With this project it serves to reinforce the cumulative concepts that have been taught throughout this semester of Engineering Statics. It has been necessary to research designs, types of wood, and types of adhesive that will create a final result that is consistent with the desired result. Literature Review: The design concept behind a cantilever truss consists of a series of triangles joined together. The strength of these individual triangles, when combined, creates a very strong final result. Triangles are a very important part of many types of construction as they are the “only geometric figure that cannot be pulled or pushed out of shape without actually changing the length of one of its sides” (Bridges - Trusses, n.d.). As well as the advantage of the added strength, truss also do this without much additional weight. These concepts combined allow for trusses to be a very efficient way of adding strength. A cantilevered beam is what of which is supported on one end (usually a fixed support) and end is left...

...Bill Chang HSTAS 482 H. Nam Review Paper With Her Oil Lamp On, That Night Review With Her Oil Lamp On, That Night is a Korean novel written by Lim Chul-Woo during the times of War in Korea. This short story is written in such a way that readers can relate to the pain that the victims of the Korean War felt. Lim tells the story with such detail so that the readers feel like they are actually there observing. The story opens with a soldier in the company of rebels in the woods outside the town in which he grew up. The town was evacuated more than two months prior, but that night the soldier and his company saw a light. The soldier thought that it could be from his own house due to the fact that it was in the same area and it was the anniversary of the death of his father. He thought to himself that it is his own mother coming back to look for him and to pay her respects to her husband. The story then switches to the viewpoint of the mother of the soldier in the woods. She has taken the risk to return to her village even though it was forbidden for her to return. She was clinging to the hope that her son might return; clinging so much that when she evacuated her town, she did not even board up the windows and doors like much of the rest of the town. Many of the villagers even went as far as to burn down the homes that they were leaving behind. Lim continues the story in the mother’s point of view. She is in her home with meager portions of food for the tribute to her deceased...

...Tides and the Moon Name AST/101 Date Teacher Tides and the Moon I was recently tasked with examining the relationship between the Earth’s moon and the Earth’s tides. I took that to mean literally: how are the tide levels of Earth’s bodies of water affected by the Moon? When approaching this question I want to do so with the scientific method in mind. The scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge (Goldhaber & Nieto, 2010). The scientific method is a way to ask and answer scientific questions by making observations and doing experiments. It is also a good tool when we are searching for cause and effect relationships in nature. We already know the primary question being asked: How are the bodies of water on Earth affected by the Moon? To begin to answer our primary question we next ask: what causes tides? There are several kinds of tides. The ones that break upon a beach every 10 seconds to a minute are caused by sea level disturbances out in the ocean produced by such things as storms. Also the various circulation currents of sea water can have velocity components directed toward the land which will bring water up onto the beach. As this water travels toward the beach from deep water to shallow water, its amplitude will increase until it finally “breaks” as a full-fledged breaker, suitable for surfing, etc. Underlying this minute to minute activity is a slower...

...Mackenzie Parham Art 1030 – R62 Art Review African Art Brooks Museum is well known in Memphis as an art museum filled with many painting, artifacts and exhibits that are ever changing. I decided to make a trip to see the new exhibits, which include “Looking at Women,” photography by Whitten Sabbatini and “Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt.” Along with these exhibits are their permanent collections, whom which they add to yearly, they include paintings, sculptures, and artifacts from the American to 1990, European to 1900, Modern and Contemporary, Ancient Art and African Art. I have been to this Museum many times in the past and one of the collections of Art that I always gravitate towards is the African Art. This collection of Art consists of artworks from Sudan, Central Africa and West Africa. These objects consisted of ceremonial masks made of wood, feathers, plant fibers, beads, fur, cloth, copper and other miscellaneous objects, Wooden figured called Pounders, religious scrolls and books and other artifacts pertaining to their culture. In this exhibit contained many masks. Two of the mask that was most interesting to me was a mask called the “Elephant Society Mask” and “Bwoom Helmet Mask.” The Elephant Mask was made by canvas embroidered with beads. It was from the Bamileke kingdom. Men that were members of this kingdom called Kuosi wore these masks to major festivals and royal funerals, the mask represent the royal elephant. The Bwoom Mask is from...

