...World Hunger Have you ever thought about what its like to not have food? I am sure that most people do not have to worry about being hungry everyday, but there are people who do. There are currently 925 million people that are starving in the world today. It hurts to think about all of those people that do not make it through the night because of not having any food. According to the definition in the Oxford English Dictionary hunger is “the uneasy or painful sensation caused by want of food; craving appetite. Also the exhausted condition caused by want of food.” There are so many ways that world hunger can be eliminated. Together, we could raise money, start food drives, and even teach those countries who are in need of food, how to grow different food. If just one person got out there and helped feed the hungry, just imagine the lives that could be saved. Its amazing how much just one person can do. There are so many around the world that are dying every minute from starvation, but by raising awareness, showing the statistics, and giving ideas, we can end world hunger. We live in a world where so many have no clue about the people in need of food. I feel like so many don’t show their loving sides to those who need our help. Of course, there are a good bit of people out there who show their kindness to those in need. Just think about everyone who is worrying about when they will get their next meal. The problem that is occurring right now needs to be revealed to the world...

...the fact of having no job, and inadequate benefits. The consequences of poverty can be social or political; a very distinguished one is death. A lot of people die every day because of hunger, and there are some organizations helping the poverty problem disappear as soon as possible. The most affected generations related to this problem are children. Putting more job opportunities could be very helpful to help this problem, getting volunteers to do social service in the most needed communities and sending some medicines with them so they can help as much as possible. 1.0 Introduction The purpose of this research is to explain more about the subject that was chosen and to get informed about what is happening and what is being done about it. The chosen aspect is poverty, specifically hunger. ...World Hunger and Society There have been countless occasions in which an ad showing a starving child appears on a television screen or in the middle of a magazine. These images are real and showcase he affect that world hunger is having on people worldwide. World hunger is a large problem that the world faces today. However, there are many examples of organizations and people that are making an effort to putting an end to this problem that plagues many parts of the world. Some of these organizations include UNICEF, Bread for the World, and World Food Programme. All of these organizations are making different methods to help relieve world hunger. One organization striving to end world hunger is UNICEF. UNICEF is a company that particularly tends to the problems affecting children of the world. In particular regards to world hunger, the UNICEF program suggests that the main influence on world hunger is poverty. More specifically, a lack of goods and services can hurt a child’s environment. With a deprivation of resources, a child can suffer from malnutrition and starvation, which can potentially lead to death. UNICEF encompasses different methods to tackle the problem of world hunger among children. For one, it directly provides funding and supplies for many countries. Food is directly delivered to people through smaller organizations and governments with UNICEF as the overseer. Also, UNICEF contacts local caregivers in countries to place children...

...WORLD HUNGER 2012 1 Sociological Review of World Hunger in 2012 Sociologist Max Weber concluded that people select research topics according to their personal beliefs – which is why I have chosen to investigate the dilemma of World Hunger. World hunger is a complex social issue that has overwhelmed us globally for centuries. I’ve taken a personal interest in this social issue because of my incomprehension of the apparent challenges to the world’s most solvable problem. Hunger is defined as a condition resulting from chronic under consumption of food and or nutritious food products. Most would like to assume that famine only exists in poor countries, yet research shows that most in poor countries live on farms and half the world’s people are farmers – therefore, minimizing an opportunity for lack of food and hunger (Macionis, 2010). This information coupled with the enormous amounts of food produced by other means leaves us to question why yet more than nine million people per year die from hunger??? World Hunger is an issue that crosses sociological boundaries at all levels, to include poverty, race, and economic limitations. While I’m sure there are some who would like to blame hunger on one social boundary over another – research indicates that famine is a form of global poverty that results from deliberate worldwide policies and the world produces enough food for every person in the world to eat plentiful (1986; Lappé, Collins, & Rosset, 1998). ...

...Hunger, a term used to describe extreme and painful cravings for food (2011 World Hunger, 2011). World hunger is still in an issue in the 21st century, extreme malnutrition largely exists within developing countries (FAO, 2010). FAO, The Food and Agriculture Organization, claims that world hunger has risen to 925 million (13.6% of world population) in 2010, this is caused by factors such as increased food prices and a worldwide economic crisis (FAO, 2010). Poverty is a chronic issue in under developed countries, many people could only afford little food but with the inflation of food prices, the hungry are getting hungrier (Estimating the Short, 2011). Many businesses in Africa are losing profit because the consumers cannot afford the products. The price of goods is rising due to expensive oil, lack of crops and climate change. Due to inflation of food prices, hunger is an increasing issue in under developed countries. “Figure 1.0: Different poverty levels (Global Issues, 2010) “Figure 1.0: Different poverty levels (Global Issues, 2010) Food price inflation has recently been a serious issue around the world. Many are feeling the impact, but those in poorer countries are getting hit the hardest (Estimating the Short, 2011).Within developing countries there is poverty and scarce resources. This is caused by such factors as bad government, low education and lack of health care (Global Issues, 2010).Poverty is a large issue within developing countries; many individuals can barely...

