Inventories in China have increased and the company was forced to discount its products. Nike expects sales in China to be down in the next quarter. The good thing about Nike is that it's quick to make adjustments in the marketplace. The company has been working to reduce its inventory in China and reworking its product line to meet the tastes of the Chinese consumer. In May, the company replaced its executive in charge of Greater China. Nike realizes changes need to be made to succeed in China and the company is doing so. CEO Mark Parker said: The race in China is a marathon. It's not a sprint, and we're set for the long-run. China is where the next phase of growth is for Nike. Consider that Nike just opened its first running store and basketball store last year in China. Comparable growth in its own store is in the double digits. Nike is seeing what's working in its own store and will use that information to grow with its retail partners. Nike also benefits from the Chinese consumer's love of basketball. Nike has contracts with the biggest names in basketball to market to this growing audience. Innovation The focus at Nike is on innovation and developing new products. Nike will have the opportunity to showcase that innovation with the Winter Olympics, the Super Bowl, and the World Cup. Nike expects revenue in the next quarter to grow in the...

...Generation Views Around the world what sport do you think has become the most popular over the years? If you guessed racket ball then you’re probably wrong. It’s Called” The Beautiful Game “, and yes its soccer. They call it the beautiful game because of how one is able to manipulate the ball and make it do whatever they want it to. My dad taught me this meaning one day when we he was training me around the age of 8, and told me that if I kept working hard and stayed committed I would soon understand what he meant. From his generation to mine, soccer has increasingly become a much harder sport and because of that its popularity has increased heavily over the years. Why? Because the level of intensity soccer is played in today’s game, the merchandise big brands are producing, and the one and only World Cup. If you were to attend a professional soccer game without ever playing I’m sure it would change your perspective on the sport for certain. It’s not as easy as it looks on TV, believe me. Modern day soccer is so intense it’s almost insane. If you don’t know what I’m talking about go out and look for some team you could randomly join and play a whole game. Bet most of you wouldn’t last. It’s not just some sport you can just join in now to pass time. It’s either give it your all or go and play another sport because soccer is that serious now. Everyone at the high level is fast, strong, smart, and determined to take the ball from you. It’s nonstop running for...

...INTRODUCTION Hosting World Cup is an opportunity that no country contemplates of when thinking of global narratives. This event has traditionally been considered a privilege of developed countries, but this has changed in the recent past as evident by the fact that developing countries have been given the right host this international competition. For instance, South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup and Brazil the 2014 World Cup. Notably, there has been intense competition between nations to host World Cup. Many countries have vowed to invest billions of dollars in order to increase their chances of being elected to host such mega event. Why should countries compete to host this event? There could be numerous reasons why a number of countries are keen on hosting World Cup, but the most compelling is the promise of an economic and social windfall. Soccer is one of the sports which people tend to identify themselves with. It has gained popularity owing to its impacts on the players, followers, states and other stakeholders. Currently, the game is estimated to have the highest number of followers than any other sport. Due to its vast effects, Soccer World Cups have gained popularity in the past two decades. For the previously held World Cups, great focus has been on social and economic effects. There numerous articles that have been written about the positive and negative effects of World Cups especially to the host countries. Before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, it...

...outcomes of sports mega-events, and about why hosting is so often the project of political and business elites. It also raises questions about the economic impacts of tourism, in the years after the event. The paper highlights a number of parallel developments in the pursuit of hosting major international sports events in Canada and Japan. In both countries, Olympic hosting has been the project of political and corporate elites, and in both countries large claims were made for the economic and social benefits that would follow from hosting Olympics and other mega-events (in Japan, such as the Soccer World Cup). The outcomes, however, have been that public and private investments in the 'infrastructure of play' have created expensive sporting infrastructure and other consumer spaces, but with few social benefits for the unable (or dis-inclined) to present themselves as consumers. Hosting sports mega-events was also intended to signal the emergence of once 'peripheral' cities as major players in the national and global economies, and to attract international tourism. Once again, however, the historical experience suggests that these efforts at 'place promotion' have impacts that are fleeting, at best, and as the years pass it becomes difficult to isolate the impacts of the mega-event on the fortunes and stature of a city from those of other economic triggers or from larger cycles of growth and...

...Introduction The FIFA World Cup in Brazil took place from the 12th of June to the 13th of July 2014. Attracting approximately one million foreign tourists in just one month (Loretta, 2014) it was without a doubt the major global sporting event of the year. Discussions about holding such an event in yet another developing country where controversial from the start and with regard to the 2016 Olympic Games also held in Brazil, they still are. In this essay I want to evaluate to what extent Brazil as a tourism destination benefitted from the World Cup – or not – and how this affects the destination in the long term. Therefore, I firstly provide three positive impacts on Brazil, of economic, social and environmental nature. This is followed by three negative impacts, divided into the same categories. This is followed by an application of theory about hallmark events and a future perspective of Brazil as a tourist attraction. In the end, I conclude this essay by summarizing the main aspects and giving my personal opinion on the developments described before. Body If we compare the total revenue of the World Cup with the total costs of the tournament, coming from investments such as infrastructure or stadium construction, we can calculate that the economical boost should be around 2.6 Billion Dollars (Harris, 2014). Also, the fact that one million foreign tourists were travelling the country in this period may not be underestimated. A positive experience of local culture and interaction...

