...Assignment 1 “Why college education is important to me” Achieving Academic Excellence February 6th, 2014 The purpose of this essay is to show the importance of a college education and to provide many reasons why a college education would be important to me. I will incorporate a few quoted references along with some statistical data and my personal opinion. About twenty years ago I couldn’t give an answer to “why college is important to me”. I did enroll in a college and lasted about three semesters. I didn’t do well in many of my classes because I had poor study habits, lacked maturity, was never really focused, and just didn’t have any real motivation and goals set for myself. I never really gave it much thought. The point is I just didn’t take advantage of what college would mean to me and to my future. I wanted to enter the work force right away because I thought that I could land a good job without a college education. After fifteen years of doing different jobs and not making enough money to support a family on my own, I was finally at a crossroads. What am I going to do with my life? Do I continue to struggle? Those were really good questions. I realized that it wasn’t possible to land good jobs without better knowledge and the only way possible is to go back to school. I did some soul searching and came to the conclusion that if I am going to achieve something in this life and qualify for many positions then I must go back to college and work very hard for a degree...

...People often scoff at the idea that going to college will make you more money in the long run. But according to Robert Feldman “on average college graduates earn around 75 percent more than high school graduates over their working lifetimes.” That could mean up to a million dollars more than someone with only a high school degree. Although the money is a perk, “almost three-quarters of first year students say they want to learn about things that interest them.” Robert Feldman said when he took poll in 2014 about why people say they attend college. I love to say, “Education is like an onion.” You will have to get through one to be able to get to the other. There are many layers of education and each has their own benefit, consider these other reasons. One benefit of college is the ability to adapt. Adapt to new learning, new experiences and new people. They are always sporadically adding and changing the meaning of words and college helps keep you up to date. You meet a bunch of new people when you attend any new school. Meeting new people will help you learn about the world. “Education improves your ability to understand the world – to understand the world as it is now, and to prepare yourself to understand it as it will be” Robert Feldman quoted in his article “Why Go To College.”...

...school basketball players think this rule is also unfair. They think this rule is unjust because college is not necessary for professional basketball players. Going to college and playing college basketball can be very helpful to the league, but it is not necessary. It is not guaranteed that you will be a well skilled player, or quite possibly a better player, if you go to college for one or more years instead of coming directly out of high school. Many National Basketball Association legends and future legends have bypassed college and has or is having a very successful and tenured career. LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard, and Kobe Bryant are just a few high school phenoms who turned professional and had sensational careers. Turning professional directly out of high school is a great idea, but it is also very controversial. Remember when Taylor Swift moved to Nashville at the age of fourteen to become a country music star and everyone ridiculed her and her parents for the...

...Is the importance of a college education for a lifetime of knowledge, a career, or a directional map of the path for your life? A college education is all of these choices and then some. My choice to gain an education is for the establishment of a professional, personal, and financial foundation. My success also depends on this decision. Success is measured differently for each individual, but for me it’s measured by the opportunities afforded through receiving an education. In today’s economy, knowledge is not something I decided to have; I found it as being something that is essential to gain. According to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, between 1980 and 2005 “young adults with at least a bachelor’s degree consistently had higher median earnings than those with less education” (Kirstina). Obtaining knowledge through a college education is of utmost importance to me. I will be the first in my family to graduate college with degree of knowledge. Knowledge is so vast that there is no exact definition to define it. The definition of knowledge for me, is acquiring information and skills to prepare me for life’s obstacles. One of life’s greatest obstacles that knowledge renders you for, is success in a profession or trade. “The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts net job growth of almost 3 million health care jobs in the decade ending in 2029, a 29 percent increase over other groups” (Katherine). In the health care...

...Those who are successful are not those who avoid making mistakes, but those who learn from the mistakes they do make. Throughout the course of our lives, we must learn to have the wisdom and humility to recognize when we have made a mistake and the drive to act on that mistake by learning from it. I believe that one of the reasons that college is so important is that it gives us students an environment where we can make mistakes and learn from them. The mistake I made that weekend was a pretty serious one. I violated Georgia state law and the code of student conduct for Oglethorpe University. According to criminaldefenselawyer.com, “The State of Georgia has minor in possession (MIP) laws to prevent anyone under the age of 21 to consume or possess alcoholic beverages. These laws seek to discourage minors from drinking and...

...Time waits for no one, and college is charging at me faster than I anticipated. Now, if I do not plan for the future, I may not be prepared to go to my college. A school known for its diversity of class programs, Texas Tech University, home of the Red Raiders, shall grant me the opportunity to obtain my future career. The struggle is hard enough looking for my career, but the requirements to enter are quite hefty too. Not only is there a $75 fee waiver just to register there is also the required grade on two tests (TTU). One is the ACT the other is the SAT and from both of these there is a required grade needed to be made based on class rank. The extraordinary part is that from this point on the requirements, ease down and consists of simple things like official transcripts and a higher GPA than a 3.00 (TTU)....

...President Barack Obama stated “Higher Education cannot be a luxury; it is an economic imperative that every family in America should be afforded”. Based on today’s society college education is a very significant stepping stone ensuring a better life and various career prospects in our economy. College is therefore, important to me as it allows personal growth, by enhancing my knowledge. Which has open doors to opportunities, I would not have otherwise. More importantly, college is important to me not only to make myself proud but to be a role model to my children. To show them that despite what obstacles stand in a person’s way, they should never give up. Being a young, single minority mother with two children and only a high school diploma, I was not afforded the opportunities to acquire certain jobs. This made me realized the importance of furthering my education. Many personal experiences have influenced my understanding that without a college education I will not be able to provide financially for my family and to give them the foundation which they need to succeed. Abraham Lincoln quoted that one should, “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” It is often perceived that having children at a young age would halt my opportunities to obtain a college education or opportunities for me to have a productive life, however, that perception was wrong. Like other parents I have been repeating the mantras, “go to school” and “education...

...College is Hard In any type of setting, be it academic, athletic, or otherwise, you will have those who succeed and those who fail. In the setting of a college, much akin to Chattahoochee Technical College, success or failure can mean the difference between an upward trajectory in a career path, or a minimum wage position at the local “hole in the wall” restaurant. According to collegeatlas.org, “70% of Americans will study at a 4-year college, but less than 2/3 of them will graduate with a degree.” (Beckstead) This means that for every 3 students in a college, at least one will likely drop out, either due to personal reasons, or due to failing grades. Therefore, this essay will present to you a few discrepancies between a pair of example students, who we shall name “Alex” and “Frank,” as a way of demonstrating the differences between an “A” student and an “F” student....
