1. FLC allows us to view the multiple entrances and exits that individuals make within the family of origin. It helps depict not only the changes in the structure of the family, but also insights into emotional transactions in the family status. Associate with FST and Satir’s mobile model, there must be changes and imbalance of homeostasis when a new system is formed. Those changes include changes in roles, which lead to rule changes, as well as changes in boundaries. According to SI, all those changes bring in individual meanings to couple relationships. Associate with the Circular Causality model, in order to balance the system, the loop has to be broken. That is why we must establish marital roles and marital boundaries. It is also important to manage our financial properties, and foster a healthy emotional climate. It is also challenge of blending culture and religion in marriage. Interracial marriage indicates partners are of different races while interfaith marriage indicates partners are from different religions. 2. 3. In the beginning of the movie, Katie mentioned a plastic spoon that the couple cared so much. She didn’t know when the spoon became just a spoon. We can tell that she cared so much about it not because of its physical value but the meaning and history behind it. The S.I theory tells us that the entire identity of a couple is based on meaning. And that’s what makes their relationship so distinct from others’. Every time when they see the spoon, it reminds their first anniversary, the sweet time when they shared food at the park. That is a symbolic meaning which distinct her family from others. 4. From the movie, the primary role of the wife is a responsible mom, and the primary role of the husband is a carefree dad. The spouse did not share the same meanings concerning their family roles. Every time when there was a conflict, the wife complained he never listened, and she had to do every single thing in the house. She has taken enough. The husband complained she always took him as a third child; there was no more interconnection between them. They did not share the same meaning concerning their roles. Words responsible and carefree meaning differently to them. When Katie was taking all the responsibilities of taking care children, and the family, Ben looked at it as a disconnection with him. And when he was trying to make interconnections, she thought he was carefree. 5. “Six people in bed” was a good example of IFT. They were talking and laughing about all the therapies that they had visited. It was like a turning point for their relationship; there were some interconnection between them. Then here came the voice from Katie’s parents saying that everything happened too fast. At the same time the voice from Ben’s parents saying that there was nothing wrong of going fast or saving this relationship. Then conflict happened again, they made everything worse. Marriage is never about a male plus a female, but a family of origin plus a family of origin. Those voices are their family of origins. The relational culture they created was transmitted from one generation to next. 6. There are 5 types of destructive conflict. When words we said does not line up with our nonverbal behavior, it is denial. In the movie, when the wife was saying “I’m fine!” she was actually upset about his husband. When a person attempts to cover up expressed emotion, it is called disqualification. In the movie, Katie got mad on their way to take children to the summer camp, because it was already late and everybody else was making fun of some house on their way. After she yelled at them, she tried to make fun of that house to cover her anger, but it did not work. When we take anger or frustration out on someone other than who we are mad at is called displacement. Towards the end of the movie, Ben almost yelled at his friends while they were having dinner at a nice restaurant, he was not mad with his friends, but his own marriage. When we choose silent treatment, act out anger through lack of interaction with each other is called disengaged. Throughout the movie, we see the couple fight with each other first, then Katie started to use the silent treatment; she completely ignored everything that Ben said to her. The other type of destructive conflict is pseudomutuality, appear close and as no conflict exists, yet anger always at the surface. In the movie, every time in front of the children the couple chose to cover up their anger, pretended that nothing had happened to their relationship. 7. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is: criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewall. Criticism is when we say “you…” instead of say “I…” in an argument. In the movie, whenever Ben said “You always pick up on little things!” and Katie said “You never listen!” That is criticism. Both of them became very defensive when they expect to be hurt. There was always criticism, defense, criticism, and defense. The cycle had become a habit to them, and the reason was they did not share the same meaning on many things. Once this criticism/defense pattern goes even deeper, and all you can think of your partner is negative, the relationship has reached to contempt phase. Overtime, mutual contempt spills into every area, eroding every aspect of the relationship. In the movie, there were times that all they did was fighting to each other and whatever they said or did was devalued to that other person. Everything went from discontent to all out hatred. 8. The first stage of relationship deterioration is when criticism and defense becomes a established pattern. According to CC model, it is hard to change unless the loop is broken. When a couple reaches this stage, they tend to be emotionally disconnected. Referring to FST and Olsen’s model, relational culture goes down, disclosure goes down, trust, respect, and intimacy also goes down. Then we will see de-escalation of intimacy in a relationship. Everything we think about our partner becomes negative, and hatred. We start to collect evidence but not ready to share with public yet. The relational culture and intimacy continue to decrease. When we get contempt and stonewall phase when we completely shut off communication and interaction, the relationship has emotionally done which can be way before the physical separation happens. All those push the couple goes on to dyadic phase and social phase. The system is imbalance, the meaning, role, rules start to change. And at the end, is the graving dressing, the relationship is completely done. In the movie, we saw the couple had gone the first couple of phases of relationship deterioration. Once the criticism and defense had become a pattern in their relationship, their disclosure to each other dropped, Ben moved out to a hotel. When he went back to the house to pick up his shirt, he rang the door bell instead of use his key. We can see there was a role change, and that led to a behavior change. Both of them tried the silent treatment, because they got tired of fighting with each other all the time. And Ben moved into an apartment which was a more permanent place than a hotel. However, that did not lead to the stonewall phase. They never completely shut off; they still talked to each other even though it was hard sometimes. 9. As the couple went through the process of relationship deterioration, their roles changed from a married couple to a separated couple. And it led to a behavior change. Katie got Ben’s shirts ready for him to pick up, but since they no longer live together she did not know where to put those shirts. They ended up on the stair handrail. Same to Ben, when he stood in front of their house, he wanted to open the door with his key just like he normally would do. But he paused and rang the doorbell, because his role changed. Roles changing always lead to rules changing. Katie used to be the responsible one and took care of everything. Now her role had changed, she did not have to take care of Ben like her third child any more. She no longer had that expectation of Ben to take all the responsibility. Their boundaries had changed. Overtime they were fighting to each other, mutual contempt spills into every area, and most likely ended up in bad. The boundaries between love, intimacy, stress, conflicts disappeared. And every single conflict affected their sexual life. During the process, the interconnection between had changed as well. They used to be busy all the time, but there were always some interconnections there to bond the family together as a whole. When they were fighting to each other all the time, Ben said that he did not want Katie to center him and paying all her attention to him, but a look, to let him know that they were still on the same side. And Katie also noticed that it had been a long time that they did not make an eye contact. “Yes, we are busy, but when we finally get time, we afraid there is nothing there when we look each other in the eye.” she said.

