WILL SMITH
THE MAN, THE ACTOR, THE ARTIST, THE LEGEND.
Will Smith, a name synonymous with greatness and immortality. A name comparable to such greats as Isaac Newton, Abraham Lincoln, and Superman. A man who seemingly has conquered every aspect of the entertainment industry as we know it. With multiple musical hits spanning several decades, an iconic hugely popular sitcom, and with countless blockbusters, Will Smith is part of an elite group of people who have been able to enjoy success in the three major entertainment categories within the United States. Not since the discovery of fire has the world been so captivated, not since the invention of the wheel has the world seen such success, and not since the days of the bible has the world experienced such perfection. “…Jesus has gone away to heaven, and some day, just as He went, He will return!” (Acts 1:10-11, TLB). These words insight hope, hope that maybe after 2000 years the savior has finally returned in the form of a fine piece of chocolate, better known as Will Smith. If not the messiah, it is safe to conclude that God had created Will for a much more important reason than is even possible to conceive by any living being. His rise to fame, compelling, his music, timeless, his movies, groundbreaking, and his life, nothing short of amazing. Follow as you are taken from West Philadelphia all the way to the very pinnacle of stardom.
In West Philadelphia born and raised, on the playground is where he spent most of his days, just chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’ all cool, and all shootin’ some b-ball outside of the school, the legend starts with the planet earth receiving the gift of Willard Christopher “Will” Smith Jr. on September 25th, 1968. Born to the modest Caroline, a simple Philadelphia School Board Worker, and to a refrigeration engineer, Willard Christopher Smith Sr. By the age of thirteen, his parents, Caroline and Willard had parted ways and divorced. While attending Overbrook High School located in West Philadelphia, Will’s overpowering charm and impeccable demeanor had earned him the suitable nickname of “prince”, shortly thereafter the word fresh was added to the appellation, creating the household name “The Fresh Prince”. As fate would have it, one night at a social get together, Will was introduced to one Jeff Townes, an aspiring DJ also known as “DJ Jazzy Jeff”, it wasn’t just the start of a friendship, but the start of the harmonious duo known as “DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince”. While Jeff took on the task of mixing, Will handled the rhymes and lyrics. It is chilling to find out how close we were to never having the amazing musical and acting gifts bestowed upon us at all. Shortly after graduating high school, thanks to his family connections and far superior intellect Will was offered a scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Although a wonderful opportunity Will knew that his calling and life purpose led him elsewhere. With all distractions out of the way the group was able to find early success in radio-friendly songs that later would win them a Grammy. Even after his musical success, Will Smith’s true calling had yet to come. In 1990 Will’s acting career was born, the television network NBC approached him with the request to star in a new television sitcom, they called it “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and just like that, Will Smith had exploded like a supernova into the television and into the hearts of millions upon millions of people worldwide. Although his film debut came in the film Where the Day Takes You, followed by his very notable dramatic performance in Six Degrees of Separation, it was his seductive role as Detective Mike Lowery in the action/comedy Bad Boys that really transformed him into the actor extraordinaire he is today. Music before the blessing of Willard Smith can be summed up in one simple word, noise. Music as an art form was not first experienced until the collaboration between The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff began to make their countless harmonious ballads. The first of which came in the year 1987 with the smash hit “Girls Ain’t Nothin’ But Trouble”. The record, which was on the debut album “Rock the House”, was a coming to age and informational song, which laid the road map for many adolescents’ lives from that point forward. It wasn’t until the second album “He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper” that the group blasted into the mainstream music scene in which they came to dominate. The album contained the all but too true record titled “Parents Just Don’t Understand”. Containing sixteen other catchy life-changing songs the album was one of the first Hip-Hop LP’s to go double-platinum. Thanks to the easy-going, clean cut, and witty style of music, the duo was able to receive parental approval and at the same time cross racial lines, which many agree, united the country as a whole. This monumental album would lead up to one of Will’s greatest achievements of his career. In 1988 they gained timeless stardom by winning the first ever Grammy Award in the rap category. The duo produced three other albums over the coarse of the next five years prior to Will going solo with “And in This Corner...” (1989), “Homebase” (1991), and “Code Red” (1993). Will’s solo career in the music business started in 96’ with the historic LP “Big Willie Style”. Included on this momentous album were the songs “Gettin' Jiggy Wit It”, “Just the Two of Us”, “Miami”, and of course sharing the name, and the theme song to his hit movie “Men in Black”. The remaining albums released from Will Smith as a solo artist (Willennium, Born to Reign, Lost and Found) although incredibly great, never lived up to the tremendous success of “Big Willie Style”. Be it performing wild hilarious antics with Bel-Air’s elite or saving the world from vile aliens trying to enslave the human race, Will Smith has continuously been able to leave his audiences more captivated than a twelve year-old boy watching lesbian