Many countries partook in an arms race, and countries like the United Kingdom and Germany increased their military spending by more than fifty percent during the world war. Previous military tactics were proven obsolete at the start of the world war. Things like barbed wire, machine guns and tanks were used for the first time during this war, and more long distance battles were used opposed to previous face to face combat. Gas warfare...

...World War I Introduction World War One was a time of struggle for the World. A Time for Great Famine. Many factors lead to great tensions in Europe, sparking the need for a war. This war, otherwise known as 'The Great War', occurred in 1914 until 1918. It had many famous battles, such as The Battle Of The Somme, a battle of many casualties, especially for the British. The war was mainly fought between the members of the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy) and the members of The Triple Entente (Great Britain, France, and Russia). Eventually, countries such as the USA joined in. Rivalries between countries, arguments over empires, an arms race are the causes of the European tensions that lead to the war. A cause thought to spark the war was the shooting of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, next in line to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by a Serbian terrorist in Bosnia. This caused the World War One. This War was the fulfillment of the Prophecies spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ. As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against...

...Introduction The First World War went down in history as one of the worst wars ever to be fought, owing to the magnitude of destruction and loss of life it left in its wake. The war started in 1914 ending in 1919, and has been described variously as the Great War, the War of Nations and the War to End All Wars. (Dwight E, 1966) It was fought by many nations around the world, with Europeans being the main players, and is very significant for the way it shaped the continents years after it ended. Many explanations for the possible causes of the war have been given, some of which have been accepted while others have been disputed. The war was fought in a series of battles fought at different locations at different times and involved over 65million men. This paper discusses the genesis, chronology of events during the war, the main players, the casualties and the implication of the war on modern history. The Genesis, Main Players, Events, Casualties and Implications First of all, it is thought that competition among the major European powers was an ingredient in fuelling the war. This was so especially between Britain and Germany, who were competing to have the most powerful navy in the world. All parties were building up large armies and navies, and from this there emerged a professional and powerful class of military officers. At one point, Germany had a well trained, large army that could match the entire army of Great Britain. This led to emergence of tension in Europe, which...

...World War One World War One has shaped many people’s view of the world today. Even though there were some advancements from the war, the setbacks outweigh the advancements. For example, most of France was destroyed, the war left Europe’s countries divided, and millions of people died. This left France and Great Britain angry and wanting revenge against Germany. Even though Germany did play a crucial role in World War One, they should not be blamed for the beginning of the war. Germany should not be blames because they fought in self-defense against Russia. Germans did not believe Germany started the war (Doc. 8). For them, the war was a war of self-defense against Russia (Doc. 8). Russia mobilized on the 31st of July in 1914 (Doc. 8) and Germany...

...Prior to the beginning of World War I the attitude toward war was extremely positive. People were excited about the war and they greeted it with enthusiasm. In Europe they were told it was going to over by Christmas so people weren’t expecting it to be long nor brutal for that matter. The press romanticized the war with various propaganda; so many men enlisted and were very proud to serve. They viewed it as they were going to be heroes and a victory was on its way; and no men wanted to miss the action. War made people, men and women, feel very nationalistic for their country, thus making them eager to contribute as much as they could to the war effort. Some men felt war was going to be a “great adventure” and gave “the war an ideal and almost romantic character”. All of Europe also helped romanticized the war and heroism because the people no experience with a long bloody war, they didn’t know what to expect. Contributions other than enlisting in the war were numerous. They men and women wanted to help out with the war effort for their country because it made them feel proud and integrated with the war. Some people contributed with food rations and where they donated food to the soldiers. Others planted victory gardens and some women took over the jobs the men did. Women also joined the Red Cross to help out in the war. The wealthier people donated money to the war effort so they could contribute in a way. In that early stage of the war they didn’t know how bad, long and bloody...

...In response to the United States entering World War 1 on April 6, 1917, it was important that they recruit troops and prepare the correct equipment required for war. When we declared war, the Government needed to persuade Americans to invest in the war, both financially and emotionally. With that being said, the Government tried really hard to make the citizens think a certain thing. Thus being called propaganda. One of the most popular themes of the propaganda posters were liberty bonds. As one advertisement says, “Beat back the Hun with Liberty Bonds.” In this poster, there is a German soldier with menacing eyes and bloody fingers creeping on the Atlantic. The purpose of this propaganda poster was to encourage Americans to invest in the...