...Sasha Klaeb WMST 101 7 May 2013 Assignment 4: Women and Work Question 1, The Glass Escalator: In “The Glass Escalator,” Christine Williams studies the way men are treated and their experiences when working in female dominated occupations, and finds that there exists a glass escalator for men working in these jobs. First, although Williams acknowledges that the proportion of men and women in the labor force is approaching parity, there still exists significant job segregation relating to gender. Both men and women are relegated to single sex occupations, meaning that they work in jobs that society deems more appropriate for men and women. What Williams does in this paper is different from other studies because rather than focusing on women in male dominated occupations and the barriers they face, she studies the underrepresentation of males in predominantly “female” occupations. She examines four typically female dominated occupations: nursing, librarianship, elementary school teaching and social work, and studies the implications of men working in female occupations. From these studies, she finds that unlike females in male dominated jobs, men do not face any discrimination and are in fact promoted and move up the ladder at a much faster pace than women. As one employee put it, there is a preference for men in these female occupations. Williams found that the more female dominated the job or specialty was, the greater the preference for men. The glass escalator...

Women and Gender Studies: Process Paper on Collaboration Project

...Women and Gender Studies: Process Paper on Collaboration Project Daquille Barzey-Ferguson Mary Ellen Schmider Introduction to Women's Studies: Process Paper on Collaboration Project 12/01/2014 I want to start off by saying that WMST 200 was a very great course and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was a very beneficial learning experience and I have taken away so much from it. Our professor Mary Ellen Schmider was extremely helpful and her assignments were always knowledgeable and rewarding. They really opened my mind to seeing the world through a woman’s perspective. This course educated me on the aspects of the modern day woman and some of the struggles they still face. I would highly recommend this to course to people that I know. One thing in particular that challenged and was kind of new to me was the Collaboration project. It promoted classmate interaction and teamwork, which are great factors to have. This assignment was a great way to interact with our fellow classmates. Reflecting back on this courses collaborative project it was quite rewarding. At first I was a little worried about working with people I do not really know through the computer. How we are supposed come together and complete this assignment, but it turned out for the better. At first there was a little confusion as to what were our particular roles of the assignment but through outstanding teamwork we prevailed. It was a good learning experience. Our group consisted of five outstanding counterparts...

...TYe WST 200 December 10, 2012 What I've Learned and Have Taken Away From This Course My initial reason for taking the Women's Studies course was because one of my friends who took this class, in the previous semester strongly recommended it to me. He only told me bits and pieces of the course but as he explained you could see the passion in his eyes as we engaged in conversation. He had nothing but good things to say and he claimed that, "After this course you'll respect women way more." "Impossible" I thought, because I already respected women tremendously because I see their daily hardships and how they are portrayed them in the media. My major is psychology, thus knowing how and why women act the way they act really assisted me with helpful information related to my studies. If I wrote everything that I've learned in this course it would be well over a page. Thus, I am only sharing three of the most important pieces of information that I not only took away from this class but also applied to my everyday life. The most important information (pertaining to me) that I have learned in this class was the Power & Control wheel. The same day you issued out those papers to the class and I brought it home to my girlfriend to see if I did any of those negative actions in the wheel. I did that for two main reason: 1. I knew I didn't do any of those things (in my eyes) so I wanted to see what was her point of view. 2. To prevent it from ever happening (even if its genuinely...

