a chance to get free school lunches year-round. Smyth states, “Supporters also say a longer school year would give poor children more access to school-provided healthy meals” (Smyth n.p). During the school year some children’s most filling and healthiest meal is...

Coming To School Research Paper

...Have you ever talked to someone who said they actually enjoyed school? If you were to ask me that question, I would have to say not very many students said yes. This is because school isn't the place where most kids go to have a great time. You see all your friends and you get to hangout with them all day, but the work that comes along with it isn't always as enjoyable as your friends. This has come to the point where kids really don't want to go to school at all, so they're always in a bad mood when they're there. Have you ever asked yourself, "What could be done to make school a better place to go?" Well I have, and I have come up with a couple good solutions to this problem. Coming to school with a positive attitude for the day could be...

Working Student

...INTRODUCTION Many students of HRM in Taguig City University work part-time Employment during school could improve grades if working promotes aspects that correspond with academic success, such as industriousness or time management skills, or instead reduce grades by reducing time and energy available for school work. Otherwise, working might be associated with academic performance, yet not directly influence it, if unobserved student differences influence both labor supply and grades. Unmotivated students might neither work for pay nor receive good grades because they put little effort into the labor market or school. In contrast, HRM students uninterested in academics might work long hours that would otherwise have been devoted to leisure. Students might misjudge the link between college achievement and future earnings when making labor supply decisions. If so, obtaining a consistent estimate of how such decisions affect academic performance is prospectively important for policy consideration. Some of HRM students in Taguig City University Students are more likely to work than they are to live on campus, to study full time, to attend a four-year college or university, or to apply for or receive financial aid. Students work regardless of the type of institution they attend, their age or family responsibilities, or even their family income or educational and living expenses. Limiting Homework

...gives you something to take home to think about besides homework.” Actress Lily Tomlin is correct. When students get home after a six-hour school day they are often overwhelmed with outrageous amounts of homework. This extra and sometimes unnecessary burden adds only anxiety to the average student leaving them a slave to their homework. This is a problem that can be alleviated with time and patience. Students are not happy with their current homework loads. Sixty-one percent of students in a recent survey concluded that they had to drop out of an activity because of their school workload (Galloway et al 2013). Obviously, homework affects students’ lives more than it should. It is not just something that a student would just finish in five to ten minutes. It takes hard work and brain dedication to finish homework at the time that it is required. One of the reasons that homework should be banned is because it is...

Do you ever not want to go to school on monday because you haven’t had a enough time to get your homework over the weekend and you are worried you're going to get in trouble? A four day week is necessary for our children because the statistics show if we have a four day week they will achieve better results academically, better attendance, kids need more family time and students will have more time to complete their homework they didn’t get done. A four day week is needed in our country because the other countries have the statistics that supports them changing it. One reason people think Australia should change school to a four day week is in America about 100 schools use the four day system and 67% of 2,700 students prefer this system. People did research on this topic and they found that on average math scores increased by...

No because teenagers have jobs in the afternoon when they get out of school and teenagers don't want to be late for there job. Some people have kids they have to go pick up after school at a certain time of the day. If we go to school later in the day it will be so many hours we have to stay in school, people probably tired and have stuff to do after school. Teenagers have practices for sports or any type of activities in school and they have to be there a certain time. In my opinion classes shouldn't start later or end later of the because it will stressful to get things done in the day. Mostly, teenagers that are in high school have jobs...
