My review is going to assume the perspective of Aristotle:
Choose one of these thinkers, and based on the assigned readings from his work and your understanding of his view of stories and storytelling, explain what he might think of Boccaccio’s work.
The review should contain a very brief summary that identifies and discusses the main idea(s) of both The Decameron and the text by your chosen critic
Followed by a critique of The Decameron’s strengths and weaknesses in the voice of your chosen critic.
Platos views on storytelling- He opens by characterizing the effect of poetry [and storytelling] as a 'crippling of the mind'. It is a kind of a disease, for which one has to acquire an antidote. The antidote must consist of a knowledge 'of what things really are'. In short, poetry is a sort of mental poison, and is the enemy of truth. This is surely a shocker to the sensibilities of any modern reader and his incredulity is not lessened by the peroration with which, a good many pages later, Plato winds up his argument
Plato thought ethics was an exact (theoretical) science; Aristotle thought precision was extremely difficult in a science such as ethics. Please note that "science" is being used in its ancient sense of knowledge in general.
Aristotles views on storytelling- Art does not attempt to teach. It merely asserts it is thus or thus that life is perceived to be. That is my bit of reality, says the artist. Take it or leave it – draw any lessons you like from it – that is my account of things as they are – if it has any value to you as evidence or teaching, use it, but that is not my business: I have given you my rendering, my account, my vision, my dream, my illusion – call it what you will. If there is any lesson in it, it is yours to draw, not mine to preach.” Similarly, Plato’s charge that needless lamentations and ecstasies at the imaginary events of

...Wonderful World of Literature NAME HERE CLASS INSTRUCTOR NAME HERE DATE The Wonderful World of Literature Reading literature can be fun, educational, and exciting if you have the ability to lose yourself inside of the story. Literature is what you interpret it to be through short stories, poems, and written plays. There are many approaches you can use to help you understand literature. The reader’s response is one of the best ways to help you understand literature because it forms question based around your interest in the story. Based on author (Shapiro, 2010), his comment on literature was “just as people generate causal explanations for social events around them, story readers usually generate inferences about causality of events when reading a story.” I always try to create my own imaginary world to help me lose myself inside the story. “When you allow reading to unlock your imagination, your connection sets the stage for intellectual engagement.” (Clugston, 2012). I have read several forms of literature during a homework reading assignment and there was one story that stood out in my opinion. The story called “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” written by James Thurber. This story was great because it made me create images in my mind as I was reading the story. This story contained two key ingredients that I love to relate to when I am reading. A character with a imagination and can find humor in their daily activities with the real world. I was...

...A Comparison of Dynamics in Husband/Wife Relationships in Ancient Literature Introduction Several factors and dynamics characterize the nature of the relationship between one individual and another. Such a situation occurs because human beings have different and divergent personal demands that clearly outline their identity. In any event, people treat each other depending on the kind of relationship that exists between them. Currently, in most cultures across the world, relationships can occurs between a husband and wife or father and son or young lovers. Considering the western world, ancient works of literature have documented different kinds of relationships among individuals. Again, such works of literature depict how a variety of demands and dynamics shape aspects of relationships. Sometimes, some relationships seem hard to handle especially when one or both parties fail to meet the demands and expectations of the relationship. This paper seeks to analytically compare and contrast the dynamics, implications for the actions and consequences for husband/wife relationship. In this case, Theseus/Phaedra and Orgon/Elmire relationships will stand as the reference points. As per the ancient western literature, Theseus represented the king of Athens while Phaedra stood as the queen of Greece. The story involving the two acquired its influence from the actions and tragedy that shaped their relationship and fate. Also, this story documents challenges that have faced husband...

...Doll House To what extent do the historical and biographical context necessary or helpful in understanding A Doll House? The historical and biographical context are helpful in understanding A Doll House because they give outside information that helps to better understand the play. The biographical view helps one understand that many of the themes are taken from real life situations and they are not just made up. An example of this is the sacrificial role of women. In the story Nora sacrificed a lot for her family. She sacrificed everything when Torvald was about to die she took a loan out of the bank and that was illegal at the time. This parallels with the life of Henrik Ibsen because his mother sacrificed a lot for his family. Her father was a successful merchant and she married into a merchant family but her husband made some bad decisions that caused them to lose all of their money. He became abusive and started to abuse Henrik’s mother. She sacrificed time and again for the sake of her family. What values are shown in A Doll House? Henrik Ibsen presents values such as gender roles, family, marriage, and social status. The main value that I personally agree with is the idea of gender equality. I believe that men and women are equal and should be treated as such. This has not been reflected in history as men have taken advantage of their leadership roles and extended them into the huosehold. A Doll House presents this value in a subtle manner, but it is prominent. For...

...1. Problems in human relations have been expressed in “to Whom Should I Speak Today”; do these problems still exist? Support your answer. Answer: Yes, it is still existing. There are times that we think that we do not have anyone to talk to - it’s either because we had a misunderstanding towards another person or we committed mistakes. There are also instances that we do not know to whom should we speak each day because we face different people including our friends – but there are still times that we do not know who they really are and we don’t even know if we had to talk to them because we have doubt. Just think of this, we choose to whom we will share our secrets, we choose to whom we can ask for advice and they aren’t the same person. Why have people hardships on thinking to whom should they speak today? Because we are lacking of trust; of honesty and even of faith. It is better to be vocal but not that much. We must know the limits and check if it’s the right place and the right time to talk to. We talk not having the intention to hurt others feeling but to give solutions and opinions in the certain topic. If you had a problem with someone – speak up, open up, and don’t let you feelings be a barrier to solving certain issues. Then, don’t tell a lie. Telling a lie to save others for a moment is leading to more complicated issues and it will get harder to solve. We have two ears to listen and one mouth to speak. Just speak with thought and know to whom we should speak...

