Euthyphro

...“A son is impious who prosecutes a father. Which shows, Socrates, how little they know what the gods think about piety and impiety.” (Plato, ND) After which Socrates questions what piety and impiety means. This then spurs the conversation towards their concepts of holiness. 2- Present the three definitions that Euthyphro uses in his response to Socrates, and then explain how Socrates refutes each of Euthyphro’s definitions. The first definition that Euthyphro uses is that piety is doing as he is doing, by persecuting any one that is guilty, whether it is of murder, sacrilege or anything that is similar to that. He states that impiety is not punishing those that are guilty of murder or sacrilege. Socrates feels that this is not a definition and isn’t dealt with properly. Socrates refutes this by stating those who prosecute are an example of a holy act and not a definition. He thereby urges Euthyphro to give a more general definition that can be identified as a standard that all other holy deeds could be recognized by. The second definition that he gives is that piety is what the gods hold dear and impiety is that which is not dear to them. Socrates is pleased by this general definition and proceeds to first point out that the gods often quarrel, then...

Loyalty In Kite Runner And Beowulf

...Loyalty defines a person’s great devotion to another. These two works of literature integrated this theme of loyalty in both The Kite Runner and Beowulf. Beowulf from the epic poem Beowulf emphasizes the importance of loyalty. Beowulf is extremely loyal, as perceived in his commitment to his king Hygelac, to his entertainer Hrothgar, to his own loyal men, such as Wiglaf, and to his people. In contrast, Hassan from the “Kite Runner” shows loyalty for his friend Amir. It is in Hassan’s letter, years after their separation, that puts Amir on the way to redemption. And so, Hassan saves Amir twice, previously as a boy and later in the future, even after his own death. In both The Kite Runner and Beowulf, the authors express loyalty from friendship and from commitment....

Principle of Morale

...Principles of Morale • Entomology The origin of the word morale comes from the French word "moral" which refers to good conduct. French has two different version of the word--"le moral," which relates to temperament, and "la morale," which refers to morality. The word was first used in 1831 in reference to "confidence" in military matters. • Definition of Morale Morale or esprit de corps is an intangible that refers to the ability of a group of people to maintain confidence in an institution, goal or practice. If a specific group---which can be as large as a nation or the employees of a company, to as small as a neighborhood or family---has faith it is moving in the right direction, then morale is said to be high or good. If the group begins to losing faith, that is when morale becomes low or bad. Morale is not related to "morality" or knowing the difference between right and wrong. Morale is the spirit of active devotion to the persons working together for a common purpose. It is also called (Esprit de corps). It refers to sense of belonging. This fosters the team spirit, i.e. the spirit of working together to achieve objectives effectively. It is the capacity of a group's members to maintain belief in an institution or goal, particularly in the face of opposition or hardship. Morale is often referenced by authority figures as a generic value judgment of the willpower, obedience, and self-discipline of a group tasked with performing duties assigned by...

The 4 Yogas

...and apart from religion. “The word yoga derives from the same root as does the English word yoke; meaning to unite and place under disciplined training”. Americans take this definition literally and only consider the physical aspect of yoga training. This approach leads to a gap in the most enlightening aspects of yoga; spiritual training. Like many of the world’s religions Hinduism has one distinct goal and that is to unite the human spirit with God. Hindu’s believe that there are 4 separate paths to reaching enlightenment and uniting your spirit with God via the spiritual and physical discipline that is yoga. Because of the variety and complexity of the human personality, Hinduism understands that we all approach our spirituality from different points in life. The focus of the four paths is on the strongest aspect of the personality with the ultimate goal of “rendering the surface self-transparent to its underlying divinity; cleansed of its gross impurities”. The four paths of yoga are Jnana Yoga (the path through knowledge), Bhakti Yoga (the path through love), KarmaYoga (the path through work), and Raja Yoga (the path of the psychophysical). Jnana Yoga is considered the yoga for the rational. It is said that Jnana has the strongest reflective element of all of yoga. Jnana yoga uses the rational focus, detached from emotion, to evaluate who we are and how that shapes our experiences. Bhatki Yoga is considered the yoga of love and devotion to God. Because it is considered...

