Going through experiences and changing one’s environment can lead to a person finding his or her own identity. They may physically dissociate to spend more time with self while searching or changing their own identities. As Christopher McCandless does in Jon Krakauer’s essay, “Selections from Into the Wild,” where McCandless decides to get away from his normal life of interacting with people and takes a trip to Alaska on its own. He goes to this unplanned trip to Alaska without having any clue of hiking or the environment in the woods and does not rightfully prepare for this trip. Existing his real world and entering into this solitary world on its own is dissociation as Martha Stout discusses in her essay, “When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning, It Was Friday.” Stout …show more content…
Their minds enter and exit into this dissociated state, causing their brain to not be mentally in their reality. In another essay, Leslie Bell speaks about splitting one’s identities in her essay, “Selections From Hard To Get: Twenty-something omen and the Paradox of Sexual Freedom.” She defines splitting as a binary thinking where people think in as black or white terms making decisions about their choices of identified and pursuit of desires based on either/or options. In Bell’s essay, she describes how young women choose to split when attempting to find a sense of self and choose their identity of being either a “bad girl” or a “good girl.” Bell’s patients, Jayanthi and Alicia choose their identities based on the psychological mechanism of splitting. Dissociating from a social environment to a solitude environment leads to learning more of oneself and one’s own identity where he or she can choose their own identity. As well with going through dissociation makes the person to face his or her own past in order to move on with their

...there are levels of truth. These variant levels range from more to less true, based on how interpretive one concept is over the other. In “Homo religiousus,” Karen Armstrong delves into two classifications of truth, the symbolic and the logical truth, and provides examples that corroborate her beliefs. In “When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning It Was Friday,” Martha Stout insinuates that the truths, Armstrong terms rational, conceptual and logical, are being influenced by the symbolic nature that is built into any “meaning-seeking creature[’s]” biology (Armstrong 5). An example of a meaning-seeking creature is Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens are the symbolic species. The ability that a meaning-seeking creature possesses, to understand, stems from a foundation of symbols. When defining truth, the idea that everything is made out of symbols has to be accounted for, and when regarding symbols, nothing can actually be concretely true. Therefore, there is no absolute truth, but rather there are conditions that can qualify different concepts as true, based on their levels of trueness, such as maintaining a unified consciousness, the mechanics of beliefs, language, and the...

Martha Stout's When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning, It Was Friday

...Some consider a healthy mental sanity key to balance in self yet the most intelligent human minds of history were labeled insane. With the infinite number of circumstances and knowledge, the brain, as the operating system, defines individuals through their memories and awareness. Without either, one’s reality may be significantly impacted emotionally, psychologically, and physically. Clinical psychologist Martha Stout, author of “When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning, It Was Friday”, discusses a widely common “issue” that affects the psychological and sometimes even physical aspects of the mind. Dissociation is the disconnection of the mind and sometimes body that often results from trauma. It creates an atmosphere of uncontrollable unawareness that...

Dissociation Is Normal

...Expository Writing 101: Section EA Professor Morrone Dissociation is Normal Dissociation is when an individual mentally spaces out in order to not remember or remove themselves from a situation. The dissociation can be triggered by anything at any point in time and is often related to a traumatic experience. Individuals who dissociate intensely usually do not know that they are dissociating, and many who do seek psychiatric help. Anyone can dissociate and in her essay “When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning, It was Friday,” Martha Stout, a psychologist, speaks about her successful, ordinary, normal patients who dissociate due to traumatic experiences. Society perceives individuals who seek psychiatric assistance to be “abnormal,” but Stout challenges this concept by illustrating how her patients defy this generalization. Therapy is not just for “insane” individuals because Stout’s patients are intellectual individuals who carry through conventional lifestyles. Society labels individuals who acquire psychiatric help as irregular simply because the individuals seek the therapy. Seeking therapeutic help is the first step towards fixing personal problems that cannot be fought alone. Everyone has issues that are difficult to face on their own; in Stout’s patients’ cases, the issues are severe episodes of dissociation that hinder their everyday routines. One patient in particular, named Julia, is a successful producer of documentary films. As a child, Julia...

...Xavier Rodriguez, the other Expos 101 Assignment # 2 F.D. When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning, It Was Friday Professor: Debra Keates 10/7/12 Gone With the Wind There are a number of systems that are identified by science. The ecosystem is complex, involving all living things and highlighting their interdependence. The human system, while smaller in scale is equally intricate. There is a mind and body connection that each person has, however, numerous people lack the ability to make simple connections. In Caroline Fraser’s “Rewilding North America,” she describes how animals are becoming extinct and their struggle to survive. Similarly, in Martha Stout’s “When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning, It Was Friday,” she writes about encounters she has as a psychiatrist and the way her clients struggle to cope with their past experiences; they too are struggling to survive. Fraser describes the ecosystem while Stout discusses people, but both are aiming to promote stability, one for well-being and survival, to increase their population, and the other, for the ability to gain control and for their well-being in order to survive. There is a process and usually specific techniques that are necessary in order to regain what is being lost when it comes to the ecosystem and the human system. In 1930 a British botanist “coined the term ecosystem” in order “to define the complex interrelationships between plants, animals, and microorganisms and the physical elements they interact with—rocks...

So you know Miss Caldwell had us write this essay about a time that we failed in life. Which it wasn’t impossible for me to do because I can think of many times that I’ve failed in the life. The hard part is putting this story into 5 paragraphs. Let me remind you we were told about it on Tuesday and its Friday today. I had started off the essay two different times and I got it going but couldn’t find a way to keep it going to last 5 paragraphs. So I was like forgetting it I’m not doing that essay but of course you know I play sports and my coach does not play about bad grades. Also I don’t want any grades like that...