...Liam Rawson World Literature Assignment 1 An analysis of the role of minor characters in The Visit and Chronicle of a Death Foretold in establishing a collectivistic or individualistic society. March 13, 2011 Word Count: 1073 Rawson 1 Without any characters; there is no story. Every tale needs a knight in shining armor to save the endangered princess or a misguided hero to meet a tragic end. A protagonist and an antagonist are the most basic of writing conventions and are crucial to the story. It is important; however, to not overlook the roles of minor characters in the plot. For example, Snow White would have been a radically different story without the seven dwarves. This exemplifies how minor characters can drastically influence the outcome of a story in a number of ways. In both Durrenmatt’s The Visit and Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the minor characters have an influential role in determining the fate of the protagonist. These minor characters are used by Durrenmatt and Marquez to establish an individualistic or collectivistic society within their works and by doing so isolate the protagonists and lead them to their deaths. In a collectivistic society, the people tend to view themselves as part of a group and hold the needs of the group over that of the individual. This is the society which Durrenmatt has presented in The Visit. In Durrenmatt’s The Visit, the town of Guellen is populated by minor characters lacking any names. Throughout the...

...Literature is the foundation of life. It places an emphasis on many topics from human tragedies to tales of the ever-popular search for love. While it is physically written in words, these words come alive in the imagination of the mind, and its ability to comprehend the complexity or simplicity of the text. Literature enables people to see through the lenses of others, and sometimes even inanimate objects; therefore, it becomes a looking glass into the world as others view it. It is a journey that is inscribed in pages, and powered by the imagination of the reader. Ultimately, literature has provided a gateway to teach the reader about life experiences from even the saddest stories to the most joyful ones that will touch their hearts. From a very young age, many are exposed to literature in the most stripped down form: picture books and simple texts that are mainly for the sole purpose of teaching the alphabet etc. Although these are not nearly as complex as an 800-page sci-fi novel, it is the first step that many take towards the literary world. Progressively, as people grow older, they explore other genres of books, ones that propel them towards curiosity of the subject, and the overall book. Reading and being given the keys to the literature world prepares individuals from an early age to discover the true importance of literature: being able to comprehend and understand situations from many perspectives. Physically speaking, it is impossible to be someone else. It is impossible...

Literature Goes Beyond Life

...Literature goes beyond life "Literature goes beyond life. It is art; it is an imaginative creation that can tell truths gracefully, subtly through narrative, poetry and the movement of characters on a stage. Any imaginative act suggests possibility, and this is another reason to continue studying literature" (Florence Dee Boodakian). Literature has been the most influential art in the history of man. It passes down information from one generation to the next and unites all people from different places with a diverse culture. For examples, in Shakespeare, Walker, and Frost's works, it teaches and inspires us in lots of ways; emotionally, spiritually and intellectually. It also initiates change throughout our lifetime. It affects how people live and see the world in a bigger picture; another example of Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" it inspired and touches the hearts of many, that heritage is what binds one’s culture. Literature instills the skills needed by an individual to analyze critical things, to make a significant impact and differences in their lives and future. Literature is not a repository old scrolls and tomes, but great laboratory where the relation between man and the environment has been analyzed, experimented with and redefined over the history of civilization. The act of reading literature can change and shape how we perform and study things. Literature is the expression of oneself and the social life and thoughts through language that resemble one's heritage...

Value of Literature

...The Value of Literature Literature can be used to place value on a wide span of topics. From books that may break our hearts to one’s that make us laugh uncontrollably. Even though literature is only written in words, it is our imagination that makes those words come to reality, by the way we see the words in our imaginations. Whatever literature that is read, it is in the perspective of the author and you are reading through the lens of the writer. Philip Marchand said “Not to understand the disposition of things is the fate of children or slaves. Imaginative literature is the race's best tool for acquiring such understanding. This is the childishness and slavishness in the soul of someone who cannot respond to great literature.” Marchand talks about how our imagination is one of the most important tools that an individual can have. Ultimately, with the way literature uses up the creativity side of the brain, it truly helps expand our imagination. From a very young age, many of us were introduced to books with big pictures and little words. These simple little books were meant to teach us the names of colours, the alphabet and what noise animals made. While continuing to grow older, individuals starts to explore more genres of literature to find what they enjoy. For example, in the last couple years of high school, I have really gotten into the horror/mystery genres of book which is the reason I chose The Shining as my ISU novel. The fact that I had read The Shining before...

Where Are You Going Where Have You Been Analysis

...Throughout the history of the world, society has been plagued by periods of extreme brutality and disorder, and it is often difficult to come to terms with what happened. All forms of literature, from novels to short stories to poems, can offer a way to understand those kinds of atrocities in which people may not be familiar or able to come to terms, by presenting a coping mechanism that is relatable. Examples of how literature allows society to accept the violence and oppression that surrounds them can be found in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and Joyce Carol Oates’ “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Since both stories contain events that seem cruel and horrifying, readers can analyze the actions of the “villain” and make connections to the real world and relate it to the horrors of everyday life....