pornography. Prior to Will’s sitcom and countless record breaking movies it was never thought possible to get such an enormous amount of beauty and talent to work together in order to make the epitome of filmography perfection, but time and time again Will has proved that it is indeed possible for a man of his flawless stature. Often thought of as the greatest television comedy in the history of comedy, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was Will’s first acting gig, where he starred as himself growing up in the chic mansions of Bel-Air with his aunt and her family. The show, which ran from 1991-1996 was an instant success and showed the world that this was a multi-talented superstar just waiting to be exposed. Making his film debut in Mark Rocco’s 1992 film Where the Day Takes You, Will had found among is many talents, the one in which would imprint him in history forever. One year later Will made a performance in the film Six Degrees of Separation, but it wasn’t until he portrayed the character “Mike Lowery” in the movie Bad Boys that the mainstream public finally noticed what a bright star Will Smith was in a sea of dookie. With Martin Lawrence as a co-star, the film was about two Miami detectives (Smith and Lawrence) who pursue a French drug lord after he made away with 100 million dollars worth of heroin, the movie spawned a sequel in 2003(Bad Boys II). The next amazing film to star Will Smith was in 1996 as he fought and saved the earth from invading aliens as USMC pilot Captain Steven Hiller. The Academy Award winning film accomplished a total worldwide gross of $816,969,268, which just so happens to be the 18th highest grossing movie of all time. Shortly after we find Will Smith as James Edwards AKA Agent J, in his second sci-fi blockbuster hit Men in Black. Side by side with Tommy Lee Jones, Will becomes part of a secret government agency whose only mission is to conceal the existence and protect the world from countless alien life forms inhabiting the earth. Due to it’s $589 million success Men in Black managed a sequel in 2002 called what else but Men in Black II. Will was later offered the role of “Neo” in the nerdy movie The Matrix, but to his better judgement turned it down. It was not until after movies such as Wild Wild West and The Legend of Beggar Vance, that Will received his first of two Academy Award nominations for portraying “The Greatest” Mr. Muhammad Ali in the inspiring biographical film Ali. From 2004-2005 Will starred in and produce both movies Hitched and I. Robot. During the year Will was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records after attending a record three premieres in a span of only 24 hours. In Late 2005 he had also leant his voice for the main character “Oscar” in the animated children’s’ comedy Shark Tale. The second of Will Smith’s Academy Award Best Actor nominations came in 2006 when he starred and produced the film based on a true story, The Pursuit of Happyness. It follows Chris Garner, a Homeless man, with son Christopher (played by Will’s real-life son Jaden) as Garner is able to acquire an internship with a stock brokerage firm. Making $27 million in its’ first weekend, the film was Will Smith’s sixth consecutive number-one opening. Since, Will’s latest work, I Am Legend, involves him starring as a virologist who some how is immune to a virus which infects the worlds population killing or converting them into light sensitive mutants. On its’ opening weekend the film grossed a reported $77,211,321, and as of February 18th, 2008 grossed a total of $572 million worldwide.
Many wonder when they see this iconic figure, ever so perfect, surrounded by a glowing aura, seemingly in everyone’s fantasies, “Who is the man behind the legend?” Well in 1992 Will Smith had married his first wife, Sheree Zampino on May 9th. Later that same year the first of the next generation of Wills was born on November 11th. They named him Willard Christopher III, but he goes by the nickname of “trey”. Trey later would appear in Will’s music video for his song “Just the Two of Us” Just three years after saying their vows Sheree couldn’t handle being married to such a perfect person and the two divorced in 1995. It wasn’t until 1997 that Willard found and married the smoking hot actress, Jada Pinkett on December 31st. A few months later the couple’s first child was born in Jaden Christopher Syre on July 8th, 1998. Jaden went on to make his film debut along side his father in The Pursuit of Happyness. Will’s third child, the marriages’ second, was born on October 31st, 2000 and was named Willow Camille Reign. Along with his brother, Harry Smith, Will owns Treyball Development Inc, a Beverly Hills based developing company named after his first son. Will along with his wife, Jada, are the founders of the Will and Jada Foundation. The foundation gives money towards youth educational programs and helps deprived children and their families in inner cities. The Smith family is known to have property on the luxurious Star Island in Miami, Florida, Los Angeles, Stockholm, Sweden, and in Philadelphia. As a reflection Will has been consistently listed in Fortune Magazine's "Richest 40" list of the forty wealthiest Americans under the age of 40.
It is arguable to say that no other person in history has been able to experience such success in the wide variety of ways in which the immortal Will Smith has. The question of “is he the second coming?” can be perceived as some what ludicrous sounding, but to those and only those who have not had the privilege to learn all of the great accomplishments and gifts Will Smith has generously given the our civilization. He has left an everlasting mark on the television, music, and movie industries, not to mention countless peoples’ lives. He has amassed a large collection of timeless and irreplaceable movies, songs, and above all fans. Whether it is saving the planet from aliens or making it with that fly honey Jada Pinkett, Will Smith’s success is a sky-high benchmark in which will forever remain unobtainable. Smith for president 2012.

