Today’s mainstream feminist perception is white feminism. White feminism silences, dismisses, and rejects Women of Color’s (WoC) struggles and issues. White feminism is the center of the media while it continues to ignore intersectionality and privileges whiteness. Meanwhile, WoC address women’s rights by battling the patriarchy and its connection to racism and sexism within their own communities. Feminists of color are silenced by the dominant form of feminism, mainstream feminism, when it is seen as the primary narrative of feminist theories. White feminism silences WoC when white feminists dismiss the systemic racism WoC face, generalize WoC’s experiences of misogyny as the same misogyny white women face, and ignores the role that whiteness plays in society.

First, when white feminists advocate for feminist issues, such as sexual assault and harassment, healthcare, hate crimes, and the wage gap, they never mention how these issues affect WoC, specifically, on a higher level. For example, numerous white feminists point out the sad reality of the wage gap that persists between men and women and aim to close said gap. What they fail to recognize is that gender is not the only issue--race factors in too. According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), on average, white women earn 78% of a white man’s dollar, Black women earn 64% of a white man’s dollar, and Latinx and Hispanic women earn as low as 54% of a white man’s dollar. White feminists ignore the very true fact that WoC face misonigy at a much more intense level than white women.
