Work Place Violence

Problem Definition:
It’s the behaviors performed by individuals in order to harm others with whom they work or previously worked, it can occur at or outside the workplace and can range from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and homicide.
Justification of the Problem:
Work place violence is a result of personal and organizational outcomes as individuals may have personal issues (Psychological as depression, anxiety or Post traumatic stress), as for the organizational outcomes it may be due to fear of reoccurrence of an incidence of violence or the fear from the negative thoughts of being attacked regarding past incidence in the same company that you work in.
List of Alternatives: * Enhancement of workplace Security. * Reduce the risk of violence through environmental design and employee training. * Better communication between the employees and the management to enhance loyalty and commitment to the company.
Evaluate Alternatives: 1. Enhancement of Workplace Security
The Security System has to be more efficient, this could be done by re-evaluating the company security plan through increasing the number of cameras and view the hidden places in the building like the stairs or the company store.
Change the Security company and use up-to-date technology gates to enable the guards to detect any unfavorable / illegal material that could enter the building and be used to induce violence in the organization ( e.g. guns, knifes).

2. Reduce the risk of violence through environmental design and employee training
Employees has to be motivated and appreciated in order to give their best in their work , developing a healthy environment between each department and enhance the idea of creating the need to work in teamwork will affect the organization successfully.
Employees have to feel that the company is willing to enhance their skills through giving them trainings that matches their career needs not only what the company needs, the idea of the company to build an organization has to be integrated in the mind of each employee in the company through giving each one the need to be in his place and the will to be better and moves forward.

3. Better communication between the employees and the management to enhance loyalty and commitment to the company
The management (HR department) has to take in consideration the psychological history of the employee before hiring them this could save the company from a crime scene.
The better the communication between the management and the employees the higher the chance to detect the at-risk employees who may commit violent acts this could be done through social activities that employees participate in , on job training that will involve the management staff and the employees under the work stress effects which will enable effective rating and evaluation of each employee.
One to one meeting with employees at risk and discuss with them their fears and their intention to stay or leave the company and their reasons for each.
Recommendations:
I would recommend that as long as the environmental culture of the organization is healthy and well constructed this will manage to decrease the risk of violent acts in the business.
The fact that every employee is to be motivated and appreciated for his work will have a positive psychological impact on each personal and will effectively affect the performance of each department and each team.
Building the concept of teamwork in the organization will enrich the personal outcomes and will give the credit of being successful to the team.