...ANALYTICAL ESSAY 1: How Adam Smith Has Shaped Our Economy For The Better Jose Arguello University of Redlands July 25, 2013 Introduction The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss how Adam Smith’s economic theories have shaped our economy for the better. This paper will define Adam Smith’s major economic theories and relate them to today’s economy. This paper will conclude with recommendations on how some of these theories can be improved. Discussion When people think of Adam Smith they think of Adam Smith “the economist.” In fact, many don’t realize that Adam Smith was a philosopher at heart. From that critical thinking space as a philosopher, Adam Smith developed his economic theories. Adam Smith obtained a professorship at Glasgow teaching moral philosophy. “Here, Smith developed his passion for liberty, reason, and free speech. In 1740 Smith was awarded the Snell exhibition and left to attend Balliol College, Oxford.” (Buchanan, 2006) These are important facts about Adam Smith because it gives us an insight to his philosophy and eventually into his economic theories. Furthermore, before Adam Smith wrote his well-known work, The Wealth of Nations, he wrote The Theory of Moral Sentiments. It is important to note that in writing The Theory of Moral Sentiment, Adam Smith’s goal “was to explain the source of mankind's ability to form moral judgments, in spite of man's natural inclinations towards self-interest. Smith proposes a theory of sympathy...

David Smith

...One artist I found particularly interesting was David Smith. He was born in 1906 in Indiana. In 1921, his family moved to Ohio. While in high school, Smith enrolled in a correspondence course in cartooning offered by the Cleveland Art School and made illustrations for his high school yearbook. After he graduated, Smith attended Ohio University for one year. During his summer vacation, he worked for an automobile factory as a riveter; he also did soldering, spot-welding, and worked a lathe. This, in my opinion, may be the first influence of his artwork (especially the Cubi pieces, being he used material requiring that type of work). Next, Smith attended Notre Dame University and took a job at a finance agency. Smith moved to NYC, planning to work at a bank. There, he met a woman (Dehner) who studied at the Art Students League. Upon her recommendation, Smith enrolled in ASL. He took evening painting and that summer, the two of them visited upstate New York, where they bought a decrepit house and barn on 86 acres of land. For the next five years, Smith studied with artists Sloan, Nicolaides, and Matulka, (the last who he took private classes with). Smith also explored New York culture, taking an interest in modern dance and jazz music, which I believe is portrayed through his abstract artwork. From October 1931 to June 1932, Smith and Dehner lived in St. Thomas, where Smith painted and assembled small constructions using pieces of wood, coral, and other found objects...

...Adam Smith Adam Smith is known for his vast knowledge of economics, he is considered to be the father. We may recognize him from his book The Wealth of Nations. The Wealth of Nations informs us that if we maximize the markets behavior than a free trade environment could be made available. In this essay I will discuss the importance of Smith’s theory, along with how he would develop plans to help the economy. Adam Smith grew up in a market environment in which Mercantilism was thought to be the best theory to help build a countries capital. Mercantilism “is a system in which a country attempts to amass wealth through trade with other countries, exporting more than it imports and increasing stores of gold and precious metals. It is often considered an outdated system.”(Vocabulary .com Retrieved April 13, 2013) Smith expressed his thoughts about the mercantile system, he thought the system had inconsistencies, and a countries wealth was not based upon its prosperity. He also thought that production should increase in the free market. The division of labor was a suggested policy. The division of labor theory is the “separation of manufacturing process into distinct and simple operations which are then delegated to specific hands or machines to perform”(Division of Labor Retrieved on April 13, 2013). He thought that this would increase the number of productive workers against the number of unproductive workers. Smith was...