...After the First World War ended a lot of people started to blame Germany for the outbreak of the war. The proof of that would be the Treaty of Versaille that ended the first world war. Germany was faced harsh terms and literally blamed for the the damage, as it mentioned in the article 231 of the treaty. It states: The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies." However some historians have put forward the idea that the blame for the "Great War" is not only on Germany. Germany was...

...What were some of the weapons used in world war one or abbreviated (WW1) to help keep the country’s safe and also help win the war and save their territory and people of the land. Firstly, Weapons are used in are everyday life they could be good and bad when someone is behind the gun with their finger on the trigger. When I say bad I mean how people are killing people for the meanest of it and it's messed up because nobody has a big enough reason to take a life away from someone, although the good reasons they can be used is to protect ourselves and our family as they were used in WW1 they used the weapons to preserve and keep their country from losing the war and also to help protect themself from being hurt or killed. Secondly, many weapons were used in the war there were rifles, flamethrowers, machine guns, mortars, artillery, poison gases, tanks, and aircraft and these are just a few of the weapons know we could go into detail about every little weapon but that's not exactly worth wasting time....

...opportunity to speak with George Melver about his experiences during World War 2. George was a child during the war, he was 8 years old when the war started. When America entered the war he was 10 years old. He remembers the day the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor. He says he was sitting in the living room with his family listening to their radio. They heard the news of the bombing and he saw the frightened look on his parents’ faces. Because of this George was worried. But at that time he did not know that we were going to enter the war. He did not know that his life was about to change. The thing I found the most interesting is that George remembers being in his one room schoolhouse and drawing propaganda posters about the war. He says he specifically remembers one poster that one of his classmates made that had a vivid picture of the bombings of pearl harbor. Another thing they did in school was listen to and sing songs about the war....

...The journal of a lowly soldier undermines the usual top down story of World War One in that its fundamental focus is not historical processes, theories, and ideologies, but rather the tale of an ordinary man’s life and struggles during and following the war. The tragedies of the war are brought to the forefront in Dewards diary entries, using words he paints a much more humane picture of the trauma and losses of the war. Also, Deward’s transformation from an enthusiastic recruit to a world weary veteran is contrary to the usual, top down story of men fighting the ‘good fight’ to further their nation’s interests. Additionally, many of the usual stories on World War One written by scholars detail the social system and politics, however, this first hand account story goes into detail regarding the degree to which the trauma he experienced during the war influenced his life following the end of the war....

...Why did World War One break out? There are many reasons as to why war broke out in 1914, which included many intertwined factors, such as the conflicts and hostility of the four decades leading up to the war. Moreover, Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism played major roles in the conflict. All of these factors where established in many of Europe's 'Great Powers' which consisted of; Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia. Many of the reasons as to why war broke out were built up over years and even decades thus, were long term causes. However, a handful of events occurred over a few months and years prior to the event, consequently were short term causes. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his pregnant wife, acted as a trigger that ultimately led to war breaking out. As a result of this T.F. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. The assassination gave Austria-Hungary the ideal excuse to declare war against Serbia. An ultimatum was issued to Serbia stating that it must agree to all the terms described in the ultimatum in order to avoid war. Austria-Hungary gave Serbia 48 hours to reply and clearly stated that all the terms must be met and complied with. Serbia agreed to all terms except one. WW1 had many countries involved but not all of them entered at the same time. There were three sides to choose from at the beginning of WW1. One option was the Central Powers which included; Germany and Austria-Hungary, and were later joined...

There are so many women who sacrificed their live during this time, but the main women who caught my attention because of what they did were Mary Wilson, Virginia Hall, Ruby Bradley and Reba Z Whittle. Well known for what they did, these ladies have made history and made more women to be proud to be one. First off, Mary Wilson was one of the reasons why this was the greatest generation. When she was only 16, she started working in a laundry to support her family but was later fired because she was too young. So her mother...