Stereotypes In Sherman Alexie's Superman And Me

...Devotion takes time and commitment, but it comes easy when needed. Sherman Alexie, in the story Superman and Me, discusses his life experience on the Spokane Reservation and defeating the Native American stereotype. He was looked down upon by fellow Native Americans because of his reading talents. “A smart Indian is a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike...We were Indian children who were expected to be stupid,” (Alexie). Being intelligent in this example was wrong, wasn’t the normal standard for an Indian boy. Their reservations view was that they couldn’t do better, couldn’t exceed higher expectations. American students should be devoted to succeeding better than the typical stereotype society has on individuals. They need to strive to succeed past “normal” excellence. Devotion takes time and patience, but taking the time to commit to succeeded will prove to be that best option in the long run. Another example described how he was to accomplish his goal, “I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky,” (Alexie). Sherman Alexie had to be determined and devoted to succeed in being better than the Native American reservation standard. He strived for higher excellency during school and in life outside of school. Refusing to fail speaks many words, it states that people aren’t due for destruction of talent, we are...

Sins of Idolatry, Social Injustice, and Religious Ritualism; the Prophets View

...Liberty University March 07, 2013 Sins of Idolatry, Social Injustice, and Religious Ritualism; the Prophets View Several of the prophets had much to say in regards to idolatry, social injustice, and religious ritualism throughout the Old Testament. Some of these that will be used in this essay are Isaiah, Hosea, Micah, Jonah, and Ezekiel. Their verses will better define the meanings God has on each of these subjects. Let us begin by asking the question; what is idolatry? Merriam-Webster online defines it as: 1the worship of a physical object as a god, or 2immoderate attachment or devotion to something. The first definition is what most individuals think of in regards to idolatry. Stone, wood, brass, and golden statues comes to mind. However, it is the second definition that is more appropriate for a Christian to understand. It is the word “something” that is the key to the definition of idolatry. Anything you put before God is idolatry and is sin. The first two Commandments state: “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make yourself an image in the form of anything… You shall not bow down to them or worship them (Exodus 20:3-5 NIV). The idols of today are too numerous to count. Many people today place more emphasis on sports, possessions, money, television, and electronics, than taking care of their own souls. Jonah warns us of what will come to those who worship idols. He says, “Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for...

Integrity Definition

...Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Warren Buffet said, “In looking for people to hire, look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you” (Anderson, 2012). Integrity is primarily defined as having a strict devotion to principled values (Dictionary.com, n.d.). This definition is abstract in nature. It is true for many situations, but other uses of the word are common. “Integrity” can also be interpreted differently based off of who is doing the interpreting or the specific situation to which the word is applied. For example, some differentiate “integrity” from acting morally, while others treat the two as one in the same (Cox, La Caze, Levine, 2013). It is important to establish these differences in definition in order to comprehend what is being stated or written. Thesis: Integrity is described as remaining whole in mind and body, upholding...

Attributes of Being

... Introduction While Plato had also covered the notions surrounding the properties of being, Aristotle was the first to bring the term transcendental to the context of the attributes of being. Plato offered valuable insight regarding the four transcendental attributes of being. [1] Aristotle shaped the transcendentals in a specific manner and refined his own perspective. Later philosophers also expanded the discussion surrounding the transcendental attributes of being. These transcendentals become significant in the context of theology because they possess a link with Christian theology and unfold in the form of what man desires. For explicating the four transcendental attributes of being, it becomes significant to first explore the definition of an attribute. An attribute falls under the category of that aspect which does not exist in the form of the embodiment but originates from the same. As regards ‘being’, it can only give rise to what is also being and thus, a ‘being’ cannot spawn attributes or properties while discussing these terminologies in a firm manner. Nevertheless, while approaching the subject in a broader manner, an attribute can be defined for a specific perspective on being as long as it applies to each instance of being and overall entities that fall into the category of being. [2] The four transcendental attributes of being and their explanation follows below: The First Transcendental: Unity or Oneness One of the transcendental attributes of being...