Adam Smith

...Adam Smith was born to Margaret Douglas in Scotland during the year 1723. Interestingly enough, his father was also named Adam Smith, but died two months before the birth of his son. His father’s occupation was as a lawyer. A strange fact about Adam Smith is that his exact date of birth was never recorded. It is known, however, that Smith was baptized on the 5th of June 1723 (Buchan, 2006). Very few happenings of Adam Smith’s childhood have been documented, but a biographer of Smith’s noted one story. It was written that when Adam Smith was only four years old gypsies abducted him (Rae, 1895). Thankfully, Smith was safely returned to his family where he was allowed to grow into a great philosopher and economist. Growing up, Smith was very close to his mother and was encouraged to follow scholarly aspirations. In Scotland, he attended one of the nicest secondary schools before entering the University of Glasgow at age 14. While at Glasgow Smith studied moral philosophy and developed his thinking in a way that resulted in his reasoning later in life. He later moved on to study political science at Balliol College, Oxford. Smith actually believed that the teaching at Glasgow was superior to that at Oxford, because Oxford was found to be intellectually stifling (Bussing-Burks, 2003). Smith left Oxford to return home and eventually he wound up giving lectures at Edinburgh in Scotland. Once established back in his native Scotland, Smith earned a spot at Glasgow University as a professor...

Adam Smith

...Adam Smith was a Scottish political economist and moral philosopher, who studied moral philosophy at Oxford University and University of Glasgow. Smith is considered by many to be the founding father of economics and the first free-market capitalist. In fact, in many ways his philosophies and theories have helped shape our country and our economy into what it is today. Smith introduced us to the invisible hand theory which referred to the free markets. The invisible hand theory stated that ultimately when people were left able to pursue their best interests, meaning that they were able to pursue work that made them happy and that enabled them to command the highest wage for themselves or when entrepreneurs were able to provide good and services for profit, this promoted the growth and prosperity of the nation. In simpler terms, each individual while looking out for himself or herself will inadvertently help improve the lives of others around them Adam Smith’s theories were a precursor to the free market system that we call capitalism. Smith’s theories held that the extent of government involvement should be limited and that the consumers would keep the markets at equilibrium. Smith’s theories held that in pursuing their best interests, consumer were able to choose the best prices and in doing so would weed out unfair competition, a process of elimination of sorts. These principles encouraged entrepreneurism and competition, which in itself is instrumental to the growth...

...Adam Smith And The Invisible Hand In the 18th century Adam Smith came up with a concept called the invisible hand theory. This concept shaped the way we use the free market today. What the invisible hand theory consist of is the fact that people in general are looking out for their own personal self-interest and that alone will create a higher demand for goods and services. This concept will generate profit and resources will be made available throughout the economy. It creates a profit motivation of individuals that drive an economy. With the book; The Wealth of Nations Adam Smith installed himself as the leading expositor of economic thought. Adam Smith was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. His widowed mother raised him. When he was fourteen he entered the University of Glasgow on scholarship. During this time period this was usual practice. After that he attended Balliol College at Oxford. He graduated with knowledge of European literature and ongoing contemnor for English schools. When he returned home he delivered a series of well received lectures. He left the academy in 1764 to be a tutor for young dukes of Buccleuch. This is where he began to travel for more than two years throughout France and into Switzerland. They describe it as an experience that brought Smith into contact with his contemporaries Voltaire. Since he received a life pension from the service of the duke he retired to his homeland and that’s when The Wealth of Nations was written. The same year the American...

...Adam Smith: A Scottish philosopher and economist, who was born in 1723. In his early years he studied philosophy in a university. In this university he learned the Greek. He was greatly influenced by a philosophy teacher named Francis. He graduated at seventeen with a scholarship that facilitated him to continue studying in Oxford University's Balliol College. Adam was a reserved individual and had the opportunity to meet with influential people along his life. He also enjoyed reading books in his free time and learn many things. He became the first political economist the world had known. He later became a professor of Logic; his students loved him and his work. As of today in the U.S economy Adam Smith would be deeply troubled about financial sectors and consolidation. He differed in many ways from an economist nowadays. At those times he didn’t earn a PhD because it didn’t exist. He wasn’t a trained economist either but he studied and had what it took him to become who he now is. Adam Smith would be happy to see the livings standards that we are living today.  The rapid industrialization in many parts of the world would also be important for him since years ago workers would work many hours a day and earning way less than they deserved.  In those years the working conditions weren’t as they are now.  The places were industrial workers were unsafe and had few protections that put their lives at risk. He believed in a system that encourages individuals to pursue...