..."South Africans are very proud of what we have done here, it has been a fantastic event, from an economic and a unity perspective," says Lee-Anne Bac, director at Grant Thornton Strategic Solutions in Johannesburg. "Hosting the 2010 World Cup will radically alter the landscape for tourism in southern Africa. There has also been a reputational boost for South Africa that can help bring inward investment and visitors. South Africa has been rebranding as a tourist destination and as one based around the development of a global sports event business model." "So we really believe there will be a tourist momentum moving forward," says Ms Bac. "The tourism structures we developed for 2010 will stay in place, and the aim is now to attract further events, conferences and conventions to the country. 'Good returns' And many, including President Jacob Zuma, also envisage a lasting positive effect on the economy through the recent development of national infrastructure. And Ms Bac says she has already noticed one potential economic benefit from the investment in infrastructure. "As a citizen of South Africa it has made commercial life so much easier with the new roads and transport links, with less time wasted travelling and getting around," she says. The infrastructure legacy of the World Cup also includes stadiums, airports, and information technology. "We can safely say that we have good returns on our investment, which includes 33bn rand spent on transport infrastructure...

...Lloyd Williams Geoffrey Agnor 7/12/14 Humanities The Cup Khyentse Norbu’s “The Cup” (Comedy, 1999) the World Cup is being held in France while two young refugees arrive at a monastery in India. While the setting and feel of the monastery would usually be serene and peaceful, it is disrupted by the excitement and hype about the world cup. The main anticipator of the World Cup is a young and mischievous student named Orgyen. Orgyen nows that the World Cup is very important to him, as do many other young boys in the monastery, and he will do anything it takes to be able to watch as much of the games as he can. As this occurs, the head of the monastery contemplates on the changes of the world and how this greatly is affecting the young boys in the monastery. Although technology and tradition and this undying difference, they can ultimately come together and create something great for both the students and the Abbot. The students, particularly Orgyen, idolize soccer and the World Cup. The fascination and wonders of other cultures bring them into a deeper love for the sport and the thrill that comes with the World Cup. These students are willing to do almost anything to be able to experience the World Cup, especially Orgyen. He goes over the line, bringing other students along, and sneaks out to watch one of the games at a place they paid money for. However, the Geko and Abbot are not at all concerned with this idea of soccer and other cultures. They only wish that the young...

...first 5 years of this plan are presented in the charts and tables later in this plan We still need to do. These figures represent the key prospects available for public Wi-Fi Service in Brazil. These targets are attainable through a proactive approach and by partnering with the 2014 Brazil Soccer World Cup organizing comity. The following business plan has been created on the basis of extensive market research which showed that there will be an massive demand for public internet services. With Brazil’s mountainous topography and dense popupated landscape it is almost impossible to cover large areas with GSM masts. Therefore it is economically viable to rollout smaller areas with local Wi-Fi access. Consumers demand high speed internet connectivity which technologies like 802.11 b and n will give them. There are multiple other benefits going with Wi-Fi rather than GSM. One such benefit is that the consumer can experience speed greater than 50mb/s without having to own a 4G LTE device. Wi-Fi is much cheaper to roleout than the latest 4G LTE GSM service. The plan highlight that this service will be launched and fully operational ready for 2014 for the FIFA Soccer World Cup in Brazil. All ticket holders will get a free 10mb voucher which one could redeemed from any Wi-Fi Access point, at which point they can choose to become a subscriber to the ongoing paid service. ...Sport Events Industry Individual Report Words: 2822 Special events have always been part of human history. Anthropologists have traced human civilization for tens of thousands of years, and at the heart of their observations are the ‘special events’ that typify and explain tribal behavior of that time and place. At this point, there is no question that special events have taken on all aspects of an “industry” in that their organization and management are the underlying support for marking the local and domestic details of our lives. Events are not restricted to festive celebrations but can include a variety of gatherings, serious or happy, and religious or cultural, including meetings and conferences, expositions and trade shows, private and public special events, art entertainment and sport events, media or corporate events, and events of various sizes. Events are given a lot of definitions but the most general one that characterizes events is “Temporary occurrence with a predetermined beginning and end. It is unique stemming from the blend of management, programme setting and people.” (Getz, 2005). On the following report there is a wide overview of the sport events sector, that will examine the history and development, the factors that support this sector, the impacts of these events, career opportunities that will arise through this sector and future trends. History and Development Sport reflects the country in which it is played, so inevitably the history of sport...
