My role within my placement is as a Carer, I am currently working in a residential home for adults with learning disabilities, and my job consists of assisting the service users with day to day tasks, from personal care to aiding them in the public. My work hours are as follows:
2x 12 hour shifts, 24 hours a week – One Friday and one Sunday.
The home that I work in is a small, privately owned home in Bournemouth, home to 7 service users with learning disabilities.
Tasks that I work by on a day to day basis include: assisting the service users with their personal hygiene, i.e. washing and dressing, assisting them also with tidying, tidying with the service users helps to promote independence and teaches them vital skills. All workers within my placement must undergo mandatory training to ensure each individual is working to an efficient and safe manner, in the best interests of the service users and their families, certain training that is put into place there includes – the care certificate, redcrier, basic first aid & fire emergency training.

Strengths and weaknesses within my placement:
Strengths –
In this particular job in care, I have been taught many interpersonal skills surrounding myself and how I treat others, with the service users placed under my care I feel a responsibility to them. Since working at my placement, I have gained a notable rise in my confidence.
Strengths that I believe an individual needs, particularly in care work surrounding service users with learning disabilities include: patience – patience is likely to be tested on a daily basis, it is how you deal with it that defines you and your suitability for this particular role. Flexibility: care work is well known to be 24 hours, this includes working bank holidays, New Year’s, Christmas, etc. Communication skills: As a care worker, specifically in learning disabilities, communication can be hard and a test, it is important you work in a calm manner to understand exactly what and how a service user is both talking to you about and how they are listening to what you are saying about them, from non-verbal to extremely vocal service users. Passion for your job, passion for your job is arguably the most important personal skill in care work, as it can be personally challenging and a struggle at times, it is how you deal with a situation, which can be taken personally, and that builds you up for the job role.

Weaknesses:
With the strengths in care work come the weaknesses, such as:
Taking situations personally, in care work it can often be unpredictable, what will happen on a day to day basis at work can take you by surprise and if you allow it to, can have an effect on your personal life. It is important in any job, though particularly care, that you keep your personal and work life as two separate parts of your life. Caring for individuals with learning disabilities and mental health problems means that you build a bond and trustful yet professional relationship with the service users in your care, individuals you care for may pick up on negative signals when around you, for example saying you are ‘okay’ yet showing negative expressions and body language can have an effect on the individual, raising their anxiety levels. Although it is important to maintain that the individuals in your care are as happy as you can make their life for them, it is also important to look after yourself, so that you are to the best standard and as efficient as you can be.
How my job affects me:
In my particular job and role, difficult situations can arise, for example a service user can become aggressive once their anxiety levels rise. It is very important that you are a calm person and that it is within your nature, the most important aspect to me is how you deal with things and especially being genuine in how you deal with them.

Health and Illness

...NM2710-The experience of Health & Illness Assessment: Client case Study- Culture and the “Service User” Experience Introduction In this essay, I will be discussing a client that I cared for while I was on my placement practice. I had to fill in my inter-professional education book where i had to interview a client about his experience in the health care setting and how he is coping with his health and illness and the health care he is receiving whilst he is in the care of the National Health Service. I will be discussing his cultural needs and how it makes impacts on health and the impact it has on the client/ families psychological and social. This essay will show a non-judgemental description of the patient’s personality, family, cultural or social background. In this case study I have changed his name and will be referring to the patient as Mr Asim Khan to maintain confidentiality and identity. I will not give the name of the hospital/PCT. This is a breach of confidentiality policy and by the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC 2008). I choose Asim Khan as my chosen patient because I found him polite, and his social history very interesting, he was easy to talk to, and he was open about his medical condition and willing to discuss any questions I had regarding his condition. I also found out about his medical history and social background. I really appreciated that despite his ill condition and the pain he was going through, he still took time out to talk...

Personal Development

...My personal development plan will be based on analyzing my personality, my leadership style and my learning style. The objective of this essay is to initiate my own personal development plan. To begin with, there will be a part to evaluate my personality, combined with an online MBTI Personality Test. After that, my leadership style will be focused on and I will also analyze how this style shapes my career development. Then, I will depict which way of learning is suitable for my future development. To conclude, there will be an important part to examine my personal development action plan which will specifically list some essential and feasible activities to enrich my working competencies and skills so as to accomplish my own goals and objectives. As Mullins (2005) states, “Psychologists have defined personality as consisting of stable characteristics which explain why a person behaves in a particular way”. Besides, to take a holistic view of personality, it is important to take into consideration the dynamic processes, which means focusing on the ways in which an individual’s traits interact. Armstrong (2006) indicates that personality can be regarded as the relatively stable and enduring aspects of individuals that distinguish them from other people. There are many type theories of personality which identifies numerous types of personality which can be used to classify people and many underlie a personality test. Additionally, one of the most widely used type theories is Carl...

Chapter 3 Selecting and Using Assessments

...CHAPTER 3 SELECTING AND USING ASSESSMENTS Introduction This chapter will address three issues: (a) the institutional assessment needs of workforce development organizations, (b) the assessment needs of individual youth to help make informed choices about their careers, and (c) the practical needs of practitioners for information about how to select and use different assessment tools. At the end of this chapter, Exhibit 3.1 contains information that can be used to help with the selection and use of assessments, including a directory of commonly used published tests. Meeting Institutional Assessment Needs Agencies and organizations in the workforce system use assessments to meet institutional needs in two ways-to determine a youth's eligibility for services and to document achievement of program goals by assessing the progress of program participants. The number of participants served and achievement of program goals can impact the amount of funding an organization receives. Funding for the youth programs considered in this guide may come from the Department of Education, the Department of Labor, other federal agencies, states, local governmental agencies, or a combination of these. Table 1.2 in Chapter 1 summarizes the eligibility and assessment requirements of IDEA, WIA Title I, and the Rehabilitation Act. More specific information on assessments mandated or permitted by several federal funding sources may be found in Appendix A. (Mandated assessments are...

Selection and recruitment is a two way process in which the organisation and candidate both have decisions to make. As the owners preference is an emphasis on the need to provide high quality of service and “an employer of choice” it is pertinent to realise that adopting a strong recruitment procedure is paramount to recruiting the best candidate for the role (Ray French, 2010). As this will be a developing project, and will be formed by the reaction of its customers, employee qualities will have to reflect the needs of the hotel.