...Adam Smith and The role of Government To what extent should Government play a role in economy and society is hotly contested . The opinions vary wildly , from one extreme of anarchism who believe in no government to another extreme of socialist totalitarian , who argue for full and complete control by state of the society and the economy . Vast majority of people though have a view which lies somewhere between the aforementioned extremes , even so these "moderate " can and indeed often do vary greatly . Up until the late 1800s the government role in society of developed countries was minor . Government expenditures, revenue from taxation compared to total economic output was very small, and regulation were unheard of . All this began to change in late 1800s , when Germany enacted the laws relating to what we now call welfare state . Since then, even nations that stayed away from the extremes of fascism and communism have embraced the more widened role for the government . In almost all of the developed western democracies , national governments have expanded the welfare state by enacting various welfare programs such as state pension , universal health care, free education unemployment benefits etc. The Government expenditure as well as taxation revenue compared to total economic output have risen dramatically and regulations of private sector is commonplace and complex. In this paper , we do not argue to what extent should state be involved the economy and society...

...“Adam Smith Meets Climate Change How the theory of moral sentiments could be applied to cap-and-trade greenhouse-gas emissions.” By Ian Ayres and Doug Kysar Slate, Posted Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at 11:53 AM ET Despite all the attention to domestic oil drilling, Obama and McCain are not that far apart on climate change—both candidates support a cap-and-trade system to limit U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions. And neither candidate has told us much about how they will get the rest of the world on the cap-and-trade bandwagon. That challenge deserves more focus—unless we can entice fast-growing emitters like China, India, and Brazil ! into a climate change treaty as full participants, even complete energ y independence in this country will be little consolation in a warming world. We think Adam Smith may have had a suggestion for how to think about this problem—and it's more than just an invisible hand. For 30 years now, officials have been groping toward a system in which greenhouse-gas emitters all around the world can trade permits. GHG reductions achieve the same global atmospheric benefit regardless of where they occur, but because industries and firms have different costs of reduction, it makes economic sense to allow them to trade permits. That way we can lower emissions for less money. But a crucial sticking point is figuring out how to initially allocate emissions permits among the various countries of the world. [PROPOSAL ONE:] Generally speaking, richer nations...

...The origins of capitalism can be traced back to the man who is considered its founding father, Adam Smith. In 1776, Smith published The Wealth of Nations, a magnum opus that described the philosopher’s views on topics such as the division of labor and productivity, and how each played a role in the implementation of laissez-faire economics. Smith believed that the adoption of this type of system would create an ideal society through supply and demand enterprise. Karl Marx once prophesized that a working-class revolution was inevitable due to effects of capitalism and free-markets. Drawing his ideologies from his observations during the Industrial Revolution, Marx realized that social inequality existed between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie....

Pocahontas and John Smith

...Pocahontas and John Smith Pocahontas is set in 1607, just as a new age of exploration has begun. A group of British adventurers led by the greedy governor of the Virginia Company, John Ratcliffe, and including a fearless soldier named John Smith, have set sail for the New World aboard The Susan Constant, seeking gold and other treasures. Meanwhile, in Virginia, a beautiful young Native American woman named Pocahontas, the daughter of Chief Powhatan. The type of painting is made of oil canvas. The painting shows a lot of hate and love. I believe that the subject of the painting is justice and mercy because on the top of the painting is the king of the tribe. He shows leadership, order, and power. His people around him look up to him seeking wisdom and leadership. The king wants to punish the people who invade his land and especially the ones who take other lives. The painting is mostly dark colored with a white cloud surrounding Pocahontas. The tribe seem to be very close attached to each other. Even though everyone is Indian except for John Smith, Pocahontas has a European face. I feel like the painting is 3D. There are people ion the painting that do not stand out as much as the king, Pocahontas, John Smith, and the guy that wants to kill john Smith. Those four are standing out of the painting. Most of the lines are angled. Everyone is moving a certain way. There is a little of horizontal lines, but more angles are found in the painting. All of these elements were...