Trauma Is In Control

...On many occasions, due to certain traumas in our childhood, our mind forgets to mentally keep up with the events occurring in the present because its is still being traumatized. It is almost as if the traumatic event still authorizes over the mind and triggers the mind to function only when necessary. Stout writes “Because children dissociate readily even in ordinary circumstances, when they encounter traumatic situations, they easily split their consciousness into pieces, often for extended periods of time. The self is put aside and hidden,” (430). One can interpret from this quote that many times when trauma occurs during childhood, it can cause that child to truly hide who they are and ultimately shut down. Hence said that, if a child begins to become unauthentic at such a small age at which they are still developing, they will most likely in the future will have trouble in finding who they truly are. Many psychologists would call this learned helplessness. Learned helplessness is when an individual who has been exposed to the same trauma variously that they cannot escape that stimuli. Learned helplessness implies that since the individual does not have control of the situation, they can be forced to behave in a helpless manner in which they are compelled to give up their control. For example, Julia’s abuse began as a child and this as a result caused her to not truly live her life to the fullest. It seemed as if she...

Poem Analysis: Those Winter Sundays

...Robert Hayden 1913-1980 Those winter Sundays Sundays too my father got up early And put his clothes on in the blueblack cold, Then with cracked hands that ached From labor in the weekday weather made Banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him. I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking. When the rooms were warm, he’d call, And slowly I would rise and dress, Fearing the chronic angers of that house, Speaking indifferently to him, Who had driven out the cold And polished my good shoes as well. What did I know, what did I know Of love’s austere and lonely offices? Poem “Those Winter Sundays” is wrote by Robert Hayden, generally seen as a crafted lyric on a universal theme---paternal love, describing a past day and showing a present reverence for author’s father. The title “Those Wither Sundays” emphasizes the time background. It is Sundays, not Tuesdays or Fridays. Sundays are days at home, days completely belongs to ourselves, days that we see our families the most. Hayden recalls the past and realizes how much he had to thank his father. It was a normal Sunday in winter when the author was a little boy; his father got up early, made the fire with his “cracked hands”, woke him up and polished shoes for him. The theme is presented directly and explicitly through every rich physical detail. The poem doesn’t use a masculine pronoun; it sounds more like a woman’s. Through the choice of the gender of voice, I can see the speaker is a soft and sensitive man...

After waking up from a night filled with dreams of soaking up some sunshine on sandy beaches, I turned to my alarm clock to see what time it was. The blinking screen read 5:53 AM, June 3, 2017. So I rolled out of bed, and got dressed in some comfortable clothes. I was filled with excitement and nervous energy while I devoured a nutritious breakfast of blueberry oatmeal before proceeding to finish getting ready. “Abby! C’mon! We have to go or you’re gonna be late!” yelled my mother, who is a tall woman in her forties with short, flaxen hair and greenish-gray eyes. “I’m brushing my teeth! Be down in a minute!” I called...

Going Away: the Dominant Strategy

...worlds are purely in our heads and can only be entered by the individuals who created them. Upon entering their mental reality, a person can experience what appears on the outside to look like a detachment from the common physical reality; they cannot consciously function in two realities simultaneously. Some people experience these detachments only briefly, and live most of their lives mentally focused on the physical reality. In “When I woke up Tuesday Morning, It was Friday,” Martha Stout attempts to explain the excessive mental detachment a number of her therapy patients experience, and the reasons for their prolonged escapes to their mental realities. In his Selection From Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer investigates the travels of a man named Chris McCandless, attempting to explain McCandless’s decision to escape into the Alaskan wilderness in an attempt to go as far away from modern civilization as possible. Juhani Pallasmaa argues that one’s senses have great effects on their interpretation of the reality they are in; his argument brings up the question of whether both author’s escapees did not simply feel a lack of belonging to the realities they were originally in, and therefore decided to escape. “Going away” is the escape method an individual uses to move from consciously being in an unsatisfying reality to being in a different, fulfilling one.s To understand this concept, we must first understand what a reality is. A reality is a unique set of surroundings one perceives...

Identity After Traumatic Experiences

...Conrad Jorge November 21, 2010 Identity after Traumatic Experiences Most of us have experienced or seen the effects of trauma, whether we experienced it first hand or though a shared experience that struck close to home. Trauma is unavoidable, the result of experiencing something that is too difficult to cope with. In “Selections from Losing Matt Shepard”, Beth Loffreda discusses the murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie Wyoming and it’s traumatic effect on the university and community as a whole. She focuses heavily on the idea of identity, both that of the individual and the shared identity of the community after the traumatic event of his death. Trauma is of particular interest to Martha Stout, author of “When I Woke up on Tuesday, It was Friday”. She questions idea of sanity and whether we can truly call ourselves sane. She uses examples of her patients to discuss the effects of trauma on a person’s memory, feelings, and ultimately their identity. In “Into the Wild”, Jon Krakauer implies some of these same concepts with the story of Chris Candles and his travels in the Alaskan wilderness. Through out the story Chris seems to be searching for his own identity and seemingly trying to cope with damage and after effects of childhood trauma. Trauma as personally experienced or shared through a community causes a disconnection between individual and shared identity, significantly damaging and profoundly affecting our self and shared perceptions, feelings, and opinions of ourselves...
