This information was conducted through a windshield survey of the Hereford, Texas community. This survey is to include assessment, diagnosis and goals for this community. Hereford is located 40 miles west of Amarillo. According to the city-data it has a population of 15,349 with 70.2% being Hispanic; the mean household is 37,416 and the average age being 30 years old. The most common occupation in Hereford is cattle feed yards or truck transportation services.
It is clear that the housing communities are small and not well kept, the playgrounds and neighborhoods were empty, and it appears not a lot of physical activity is taking place. While driving around it is identified that there is a large amount of obese people that are living in Hereford, this was observed by watching individuals coming in and out of the convenience stores. According to the city-data there are 26.9% of obesity in adults and 13.1% in preschool children living in Hereford. Being overweight is a result of cultural norms, lifestyle, poverty, lack of health care and uninsured contributes to the problem. Hispanics are one of the minority groups they have less access to health care because more of them do not have insurance. Obesity can lead to many health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.
It is observed there are limited access to recreational activities, healthy foods and more access to fast food restaurants. Excessive intake of high fatty foods and inadequate physical activity is also contributing factor in the obesity epidemic. With 25.3% living in poverty and with the low prices and affordable menu at the fast food restaurants this low income population can enjoy these foods where fruits and vegetables are limited. Hispanics have a high fat diet and lack of fruits and vegetables to balance the calorie intake. While most Hispanics have a usually have one income source and

...Windshield Survey of Lake Worth, Florida NUR 405 June 10, 2013 Windshield Survey of Lake Worth Florida As nurses we know medical professionals more than ever are responsible for treating large diverse populations. Understanding cultural differences in various populations is crucial to produce positive outcomes. Nurses have a major role in health care promotion. Nurses should be treating the patient as a whole in mind, body, and spirit. This should be included in community treatment too. Individual, family, environment, and community assessments are necessary to provide the care and improve health care outcomes in the community as a whole. The World Health Organization’ s (WHO) definition of community is “a group of people, often living in a defined geographical area, who share a common culture, values and norms which have been developed by the community in the past and modified in the future” (p. 397). For me this means these people generally have the same of similar beliefs and values. Community health is described as “the meeting of collective needs by identifying problems and managing behaviors within the community itself and between the community and larger society” (p. 401). My understanding of community as the client is the care given has the potential to affect the whole community not just one family. Nurses can provide education and treatment in the community in settings such as schools, parks, civil centers, the workplace, and home. The result...

...Windshield Survey Housing and Zoning During our drive around the community of Panthersville, we were amazed to see several well-kept communities or subdivisions. This community has a mixture of older homes dating back to the 1950’s and more modern homes being built in the 2000’s. Most of the older homes seen on Kelly Drive and other older streets were build in the 1950’s to 1960’s with a concrete foundation. These homes were similar in sizes, slightly different in shape. These homes were built with car porches (detached and undetached from house) instead of a garage. These homes seen in our survey were clean with well-maintained lawns (no uncut grass due to season). Window air conditioners and outside propane tanks for heating were common with most of these homes. Surveying the area around Clifton Springs Road, Clifton Church Road and Panthersville Road, the houses were newer and modern in structure. Various architectural styles and each house having its own identity were seen in these different subdivisions. The newer homes seen are built with various siding materials and small amounts of brick or concrete material. Each house had either one to two car garages or a paved driveway. The lots were much smaller than those of the older homes. There were no signs of decay around the homes; each home appeared to be well maintained and secured. There were privacy fences and home alarms signs around the majority of the homes. During our survey, there were less than 10 homes seen...

...Windshield survey Name: Institution: Course: Tutor: Date: Introduction The community I have chosen to consider in my survey is Kiryas Joel, a village in Monroe, New York where I reside. Majority of the residents in this town are Hasidic Jews, who are strictly bound to the Torah commandments. Yiddish is the language that most of the people in this village speak. The people in this area usually have large families, which makes its economy poor as compared to other communities in the US (Citydata.com, 2013). The village was reported to have the highest poverty rate in the United States, in a survey conducted in 2008. More than 30% of the residents survive below the federal poverty line, with 40% receiving relief food (Citydata.com, 2013). The village has experienced growth in its population in the last few years. The population was at 7, 400 people in 1990, which had increased to 13, 100 in 2000. In 2005, the population of this village had gone up to 18, 300 (Citydata.com, 2013). ...Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection I have lived in the neighborhood of Fruitridge Manor in Sacramento for the past three years. Being able to enjoy the proximity to downtown and Tahoe Park has been a perk, because the housing in this area is affordable. When I decided to interview one of my neighbors for this project, I came to the realization that I have not taken the time to enjoy what we have around us. By conducting this windshield survey, I was able to understand why most of the neighbors that live in this area have stayed through the years. Some of the areas that would be covered in this document are the family’s community and their environment, as well as the diversity in community. I will also be defining the following terms; community, community health, community as client, and partnerships. Family’s Community and Environment A community can be defined as the interaction of individuals in a social network, usually focused in a defined territory according to our textbook (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, p.190). When interviewing the Doe’s family, it was evident the closeness of their community. Mr. Doe was able to point out each neighbor in the street he lives on and how long they have been living in the community. The pride of ownership is apparent by how the streets are free of clutter, trash and the maintenance of a their front yards. Although the neighborhood has changed through the years, the most visible changed one can see is the aging of members...