...upper portion of the equilateral-triangular structure “is subverted in favor of holding on to the status and the exclusivity that the group has achieved.” This means, whoever reaches the top, will forever feast on power and those who fall short will suffer power hungry famine. The struggle is vicious and consuming, and its effect is seemingly that of a repetitive cycle with no escape. Power Plays: Six Ways the Male Corporate Elite Keeps Women Out is the context our eyes focus on, the men are at the top and the women are at the bottom. The reinforcement that is implemented upon women comes in the forms of prejudices (personal and social), emotional constraints, and lack of strength between inter-gender loyalties. These sort of socially regulated predicaments keep immobility between power levels in place and prevent the upward growth of women in power from happening. The problems that hinder movement within he hierarchy are truthful; they exist and have for many years. The article dates 2005, which is forward enough in time to hold psychological studies that can be used as references when claiming the realities. For example, on page 436, “It has been well documented that managers like to hire people who look like themselves. In most of corporate America, that still means white and male.” Then Burk continues with the results that had come of this, that in order to prevent discrimination, laws had been passed (even though there are still ways around them). Power elites are those hard-nosed...

...identity of being male or female. The second we are born, behaviors of others and how we are treated are based on that fact alone. If we are female, we are more likely to be dressed in pink and ruffles. If we are male, we are more likely to be dressed in blue. Being born male or female carries a lot of preconceived notions about how we are supposed to be treated, dressed, and raised. Being feminine is different than being female, just as being male is different from being male. That is Leach’s main point I think. Just because we are male doesn’t mean we are masculine, but in every culture being male comes with its own expectations of being masculine. Men are violent and get rage easily. Men abuse women and rape them. A female murderer is a rare thing to come by, or so we think, because women are peace keepers and they are sweet and kind. Men are the bullies and the mean people. “There was, however, no correlation between testosterone and rated masculinity or attractiveness” (Peters, Simons, and Rhodes, 2008). There is a set of behaviors and rules that one is supposed to follow being a male. Leach also specifies that theories of masculinity must take into account the power roles that come with being masculine, otherwise the theories are incomplete. “Unlike the biological state of maleness, masculinity is a gender identity constructed socially, historically and politically. It is the cultural interpretation of maleness, learnt through participation in society and its institutions”...

She watches the T.V. as half naked girls dance in the background of male singers. She picks up her phone to get on Instagram where she scrolls through images of famous women like Rhianna and Kim Kardashian who post scantily clad images of their bodies. Brittany thinks to herself, “I wish that I looked like these girls, maybe if I looked more like them the boys at school would like me more”. Brittany’s mother gets home from work and puts dinner on the dining room table. Brittany sits down and eats only a portion of her meal because in the back of her mind she is still feeling as though her own body is inadequate, she could probably lose more weight and if only she had bigger boobs and longer legs, maybe then she would feel better about herself. She lies in bed that night and wishes that she had a better body so that she could feel beautiful and happy. If only she knew that thousands of other girls were feeling the same way, maybe she would realize that the issue isn’t her own body- the issue is the cultural emphasis on female sexualization that has become a norm in our society. Unfortunately girls all over the world are struggling with self-confidence related to...

Hedda Gabler and "The Trapped Woman"

...further from what it seems. Henrik Ibsen, the writer of Hedda Gabler, seems to not be telling us the personal story of the woman Hedda Tesman, but showing us the faults of society for that time period in terms of the roles of women. “The Trapped Woman”, is a term I will use to describe the role of “The Woman” in the late 19th Century. Henrik Ibsen appears to be showing us through Hedda’s life that no matter the apparent strength or background of a woman during the 19th century, they are still trapped in a way which forbids them to be who they truly are. Hedda Tesman, as described early on in the play, due to her background and personality, should in no way be anything but in complete control over her life. As stated by Aunt Julle, “General Gabler’s daughter. What a life she had in the general’s day!” (Ibsen). This statement in the beginning of the play almost immediately foreshadows her unhappy life in her current state. Due to the roles of women for that time period, she is just the representation of all women in her situation at the time. Women in the 19th century had very minimal rights. When a woman becomes married, the rights of woman are immediately given to their spouse, which in Hedda’s case is Jürgen Tesman. One can make the assumption that for women in the 19th century, marriage is actually closely related so slavery, in that the woman is owned by the man, in every way possibly (Buckner). Hedda’s character shows us of a woman seemingly aware of these truths, and...

Roman women in ancient times, though discriminated against on ground of gender but was seen as the most liberated in the world of that time. When looking at the sources for ancient roman women many questions are asked and considered, such as, what was the role of roman women in their society? Were they considered citizens who had personal freedoms, or were given no or little education? Were there roles really important to society? Whenever we go through the records of roman women's status in society there is always a great consternation. Several sources or journals which mention the roles of women in ancient roman society, several works which mention them as wives and mothers. There are sources however limited they may be which delve deeper into the scope of these questions, which give a glimpse into the lives of roman women. Why Are Girls Really Indirect Aggression?

...you ever wonder why girls are so mean to each other? At a certain age they will develop an attitude towards other women called “indirect aggression”, which is an expression that women will show when they’re sizing each other up. The aggression certainly persists throughout their lives from elementary to college, and then, the workplace. This hostility technique doesn’t go away like some type of celebrity crush, or going to the bathroom in groups, women never quite grow out of this. As they grow older, they will not change, except that they acquire the skills to bully each other under the radar. Yes, women are too mean to each other. From what I experienced, they are the...