Jonah Vs. Amos

...Although Jonah and Amos are regarded as established prophets of the Bible, their incongruity becomes apparent through Jonah’s resistance and unintentional message of mercy in contrast to Amos’s willingness and condemning nature. Even though Amos was “neither a prophet or prophet’s son,” uninvolved with religious institutions, he does not appear to demonstrate any refusal to prophesy. He addresses the people, “Hear this word the Lord has spoken against you” and “Hear tis word, O house of Israel I take up concerning you.” His statements do not downplay the directness of God. Furthermore, Amos speaks to the Israelites soon after having his visions, with immediacy at God’s first command. Conversely, Jonah illustrates absolute aversion...

Collier's the Chaser

...return for the cleaner after they force love. As the story develops, we learn that love cannot be bought. There is symbolism between the term chaser and glove cleaner when the old man says to Alan, “ ‘Call it a glove-cleaner if you like,’ said the old man indifferently. ‘Maybe it will clean gloves. I have never tried. One might call it a life cleaner. Life needs cleaning sometimes’ ” (Collier 1). The symbolization is that the life-cleaner is a poison that some people have returned for to get rid of the love-potion induced person.  The definition of chaser according to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary is “a mild drink taken after hard liquor” (Merriam-Webster.com). The chaser drink reduces the severity of the taste of hard liquor, like the life cleaner, reduces the severity of suffocating relationships. One quote which showcases the double meaning is when the old man says, “ ‘For indifference,’ said the old man ‘they substitute devotion, for scorn, adoration. Give one tiny measure of this to the young lady-its flavor is imperceptible in orange juice, soup, or cocktails-and however gay and giddy she is, she will change altogether. She will want nothing but solitude and you’ ” (2). The old man is revealing that the special mixture will completely change Diana from the moment she ingests it. When Alan goes to see the old man for the potion, he is the one chasing Diana. The story makes us believe that after Diana takes the potion, the roles will switch and Diana will be...

Each person has their own opinion of the definition of good parenting; however, there are a few basic, fundamental suggestions that some may want to consider when faced with child rearing. First and most importantly, a good parent should show love and affection toward their child or children. Secondly, it is also essential that a parent be able to set good examples for their children. Lastly, in order to be an effective parent, a person must learn how to take a break for themselves once in a while. A good parent shows love, is a good role model, and takes cares of their wellbeing. Love and affection is the foundation of a healthy relationship between a parent and their child. This suggestion applies to all parents, it does not matter how old they are, what color they are, where they are from, or if they are male or female. Taking care of a child’s basic necessities and keeping the child safe from harm is, without a doubt, part of the love and affection equation. Love and affection provides a sense of security and worth in a developing child. Being a good role model is also crucial when nurturing a growing human being. Euthyphro

...McLaughlin Socrates is accused for corrupting the young Athenians and not believing in the Gods and is facing trial. Socrates requests that Euthyphro teach him the meaning of piety, when he finds out that Euthyphro is persecuting his father for being impious. Euthyphro gives off attributes instead of the nature of piety. Socrates refutes Euthyphro's responses and persuades him to agree on what Socrates believes. They both agree eventually on piety having to do with justice The concept of holiness emerges into the dialogue from the moment it was known that Socrates was accused for lacking holiness and misrepresenting religious doctrine, and this is why he was facing trial. Socrates ask Euthyphro for the definition of piety and it is when Euthyphro responds the second time telling Socrates that holiness is what is pleasant to the gods, that it comes into notion. Holiness is important in the dialogue not only to prove that Euthyphro was not as wise as he thought but also so Socrates could know the nature of piety and use it to justify himself and his lifestyle. With Euthyphro being a believer of the gods and Socrates not believing in the gods, Socrates criticized Euthyphro's thoughts. Socrates uses elenchos approach with Euthyphro by asking questions of others to try and lead them indirectly to the truth. He is facing trial for this reason, he was accused of this with the young Athenians. When Euthyphro was asked the meaning of piety, he first...
