...Amazon’s Executive Summary Amazon started off as an internet based company under Amazon.com, Inc in July of 1995 and operates as an online retailer in North America and internationally, which was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos and formerly known as Cadabra.com and has been very lucrative every since its existence. It’s headquartered in Seattle, WA (Bladeknight, 2008). Amazon continues to operate various retail Web sites, including Amazon.com, Amazon.co.fr, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.co.de, Amazon.cn, and Amazon.ca. Amazon specializes in a mixture of products, such as digital downloads, music and games, electronics and computers, movies, books, kids and baby items, toys, home and garden, jewelry, health and beauty supplies, apparels, grocery, auto, industrial items, tools, and sports and outdoors accessories (Amazon.com, Inc 2010). Their additional strategy is to focus more on their first new on-site store in Philadelphia. Amazon’s marketing strategy is to focus on their on-site store in Philadelphia, PA and push for it to be as promising as their on-line businesses. They will implements this strategy by continuing with their competitive pricing and beating anyone of their competitors’ pricing on any one items that is sold in their store or websites. Their consumers would be allowed to purchase products that are not on the on-site store shelves or inventory on-line and have the option to have it shipped to the Philadelphia location. ...HEAVY EDIT JetBlue Airlines: Getting “Blue” again?* JetBlue posted a net income $97 million in 2010. The airline continues to pursue its goal of becoming ―the Americas‘ Favorite Airline‖ and aims attainting positive free cash flow and long term sustainable growth while maintaining adequate liquidity position. Financially, the airline was far better than after the Valentine day fiasco in February 2007 and subsequent loss of $84 million in 2008. It focuses on controlling costs, maximizing unit revenues, managing capital expenditures and aims at achieving disciplined growth (see Exhibit 1).1 However, in the recent years, JetBlue appears to be moving away from its core strategy, in quite interesting ways, of being a low-cost player providing the distinctive ―JetBlue experience.‖ In its efforts to boost revenues, the airline began charging $10 to $20 for seats with extra legroom, doubled its ticket-change fee to $100, and introduced refundable tickets that cost more than nonrefundable ones. Further, the airline began charging $7 for a pillow-and-blanket kit, an amenity usually provided free of charge by other airlines.2 Breaking another low-cost rule, JetBlue moved away from ticket sales through its own Web site and signed up with travel agencies and the Galileo and Sabre global distribution systems in August 2006 and with online travel agencies such as Orbitz in January 2008. Further, it sold approximately 42.6 million shares of common stock to Deutsche Lufthansa, the German...

...Answer key at the end of the each set of Listening and Reading answers you will find a chart which will help you assess if, on the basis of your practice test results, you are ready to take the IELTS exam. In interpreting your score, there are a number of points you should bear in mind. Your performance in the real IELTS test will be reported in two ways: there will be a Band Score from 1 to 9 for each of the modules and an Overall Band Score from 1 to 9, which is the average of your scores in the four modules. However, institutions considering your application are advised to look at both the Overall Band and the Bands for each module. They do this in order to see if you have the language skills needed for a particular course of study. For example, if your course has a lot of reading and writing, but no lectures, listening comprehension might be less important and a score of 5 in Listening might be acceptable if the Overall Band Score was 7. However, for a course where there are lots of lectures and spoken instructions, a score of 5 in Listening might be unacceptable even though the Overall Band Score was 7. Once you have marked your papers you should have some idea of whether your Listening and Reading skills are good enough for you to try the real IELTS test. If you did well enough in one module but not in others, you will have to decide for yourself whether you are ready to take the proper test yet. The Practice Tests have been checked so that they are about...

...GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND DIPLOMACY STUDENT GUIDELINE NOTES GLOBAL POLITICAL ECONOMY MODULE Paste the notes here… Political economy originally was the term for studying production, buying and selling, and their relations with law, custom, and government. Political economy originated in moral philosophy (e.g. Adam Smith was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow), it developed in the 18th century as the study of the economies of states — polities, hence political economy. In late nineteenth century, the term "political economy" was generally replaced by the term economics, used by those seeking to place the study of economy upon mathematical and axiomatic bases, rather than the structural relationships of production and consumption (cf. marginalism, Alfred Marshall). History of the term Originally, political economy meant the study of the conditions under which production was organized in the nation-states. The phrase économie politique (translated in English as political economy) first appeared in France in 1615 with the well known book by Antoyne de Montchrétien: Traicté de l’oeconomie politique. French physiocrats, Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Karl Marx were some of the exponents of political economy. In 1805, Thomas Malthus became England's first professor of political economy, at the East India Company College, Haileybury, Hertfordshire. The world's first professorship in political economy was established...

...FREAKONOMICS A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything Revised and Expanded Edition Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner CONTENTS AN EXPLANATORY NOTE In which the origins of this book are clarified. vii PREFACE TO THE REVISED AND EXPANDED EDITION xi 1 INTRODUCTION: The Hidden Side of Everything In which the book’s central idea is set forth: namely, if morality represents how people would like the world to work, then economics shows how it actually does work. Why the conventional wisdom is so often wrong . . . How “experts”— from criminologists to real-estate agents to political scientists—bend the facts . . . Why knowing what to measure, and how to measure it, is the key to understanding modern life . . . What is “freakonomics,” anyway? 1. What Do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers Have in Common? 15 In which we explore the beauty of incentives, as well as their dark side—cheating. Contents Who cheats? Just about everyone . . . How cheaters cheat, and how to catch them . . . Stories from an Israeli day-care center . . . The sudden disappearance of seven million American children . . . Cheating schoolteachers in Chicago . . . Why cheating to lose is worse than cheating to win . . . Could sumo wrestling, the national sport of Japan, be corrupt? . . . What the Bagel Man saw: mankind may be more honest than we think. 2. How Is the Ku Klux Klan Like a Group of Real-Estate Agents? 49 In which it is argued that nothing is more powerful than information,...

Dear Doctor--Here is one of the most carefully hewn stones in the second course of the foundation of a literary edifice which I have slowly and laboriously constructed. I wish to inscribe your name upon it, as much to thank the man whose science once saved me as to honor the friend of my daily life. De Balzac. THE LILY OF THE VALLEY ENVOI Felix de Vandenesse to Madame la Comtesse Natalie de Manerville: whom we ignore their I yield to your wishes. It is the privilege of the women love more than they love us to make the men who love them the ordinary rules of common-sense.
