William Barret Travis a general, father, and most importantly a man of great honor who inspired thousands of soldiers throughout his life. From birth to departure William was a brilliant man scholar but a better general. As a child William lived in South Carolina next to his old friend Jim Bonham and attended school in a log house each weekday during winter. William’s father later sold their plantation and moved the family to Sparta, Alabama. Here William became a great scholar and graduated from the Sparta Academy. As a young man he taught children at school and eagerly started to study law. They left Alabama early in 1831 and arrived in the port of Anahuac on March 2, 1831. William taught school and attended a school of law in Texas. He was very interested in church work and was a member of the Methodist Church. Often, William would write to the Methodist Board of Mission in New York City requesting that they send two missionaries to Texas. Travis promised he would provide protection from Indians and outlaws while the church ceremony was going on. William kept his promise and the missionaries were sent. Soon later, Texas went to war with Mexico and Travis was asked to command the army at the Alamo. He left his son and his friends then was on his way to the Alamo. He arrived in February and noticed that they didn’t have enough supplies so he sent out a risk taking letter requesting for help. The letter arrived too late in many places but 32 men did come from Gonzales. Travis and his men tried at the best of their ability to defend the Alamo after what felt like a lifetime of blood, cries, and gunshots. Eventually, the Alamo along with it’s men eventually fell after days of sleepless nights and stressful worries.
William Barret Travis had many great accomplishments during the course of his life but the best was probably when he inspired some 200 Texan soldiers during the Battle of the Alamo although they knew their fate of dying. Not only was he a great general but he was also very skilled