...World Hunger and Malnutrition According to the United Nations World Food Programme, there are 925 million chronically hungry people in the world. That means one in seven people in the world do not get enough food to maintain a healthy body and lead active lifestyles, making hunger and malnutrition the number one risk to health world wide. Natural disasters, conflict, poverty, poor agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of the environment remain the key causes of hunger, and the recent economic slowdown in many countries have pushed more people into hunger (WFP). The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) states that more than 90% of the 925 million chronically hungry people in the world are in developing countries, there are 642 million in Asia and the Pacific, 265 million in Sub-Saharan Africa, 53 million in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 42 million in the Near East and North Africa. People who are chronically malnourished lack the nutrients needed for proper health and development. There are several forms of malnutrition; protein-energy malnutrition is a potentially fatal body depletion disorder where a person’s consumption of protein and energy is insufficient to maintain the body’s nutritional needs. Marasmus is caused by an energy deficiency that stunts growth, waste muscle, fat and tissues making the body appear extremely thin. Kwashiorkor is caused by protein deficiency making the arms, legs and stomach swell. Other forms of malnutrition are less...

...English 101 01 Aug 2012 World Hunger Someone knocks at your door. When you open the door you see a child, he seems small and malnourished. The child says that he has not eaten for two days. You are a little skeptical of the situation and ask where his parents are and he says, that they are homeless and that are living in a field nearby. As for you, you have just enough food to make it to your next payday yourself. You know that you could survive skipping a meal during the week to give up the child, surely the child is still alive after not eating for two days. A thought enters your mind, why should I give up my food or resources to this child. It’s not your fault that he has not eaten and why should you make yourself uncomfortable by giving up a meal. You send the child on his way. Garrett Hardin an ecologist and author wrote, “Lifeboat Ethics: the Case Against Helping the Poor” for Psychology Today (1974 Sept).Hardin would have also undoubtedly sent the child on his way. Hardin would argue that it not your fault and that you would not be helping the child by giving your recourses or food to help him. On the other hand an Australian philosopher and author Peter Singer wrote, “The Singer Solution to World Poverty” for The New Times Magazine, (1999 Sept) would have certainly given up the food and more to help the child and his family. Different as it may seem both Hardin and Singer are using the same philosophy just...

...One of the biggest problems in America is our denial. Denying the fact that one out of seven people can’t afford to fill up one cup of food, even in the home of the all you can eat buffet. We face the tremendous problem, yet so simple to solve, World Hunger. World Hunger is a astronomic problem with our ever-lasting increasing population rate. There is approximately 925 million hungry in the world out of 7 billion currently, but it is soon to be 9 billion people. Not only is it adults suffering from hunger, it is mostly children too. Every 10 seconds, we lose a vulnerable, helpless child to hunger. Due to a study conducted in 2008, we discovered that if a child is not provided with it’s proper nutrients within its first 1,000 days of life,...

...The organic food movement has gradually increased world hunger. Organic agriculture is a lot more expensive than inorganic food, and yields a much smaller and inferior quality type of crop. The world already has a shortage of food, causing starvation. If all agriculture were organic, the world would starve. Only-organic farming does not seem like a realistic idea because of the world’s large population; there would be limited supply of food. Of course, if half the population were to die off, it may seem a little more practical, but that is not the case. Four percent of Europe is currently using organic ways of growing which is a bigger percentage than America (one percent). However, Africa and most of the Western hemisphere happen to be 100 percent organic, which may be why a lot of those countries are poor. Those countries may have the food, but they do not have the money to purchase such resources. Organic farming is not cheap, and neither are the costs at the grocery store. Economically, a wholly organic agricultural system would cause a collapse in much of this developing planet. "A wholly organic world agricultural system would quickly lead to mass starvation” not to mention "economic and political collapse in much of the developing world (Ngin)." It would burn a hole through people’s pockets, especially with the economy not being at its best at the moment. Research has shown how organic farming may significantly increase yields for poor farmers and consumers...