...Community health nurses treat communities through the application of the nursing process. The process is community focused rather than treating the individual. Phase one begins with identifying a community. Phase two is the assessment phase consisting of data collection, interpretation, and analysis. The collection of direct data may be done through focus groups, interviews, observation, and windshield surveys. Denver, Colorado was the focus of my windshield survey, and I saw more in one day than I ever noticed as a resident for four years. I recognized that drug use is prevalent, there are a large number of medical marijuana dispensaries, and the homeless population is greater than I thought previously. Each of these issues in Denver warrants their own community nursing diagnosis. Three priority nursing diagnoses, based solely on the windshield survey, are risk of violence among the businesses of Denver related to neighboring medical marijuana dispensaries, risk of crime among the residents of Denver related to prevalent drug use and sales, and risk of malnutrition among the homeless population of Denver related to lack of access to adequate nutrition. Medical marijuana dispensaries are popping up in every neighborhood of Colorado, but in Denver alone there are sometimes two dispensaries per block. This puts people in the area at risk for increased violence, such as beatings, murder, and violent burglary. If the state regulators limited the number of dispensaries per...

...Survey Reflection Community health nurses treat communities through the application of the nursing process. The process is community focused rather than treating the individual. Phase one begins with identifying a community. Phase two is the assessment phase consisting of data collection, interpretation, and analysis. The collection of direct data may be done through focus groups, interviews, observation, and windshield surveys. Drug sales and use is visible throughout the Denver area, and the types of illicit drugs used goes well beyond medical marijuana. As I drove around performing my windshield survey, I witnessed people on the street handing money to another person and orally taking what they were given in exchange, and others would put what they were given into their pockets. Marijuana is openly used and rarely questioned. According to the National Drug Intelligence Center (2007), much of the drug-related crime consists of “assaults, home invasions, homicides, and robberies” (para. 1). The community health nurse could decrease the amount of drug use and sales in the area by educating the residents of the area and organizing neighborhood watch groups. This can empower the residents of the area to take a stand and work with law enforcement to decrease the drug activity in the area. The homeless rate in Denver is increasing because of loss of jobs, and the moderate weather draws homeless people from other areas to reside in Denver. There are shelters and food resources...

...Windshield Survey for Zip Code 77004 Eugene Harris NUR/405 Healthy Communities: Theory And Practice November 28th, 2011 Beth Meadows Community health nursing has become a focal point in healthcare since the 1960s-70s when the civil right movement shifted the goal from a charitable concept to a political commitment in order to rectify racial injustices of the past (Stanhope and Lancaster, 2008). Many programs came about with the goal of addressing inequalities in the delivery of healthcare based upon social-economical status. Nurse practitioners then became an important factor in the delivery of healthcare, thereby affecting services offered in community health clinics which improved local accessibility to healthcare. (Stanhope and Lancaster, 2008). Many dynamic changes occurred since then with nurses making important contributions in disease prevention and health promotion in the community which countered the escalating costs of acute hospital care. The definition of a community, in simplicity, is a group of people who live in the same area, or the area in which they live. Unfortunately, this definition does not completely explain what a community is. A community would be individuals who share the same space and interact with each other either directly or indirectly via mechanisms or environment. A community is more than a cluster of individuals, it also will be constructed of families and aggregates (persons with many commonalities) that are interdependent or whose...

These individuals may share the same culture and values. The individuals are arranged in a social structure as related to relationships, which the community has developed over a length of time. Common beliefs are shared and by doing this the members of the community acquire their own personal and identity within the society. The beliefs and values that have been developed by the community previously may be modified in the future (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012). Define Community Health Community health is defined as an ongoing series of changes that promote health (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012). The changes occur within the community between the nurse and the community. Community health has three components. The status of the community, the structure, and the process of the community. The status of the community includes morbidity and mortality rates as well as risk factor profiles. The structure of community health is the services and resources within the community. The process of community health looks at how the communities solve problems. Define Community as a Client The community as a client is defined as a situation...

...Windshield Survey NUR/405 December 3, 2012 Pamela Smith Abstract Windshield Survey A community is a group of people who live in the same area, interact with each other, and share certain norms and values. A community is defined as a locality-based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting societal institutions, informal groups, and aggregates that are interdependent and whose function or expressed intent is to meet a wide variety of collective needs (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012). Community health is the process or characteristics that allow a community’s population and economy to survive. Community health is defined as the meeting of collective needs through identification of problems and management of behaviors within the community itself and between the community and the larger society (Stanhope, & Lancaster, 2012). The community is the client if a nurse works towards helping the community even when this is accomplished by helping one individual at a time. The community is the client only when the nursing focus is on the collective or common good of the population instead of on individual health. Although the nurse may work with individuals, families or other interacting groups, aggregates, or institutions, or within a population, the resulting changes are intended to affect the whole community (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012). The Community Health Partnership (CHP) is a community development process that engages communities...

...Statement and Introduction Understanding the relationship between health outcomes to the environment is part of the foundation of modern nursing (Nightingale, 1969). A windshield survey is an informal method used by community health nurses to obtain basic knowledge about a given community. It provides a subjective view of the various physical characteristics of a communal area as observed while driving or walking through a neighborhood. Community assessment is an essential function of community nursing. Understanding the various types of community will help clarify the process. The first type of community described is a “geopolitical community” (Harkness & DeMarco, 2012, p. 177). It is an aggregate of people living or working in a defined geographic area. The second is “phenomenological community” (Harkness & DeMarco, 2012, p. 177), which is a collection of people sharing common interests, or philosophies and inter/intra personal connections. Borders for this type of community are not as clear as a geopolitical community. A phenomenological community can exist within a geopolitical community. An example of this is the homeless. The third is a broader view, encompassing a society, a nation, or the international community of the world as we know it.