...The Nature versus Nurture Debate Sharon Turzai Western Governors University The Nature versus Nurture Debate Nature versus nurture, a debate of the influence of genetics compared to a persons’ environment has been, and continues to be a debate of scholars over many years. On one side of the argument there stands “heritability, a measure of the degree to which a characteristic is estimated to be influenced by heredity” (Wood, Wood, & Boyd, 2011, p. 247). The individuals’ environment or how, where and with whom the person was raised would be the other side of the discussion. On one hand, some believe that nature, the genetics of a person is what decides how a person shall end up in life. Many have argued that intelligence, personality, and even sexual orientation are decided by a person’s genetics. On the other hand, some have stated that it is the individuals’ environment, or nurture that molds the person. Some of course argue that both genetics and environment make up a persons’ destiny. “Today, most psychologists agree that both nature and nurture contribute to intelligence, but they continue to debate the relative contributions of these two factors” (Wood et al., 2011, p. 247). There has been much controversy regarding the nature versus nurture debate. The dispute that develops with the debate comes much from the social and political inequalities that is seems some of the research results in. There are many examples of such issues. Some individuals have...

...Team Collapse at Richard, Wood, Hulme, LLP EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SITUATION ANALYSIS Established in 1998 by Chris Richard, Gemma Wood and Lauren Hulme, Richard, Wood and Hulme LLP (“RWH”) is a financial services firm offering audit and taxation services to its clients with a mission of delivering excellent service and improving clients’ internal controls. Being a “team player” is an essential trait of a RHW employee because client audits are completed by teams. The client fee is flat, so the more efficiently and effectively the team members’ work, the higher the margins the firm realizes. The firm does not tolerate those with poor teamwork behaviors as evidenced by the fact that RWH has terminated only a handful of employees since the firm’s inception, and those terminations were mainly because those individuals were not able to work effectively in teams. The case is set in the Fall of 2008 at the height of the North American financial crisis and at a time when some of RWH’s clients are filing for bankruptcy and others are demanding reductions in audit fees. During this difficult economic time, RWH is opting to maintain existing staffing levels and as a result is losing money. However, RWH views an event scheduled to occur in 2011, the conversion of Canadian financial reporting standards from GAAP to IFRS, as an attractive business opportunity and wants to maintain its current staffing level to take advantage of this future opportunity. During the Fall of...

...(McCullough, 2005, p. 280). It was nearly nine o’clock and The Battle of Trenton was over (Wood, 1990, p.74). In less than an hour’s time, an Army that had been all but officially written off by a far superior force had found new life and proven itself a capable fighting force. The success of the attack on Trenton showed that the Continental Army under the command of General George Washington was capable of meeting and beating a world renowned fighting force in open combat. It also showed to General Washington the vital importance of intelligence operations. Intelligence and a successful military deception operation combined with a lackadaisical intelligence effort from the Hessians showed the American commander how the tide of battle could be turned. Review of the Setting Strategic and Operational Overview The Battle of Trenton happened a year in a half into a war that would last a total of six long years. The American Revolutionary war started in April of 1775 “with the first blood shed at Lexington and Concord near Boston” (McCullough, 2005, p. 7). At that time the American forces were loosely regulated militia. That battle in those small towns in Massachusetts was the catalyst many colonials had been looking for to start their path to independence. By December 1776, the Continental Army had become a professional force with a proper command structure. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean was the nation controlling the most powerful military in the world. The...

...Literature: Symbolism of a Journey Tracy Locke ENG125 Karen McFarland October 7, 2013 Reading a story, a poem, or a play introduces you to an imaginary world (Clugston, W.R. (2010). When reading literature we must enter the imaginary world; enter the world the author is creating. The story “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty in 1941 and the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost in 1916 both use the theme of journey to symbolize life decisions. One speaks of a “Path” the other a “Road” the theme that each of these writings share is presented differently throughout the piece of literature. These two pieces of literature symbolize a journey, through using content, form, style, symbolism and imagination, although used differently in many ways they both are symbolizing a journey through life. The theme in a story is a representation of the idea behind the story (Clugston, W.R.(2010). In the pieces of literature I have chosen, the theme is speaking of journeys, one journey for love and the other life, but both having to make life decisions. The authors took different approaches in showing the reader the journey, the life decisions that had to be made. Both works have characters making a journey. In the poem “The Road Not Taken”, the narrator has been traveling and has reached a point where the road divides. The narrator is a traveler. Likewise, in the short story “A Worn Path”, the main character is on a trip to town. She is travelling from home through the pines...

...A woman running very slowly in the woods, only wearing nothing but a sheer nightgown or just a bra and panties, is being chased in the forest by a large masked man bearing a axe who doesn’t seem to be going that fast but despite this the woman is still caught and brutally murdered before the eyes of the audience. Anyone who has seen a horror movie has probably seen a scene just like this one and it’s always set up and ends the same way. The victim is always a woman and murderer is most of the time a man. The case in a lot of works with violence in them is that women tend to murdered in more horrific ways than men, to terrify the audience to the fullest extent, as if they wouldn’t be terrified of a man dying the same way. But a lot of fans in...
