However, most of her responses based on the labor side of the talks. ...For a private event at an elegant restaurant, bar, or hotel should it clearly state what the total liquor minimum cost will be after taxes and gratuities before a patron agrees to a certain amount? I have run into this issue quite a bit at work. Just a little background on where I work, I am currently employed at the Maxwell Mansion in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. It was the first mansion built in Lake Geneva by Dr. Maxwell. It is a beautiful old, Victorian mansion that was built back in 1856. The upstairs has been converted into a swanky, Victorian hotel with six rooms. The Lower level was converted in a bar and lounge area. The basement, way back in the 1920?s, was a speakeasy. A few years ago, the basement was converted back into a speakeasy that is open to the public on the weekends. Only if they know the password though! Many people come from out of state to stay and have a drink at this beautiful historic mansion. Because of the renovations made, many different kinds of special events can be held at the mansion. The summer is definitely the busiest time for these events. The mansion is located right across the street from Geneva Lake, in Southeastern Wisconsin. The upstairs bar is full on the weekends and the speakeasy is packed to the brim. On occasion, during the summer, there will be special events. These events include weddings, receptions, birthday parties, bridal showers, etc. All of these events are orchestrated and run by the event coordinator. She makes sure that every...

Workplace Observation Paper

... The settings I studied were two grocery stores. The first store was a college campus grocery store/deli. This store was small and had few employees. The atmosphere of this store was casual and somewhat relaxed. The atmosphere was created by the employees’, their interactions with the customers, and the types of services being offered. The employees wore jeans and polo uniform shirts which is very casual and nothing like business attire or a full uniform like larger grocery store might make them wear. The interactions were the biggest part that created this casual atmosphere and the reality of this store (Lerum, 2001). The employees and customers had many similarities such as for the most part they were around the same age, they were students, and a part of the same university. For these reasons they had somewhat informal conversations and both parties were friendly in a way that seemed like they knew each other. Occasionally employees would stand and talk with each other or with customers instead of finding something to do to be busy. Sometimes an employee and a customer might know each other and engage in longer conversations. The services being offered was that customers could go to the deli and make their own sandwiches or choose one and have things changed to it. This required the employees to ask questions, interact, and often led to them joking and having conversations with customers. Customers felt free to ask questions and make requests and engage in the process of their...

Method Research Paper

...Health and Wellness in the Workplace and the effect on Productivity Employee health and wellness is an ever-increasing topic of discussion amongst organizational leadership. A corporate wellness program is program within an organization that actively promotes a healthy lifestyle through education and the encouragement of a healthy lifestyle possibly through incentives. “The benefits of workplace wellness programs have been widely touted: they are known to improve productivity and can cut absenteeism by reducing the number of personal and sick days used” (Atkins, 2009, para. 1). The author of this paper will explore why health and wellness and workplace productivity would be a desirable topic to research and why it is a sociological phenomenon, the methods and designs used to research the topic, and finally present the design plan for conducting the research. Health and wellness in the workplace would be desirable for any organization that is concerned about the well-being of the workforce and the output of the individuals. In a recent study published April 2009 issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the study found that: - Due to unhealthy employees who are absent or continue to work even while ill (so called "presenteeism"), organizations incur $2.30 in productivity losses for each dollar spent on health care and pharmacy costs. - When considering lost productivity along with medical and pharmaceutical costs, the most...

Organizational Psychology

...Organizational Psychology Paper Cherrise Smith University of Phoenix October 25, 2010 Wanda Moore Define organizational psychology The definition of organizational psychology is simple; it involves settings that are based on workplace or office psychology. These settings are applied to different types of groups, which take research, intervention, theories, and communication strategies to a whole different level in both non-workplaces and workplaces. Groups of people in this area get with each other and work together to accomplish important task and assist them to understand there connections. Organizational psychologists work with different types of people from middle executive to those of lower rank and management teams. Some workplaces want the employees to be as creative as possible. All in all, this means making sure everyone is communicating with each other and ensuring their bodies and minds are doing the same. Organizational psychology also focuses on individual behavior. Although it is focused on groups, individual behavior has become common in the setting to obtain information about the individual’s influences. Unlike groups and organizations, people behave. You derive a person’s sense of humor, taste and other behavioral elements from them, not the group or organization they are affiliated with. The focus on how individual’s influence and are influenced explain organizational processes that are not like social science disciplines, which do not...

Interpreting Gender Roles In The Big Bang Theory

...There are seven main characters in the show and six of them are scientists. The six consists of four males and two females who work at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. It is at this workplace that the majority of interactions and socializations occur amongst the male characters: Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard. The two female scientists Bernadette and Amy are shown occupying the household, as opposed to the workplace. This is similar to the seventh main character Penny who is an unemployed actress. Having this separation of work and home among genders contributes to different behavioral and social outcomes that reinforce traditional gender roles. Now, within these male and female characters, the majority are either married or dating one another. Those that are involved in a romantic relationship are depicted as heterosexual couples. The explicit display of heterosexual dominance in the show implicitly excludes the representation of other forms of sexuality in the workplace and household. Heterosexual dominance in the show also reflects gender performances that are depicted through characters clothing, interactions and behaviors. In this paper, I will apply my media observation of the Big Bang Theory to demonstrate how the cultural ideal of heteronormativity has...

Health Safety & Wellness

...A Comprehensive Health, Safety and Wellness Audit: Ratings & Improvements Saint Leo University Abstract Health and safety in the workplace has been a concern for many years. History is plagued with the injury and death of many individuals on the job. Safety hazards cause immediate and oftentimes violent harm or death. Health hazards slowly lead to decline of health (Ivancevich & Konopaske, 2013). Workplace hazards can also harm individuals outside of the workplace; therefore, it is essential to have programs in place not only comply with regulations, but to demonstrate concern for employee safety and health. This paper will talk about the establishment of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA), identify different parts of the Act, and identify several audits performed by OSHA. Lastly, the paper will examine three audits: compliance, program, and management system audits (Esposito, 2009) and consider how my employer would be rated. Health and safety audits, within the workplace, have been in effect since the 1970’s. Private industries realized the advantages to performing environmentally, health and safety audits Calhoun, n.d.). These audits were implemented to guarantee compliance with the assortment of environmental, health and safety regulations established by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and a host of other federal, state and local agencies (Calhoun, n.d.). In 1912, the Bureau of Labor...
