...English 101 October 1, 2012 The Woods The tops of the trees were visible from my childhood home, yet they seemed so far away. A trio of neighborhood pre-teen boys, including me, would frequently make the trek to the woods to quench our thirst for adventure. No matter our agenda for the day, the woods would always accommodate. We would start our journey by walking across a perpetually soggy horse pasture, dodging land mines left by the horses. The smells of fresh cut hay and horse manure followed in our wake. Our first stop in the woods was always the stream that ran the entire length. With a running start, a young boy could almost jump the width of the stream, landing a few feet short on the opposite bank. We would descend the bank and hop from rock to rock, trying to keep our tennis shoes dry. When that failed, we trod down the center of the stream, lifting up flat rocks to uncover unsuspecting crayfish. We did not know that people actually ate these peculiar looking creatures. In the winter, we would compete to see who could stand on the ice of the frozen stream the longest. The stream would always win, as the ice gave way with a resounding crack. We walked home with heavy feet, dragging rock-hard pant legs frozen up to the knees. Older kids rode their motorcycles in the woods and adjacent field, as the high-pitched engine whine and smells of two cycle oil mixed with gasoline filled the air. Eventually, my neighborhood trio had motorcycles of our own, and our spinning...

...(disambiguation) and Heartwood (disambiguation). For small forests, see Woodland. For wood as a commodity, see Lumber. For other uses, see Wood (disambiguation). Page semi-protected Wood surface, showing several features Wood is a hard, fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. It has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix of lignin which resists compression. Wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees,[1] or it is defined more broadly to include the same type of tissue elsewhere such as in tree roots or in other plants such as shrubs.[citation needed] In a living tree it performs a support function, enabling woody plants to grow large or to stand up by themselves. It also mediates the transfer of water and nutrients to the leaves and other growing tissues. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber. The Earth contains about one trillion tonnes of wood, which grows at a rate of 10 billion tonnes per year. As an abundant, carbon-neutral renewable resource, woody materials have been of intense interest as a source of renewable energy. In 1991, approximately 3.5 billion cubic meters of wood were harvested. Dominant uses were for furniture and building construction...

...attending to Secrets of Wood class. First, I felt sorry for my friend for going to the Forest Science Exhibition Hall. I thought it was a place I would just read about the explanation of the plants. However, the Forest Science Exhibition Hall was like a park, where we could look around and sit on benches provided for us. There were even some people who have been taking a nap on those benches. The weather was so good and the trees were so green, it was really beautiful and a lot to see. There were a lot of families and children who came to look around this place. So it felt like I just came to walk around in a beautiful scenery. The place was pretty big than I thought. There were some buildings inside and there were a lot of trees and flowers to look around in outside. First I began walking around outside. It was nice to walk around and look through the trees in between spring and summer weather. All the flowers bloomed and the trees were green enough. There was a sign in front of the plants, which showed the names of each trees and flowers in both English and in Korean. It was interesting to read all those names because I realized that there were so many kinds of plants existing. It is said that in Forest Science Exhibition Hall there are about more than 2000 of types of species planted. After looking around outside the Forest Science Exhibition Hall, I went inside this one building. There were several desks that were all made out of different woods. They all looked different...

...Wood is one of the most widely used materials in the world. For a wood extension project, I decided to extend my plank of wood physically and conceptually. I decided to create a phone from a plank of wood and turn it into a persuasive poster in order to raise awareness of being present, being mindful of everything that the "now" moment contains. Wood is clearly a natural resource. At the spiritual level, trees help people become more aware of the connections with something larger than themselves. In mythology, trees are sometimes portrayed as the abodes of nature spirits. Trees call people to a state of “mindfulness,” where they become better in tune with and more compassionate toward the surroundings. I came across the idea of extending my...

...GOOD AND BAD SIDE OF WOODS Professional golf player Tiger Woods was born in Cyprus, California on December 30, 1975. Woods won the U.S. Masters at Augusta in 1997 with a record score at the age of 21. He was the youngest man and first African American to earn the title. In 2009, Woods took a break from golf and returning in 2010, but as his personal life took a turn for the worse, the golfer was not at the top of his game. In late November, reports surfaced about a tryst between Woods and nightclub manager Rachel Uchitel. Both parties denied a relationship, despite photographic evidence that seemed to indicate otherwise. The golfer remained silent on the matter, and mysteriously dropped out of his charity golf tournament, the Chevron World Challenge. He then announced that he would not be attending any other tournaments in 2009. Due to this problem Woods stop playing golf for a while and he also has lost his endorsement deal with management company, Accenture and was suspended from his Gilette endorsement. But, other companies like Nike, Tag Heuer and EA Sports, continue to stand by Woods. Because they know Wood is still a best golfer in the world. They pushed aside what has Wood done and keep continue on sponsoring him. However, Woods made a return to golf in April of 2010, but the golfer was not quite at the top of his game. His first competition at the 2010 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, ended in a fourth place spot for Woods. Woods made his return to golf after...

...The woods can be spooky at times, but once you get to your destination, it is well worth all the heartache. I agree with the blog writer's stance on this subject that when you first enter the woods you feel vulnerable to all the dangers around you. Page 2 of the blog declares, "It's uncomfortable at first, as if you are naked, and completely out of your normal element." I feel as if this is very accurate description of what the woods feel like at first. Moreover, I don't necessarily agree with everything Bryson says. For example, Bryson describes the woods as "quiet and eery"; this is not always true because there are a multitude of animals that make noises and the sound of rushing water is often very loud. Nevertheless, after you find...

...A high-quality wood filler is an important tool for a wood worker or do-it-yourself person. Wood filler is used to fill empty wood grains, so that a piece of wood can be stained evenly. Waterproof wood filler is also used to repair damaged areas in a wood piece. Wood filler glue generally comes in a small tub and can be purchased in a variety of colors to match the project you're working on. There are several types to choose from. If you're working on a wood project with small voids, a rubbery and pliable type of wood filler is best to use. This filler will stay flexible and move with your piece of wood as it expands or contracts. Other types of waterproof wood filler are made to dry up after you apply it, which is better for larger spaces...

...Wood VS. High density polyethylene (HDPE) Plastic Lumber. This paper is not to persuade the use of either Conventional, or “Green” building materials it is simply a comparison of the pros and cons of your design choices. Wood has been a standard building material for centuries. Craftsmen, suppliers and manufacturers always want to see more wood used in materials and goods. The high market value of a real wood floors, furniture, accents and finishes will always be a selling point in any big purchase. There is something wood; unlike other materials, brings that warm, rich inviting look no matter the application it has been implicated in. Even with the pride of ownership and demand for high price; Wood is also the highly coveted material of choice in the cooking profession when it comes to choosing utensils. Wood of course is an essential material in manufacturing instruments, wither it be jamming on a guitar or playing a musical-toon on an oboe. Also let us not forget all those number 2 pencils destroyed during ones educational career. Even with all these wonderful applications for wood just mentioned in this paragraph and the many more items wood can and still is used for; still cannot help it over-come its true fate in nature. Wood deteriorates. It cracks, it rots, its splinters, it is prone to mildew and mold, the list goes on. Of course one would argue that not all of these negative aspects of wood pertain to all of said items, sure it depends on where, what and...
