...Windshield Survey of Lake Worth, Florida NUR 405 June 10, 2013 Windshield Survey of Lake Worth Florida As nurses we know medical professionals more than ever are responsible for treating large diverse populations. Understanding cultural differences in various populations is crucial to produce positive outcomes. Nurses have a major role in health care promotion. Nurses should be treating the patient as a whole in mind, body, and spirit. This should be included in community treatment too. Individual, family, environment, and community assessments are necessary to provide the care and improve health care outcomes in the community as a whole. The World Health Organization’ s (WHO) definition of community is “a group of people, often living in a defined geographical area, who share a common culture, values and norms which have been developed by the community in the past and modified in the future” (p. 397). For me this means these people generally have the same of similar beliefs and values. Community health is described as “the meeting of collective needs by identifying problems and managing behaviors within the community itself and between the community and larger society” (p. 401). My understanding of community as the client is the care given has the potential to affect the whole community not just one family. Nurses can provide education and treatment in the community in settings such as schools, parks, civil centers, the workplace, and home. The result...

...Community Windshield Survey Susan Holcomb Community Health Nursing NR443 Chamberlain College of Nursing January 19, 2014 Community Windshield Survey The community I have chosen is Douglasville, Georgia which is about 20 miles west of Atlanta, Georgia and is located inside the Atlanta Metropolitan area. While driving through the community, it seems to be like most other communities in that you can be driving through a beautiful neighborhood and two streets over you can end up in the poverty stricken area where there are drug houses. Douglasville is a very family friendly city. There are lots of young families, middle aged families and a fair amount of young Grandparents who are primary care givers for their grand kids. It is predominately white at 83% with 13% being of African American decent and other races at 4%. Most of the people and families that I was able to see driving through the community were clean and seemed well kept up. Some appeared to be well nourished; some overweight and some appeared to be fit. During the evening survey, I noticed the night life of downtown Douglasville – there were a couple of sports bars in the area with mostly males drinking. It did not appear to be unruly but it was loud. The homes in the community are of a variety. Some neighborhoods, the houses are set far apart, some neighborhoods they were too close to each other; however, this was on purpose. The houses were mostly well maintained; however, there were some areas...

...Windshield Survey Bronx District 11 Morris Park A windshield survey is assessment tool used in community nursing that helps the community nurse become familiar with a certain area. This identifies the health needs of a particular community focusing on the exclusive needs of a certain community. This involves driving and walking through the targeted community to observe the communities characteristics. The observed neighborhood was the Bronx, district 11 of Morris Park. Morris Park borders Pelham Parkway at the north and on the east and south borders is Amtrak railroad tracks. To the east is the Hutchinson Parkway. Morris Park is comprised of both commercial and residential buildings. The residential buildings are mostly found on the smaller streets. The commercial buildings are on the outskirts of the neighborhood. Housing and Zoning The zoning regulations are a mixture of commercial and residential properties mostly made up of medium to low density occupancy. The residential area is mainly three family houses which accounts for approximately 90% of the buildings. These units are detached, semi-detached and attached houses. Some of the houses are as old as 70 years old with some as young as 10 years old. Most are kept in good condition. All of the homes are equipped with plumbing, heating and some with air conditioners. Open Space While evaluating the community it was found not to have a lot of green or open spaces. On the outskirts of Morris Park there are some...

...Windshield Survey Housing and Zoning During our drive around the community of Panthersville, we were amazed to see several well-kept communities or subdivisions. This community has a mixture of older homes dating back to the 1950’s and more modern homes being built in the 2000’s. Most of the older homes seen on Kelly Drive and other older streets were build in the 1950’s to 1960’s with a concrete foundation. These homes were similar in sizes, slightly different in shape. These homes were built with car porches (detached and undetached from house) instead of a garage. These homes seen in our survey were clean with well-maintained lawns (no uncut grass due to season). Window air conditioners and outside propane tanks for heating were common with most of these homes. Surveying the area around Clifton Springs Road, Clifton Church Road and Panthersville Road, the houses were newer and modern in structure. Various architectural styles and each house having its own identity were seen in these different subdivisions. The newer homes seen are built with various siding materials and small amounts of brick or concrete material. Each house had either one to two car garages or a paved driveway. The lots were much smaller than those of the older homes. There were no signs of decay around the homes; each home appeared to be well maintained and secured. There were privacy fences and home alarms signs around the majority of the homes. During our survey, there were less than 10 homes seen...

