Concert Review: Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra

On September 26, 2015 the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra from Brooklyn, New York visited SUNY Oswego for a performance. WSO is a group of musicians from Brooklyn, New York that combines the traditional sound of native salsa with the modern twist of pop and hip-hop to create a very unique sound. Their large set list was composed of bands such as The Black Keys, TV On the Radio, LCD Sound system and others. Many scholars have argued that WSO’s debut album “resets the boundaries of the art form” and “contains some of the best young players on the scene”. This statement is not at first very clear to the listener. When one listens to the music, they hear music from other artists. But, when you go back and listen to the way the band broadcasts themselves to the audience, it can be heard the politics in their lyrics. They want a unity of cultures to be more peaceful and more welcoming. When most people think of Brooklyn salsa, friendliness does not come to mind. No matter what race you the listener is, they are affected by the music with a feeling of excitement and fun. The multiple instruments which make up salsa include bongos, trumpet, cowbell, and vocals which cause a mix of cultures from South America to North America. WSO uses an older style of American music which brings the listeners back in time to the era of the roaring twenties and a time of emerging music.