On the whole, h ealth care facilities, including a hospital, doctors, dentists, and even specialists, are all available within the borders of the Boro ugh Park community , and all health facilities are all accessible by car and public transportation, including subways and buses. I noted limited garden landscaping and very few animals while walking through the community . The lack of space for landscapin g lessens the threat of poisonous plant availability or soil to threaten children and animals with plant or soil borne disease. Similarly, I saw only a few stray cats, and no dogs or rats limiting the possibility of disease spread through animals. The re are numerous private schools in, and surrounding, zip code 11219 but only a few public schools. I found no reports of overcrowding in the public school system, though World Media Group, LLC (2013) reports that the public school system in zip code 11219 is ranked above average. ...Windshield Survey Maggie Siler Ferris State University Windshield Survey Community assessment is crucial to planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs to improve the health of a population. A windshield survey is an informal method used by community health nurses to obtain basic knowledge about a given community. It provides a subjective view of the various physical characteristics of a communal area as observed while driving or walking through a neighborhood. Community Community assessment is an essential function of community nursing. Understanding the various types of community will help clarify the process. The first type of community described is a “geopolitical community” (Harkness & DeMarco, 2012, p. 177). It is an aggregate of people living or working in a defined geographic area. The second is “phenomenological community” (Harkness & DeMarco, 2012, p. 177), which is a collection of people sharing common interests, or philosophies and inter/intra personal connections.Borders for this type of community are not as clear as a geopolitical community. A phenomenological community can exist within a geopolitical community. An example of this is the homeless. The third is a broader view, encompassing a society, a nation, or the international community of the world as we know it. Community Health Community health is usually focused on a specific geographic region. In this way, specific epidemiological data can be obtained, and a precise community...

...Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection Mary Lou Lamer NUR/405 January 25, 2013 Dawn Warner Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection Introduction “Although it is necessary to identify health risk factors among individuals and groups in the community, it is of paramount importance that nurses learn to identify and work with health problems of a defined population or the total community”. (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, pg. 395). The “windshield survey” is one method that the nurse can use to collect data about a particular community, however, understanding the meaning of community, community health, community as a client, and partnership, as they relay to nursing in the public setting, is important to successful data assessment. Community “Community is a locality – based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting society’s institutions, informal groups, and aggregates”. (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, pg. 398). There are varying definitions of the meaning of community. Those within a community usually share some type of common interest. There may be different types of communities; some examples of these communities are, face –to-face community, neighborhood community, community of identifiable need, and community of special interest. Community Health “Community Health is the meeting of collective needs by identifying problems and managing behaviors within the community itself and between the community and the larger society”. ...Windshield Survey Assessment Paper Windshield Survey Assessment Paper Physical The city of Victorville began in 1962 and started off with a population of 8,000 that has grown to be a population of 121,000, and continues to grow (92392 Zip Code Population and Races, n.d.). The condition of the houses appear to be in mint condition with the exception of some homes in the area of El Evado and Pacoima that have lawns that are dead and full of weeds. The paint on these homes are chipped and not well kept. There are many apartments in Victorville that appear to look old on the outside, but each apartment building has been renovated to look more twenty first century. There aren't many abandoned houses in the city of Victorville but there abandoned vehicles in front of houses that have oxidized paint and dust covering them. The houses in the neighborhoods are very similar in their layout, the only difference each house has is the color of the paint on outside of the house. Some residents have also added on additions to their homes such as extra rooms or in ground pools, which have raised the equity in these homes. There is one abandoned building that stands out in Victorville and that is because it is in a shopping center that has flourishing businesses within that same parking lot that use to be an Albertsons. This building has been empty for a couple years and is located on Bear Valley and Amargosa. There is a large number of stray dogs in Victorville due to the faulty wooden...

...Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection I have lived in the neighborhood of Fruitridge Manor in Sacramento for the past three years. Being able to enjoy the proximity to downtown and Tahoe Park has been a perk, because the housing in this area is affordable. When I decided to interview one of my neighbors for this project, I came to the realization that I have not taken the time to enjoy what we have around us. By conducting this windshield survey, I was able to understand why most of the neighbors that live in this area have stayed through the years. Some of the areas that would be covered in this document are the family’s community and their environment, as well as the diversity in community. I will also be defining the following terms; community, community health, community as client, and partnerships. Family’s Community and Environment A community can be defined as the interaction of individuals in a social network, usually focused in a defined territory according to our textbook (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, p.190). When interviewing the Doe’s family, it was evident the closeness of their community. Mr. Doe was able to point out each neighbor in the street he lives on and how long they have been living in the community. The pride of ownership is apparent by how the streets are free of clutter, trash and the maintenance of a their front yards. Although the neighborhood has changed through the years, the most visible changed one can see is the aging of members...

...Windshield survey Name: Institution: Course: Tutor: Date: Introduction The community I have chosen to consider in my survey is Kiryas Joel, a village in Monroe, New York where I reside. Majority of the residents in this town are Hasidic Jews, who are strictly bound to the Torah commandments. Yiddish is the language that most of the people in this village speak. The people in this area usually have large families, which makes its economy poor as compared to other communities in the US (Citydata.com, 2013). The village was reported to have the highest poverty rate in the United States, in a survey conducted in 2008. More than 30% of the residents survive below the federal poverty line, with 40% receiving relief food (Citydata.com, 2013). The village has experienced growth in its population in the last few years. The population was at 7, 400 people in 1990, which had increased to 13, 100 in 2000. In 2005, the population of this village had gone up to 18, 300 (Citydata.com, 2013). Community vitality ` The community encompasses black, white, and Indian residents. The estimated number of the various groups interacting in this village is: majority white, and other minority groups, including blacks, Asians, and Latino (Citydata.com, 2013). The number of individuals who have attained higher education to Bachelor’s degree level is approximated to 6.9%, which is comparatively lower than that of New York City; 32.8% (Citydata.com, 2013). ...Windshield Assessment Boundaries .7 The boundaries for this neighborhood are mainly physical with commercial streets; the main roads being New Hampshire avenue, the 495 beltway, and route 29. It is known as the Hillandale and white oak neighborhood. The prominent apartment complexes in this community are “the chateau apartments,” “the Avery Apartments,” and “the White Oak Apartments. The economic boundaries of this community are distinct with the back roads consisting of higher income independent housing while the frontline buildings happen to be low-middle income apartment complexes and town houses. Housing and Zoning 1 The age of the housing ranges from the 1990s to the 1980s. The buildings are evenly spread throughout the small communities. Most of the housings are apartment complexes or townhouses with a few roadside independent housing. These houses are multifamily dwellings, mostly with brick and wood exteriors, the traditional housing style. The lawns and surroundings are well groomed without any disrepair. They have roadside parking in front of the apartments, and they seem to be very crammed in one specific apartment complex (Avery apartments). There seem to be vacant apartments as evidenced by the “now leasing” board displayed, but there aren’t any houses on sale. There aren’t any open drainage ditches or gutters. There are appropriate streetlights and sidewalks...

...Windshield Survey for Zip Code 77004 Eugene Harris NUR/405 Healthy Communities: Theory And Practice November 28th, 2011 Beth Meadows Community health nursing has become a focal point in healthcare since the 1960s-70s when the civil right movement shifted the goal from a charitable concept to a political commitment in order to rectify racial injustices of the past (Stanhope and Lancaster, 2008). Many programs came about with the goal of addressing inequalities in the delivery of healthcare based upon social-economical status. Nurse practitioners then became an important factor in the delivery of healthcare, thereby affecting services offered in community health clinics which improved local accessibility to healthcare. (Stanhope and Lancaster, 2008). Many dynamic changes occurred since then with nurses making important contributions in disease prevention and health promotion in the community which countered the escalating costs of acute hospital care. The definition of a community, in simplicity, is a group of people who live in the same area, or the area in which they live. Unfortunately, this definition does not completely explain what a community is. A community would be individuals who share the same space and interact with each other either directly or indirectly via mechanisms or environment. A community is more than a cluster of individuals, it also will be constructed of families and aggregates (persons with many commonalities) that are interdependent or whose...
