...Sade’ McMullen Professor Rozga English 1102 October 21, 2013 The world today revolves around technology. Everywhere we look, something new is being created. Whether it’s the new iPhone, tablet, or even inventions like paper towel dispensers. As I looked for another outlet to compare the LCK monologue to, I came across one about bathroom technology by a comedian, Demetri Martin. Martin explains his hatred towards new technology, except his is about bathroom technology. In the LCK monologue, he talks about his hatred towards smartphones and how they are effecting today’s society I feel the claim being made is that many of these new advances serve no purpose and isn’t needed in today’s world. In the LCK monologue, he explains how kids want a smartphone because all their peers have one and they want to look cool in order to not be an outcast (LCK smartphones). Martin also tells a story of how the inventors of technology thought it would be cool to have all these automated devices in public restrooms. Martin does not like the devices because of how complex it is to use them. He believes the devices make people look stupid just trying to get them to work properly.(Martin Bathrooms) In LCK monologue, he believes society has become lazier and we let technology do a lot for us. For example, kids playing video games all day long instead of going outside to play with the neighborhood kids. Since the inventors built the new devices in bathrooms, it makes people look lazy as if they...

...Technology change the world In China, we have a saying that “Science and technology is the first productive force”. Technology affects people’s daily life, with the innovation of technology, the world developed rapidly in recent centuries. Image that if our forefathers do not create new technology, how our life will be today; we will not have lots kind of food like today; we will not have vehicles such as car, train, aircraft, and we will not have so many high buildings to live. In this class, we learnt a lot of historical events before 1500 AD. In ancient time, there is no advanced technology in the world; our ancestors can merely use their hands to change the nature. Gradually, they find some regularity in the world, such as round objects can move much easier than other shape; then they use their intelligence create lots of new technologies, and innovate the technologies as needed. In this paper, I will talk about five great inventions which affect the world significantly; they are wheel, water wheel, compass, paper, and plow. The invention of the wheel is one of the most important inventions in the ancient time. Without the wheel, the world would not develop so fast. According to the existing data, the wheel is invented by the Mesopotamian in about 2500 BC ("The invention of," 2010). The development of wheel has 6 stages, starting from rolling cylinder, moving to two wheels connect with axles by spokes (Bellis, 2012). At the beginning, people realized that round objects...

...Ethical Dilemma in the Use of Information Technology * The use and growth explosion of today’s information on technology has been updated and aided with the emerging and development of computer technologies. There is so many networks out there today such as Google .and have allowed many exchanges of information but with these exchanges it has also come with new challenges. Rights and responsibilities in the way information is available to sources and with these issues arising this has caused some concerns and have given some rise to some ethical dilemmas. Ethical dilemmas greatly affect businesses and especially small businesses that are just starting out or small businesses that may not have backing capital or firms to advise on how to handle an ethical issue or expertise to deal with ethical dilemmas in the utilization of technologies. Today’s technology has taken such a huge leap in the last few years that it can drastically affect companies that are small or large in size. * In today’s world of technology there is a tremendous amount of computer crimes and they are very illegal .A lot of the activities being performed by using a computer and they include theft, financial fraud, embezzlement, online harassment, virus infection and sabotage. Computer crimes affect all businesses large and small that rely on the Internet to operate. A research report in 2000 by the FBI showed that out of all the business respondents, 85 percent had been victims of computer crime....

...Thomas Friedman takes a jibe of the “It’s a small world, after all” theme and writes a lengthy article on his discover that the world, in terms of innovation, technology, geo-economics and globalization that the world is “flat,” after all. He starts the article off by comparing Christopher Columbus’ discovery in 1492 of the world being round when he set sail searching for India. Thomas Friedman also set off to search for India however for many different reasons. He writes the article, “It’s a Flat World, After All,” in a way to encourage the reader to prepare for the future. He stresses the importance of studying science and engineering. He makes several references to surrounding countries being significantly more advanced than America. In 2001, China had twice as many college graduates than the United States and India had one million more students graduate than the United States. China also had six times as many students with engineering degrees than the United States. After reading this article, I would have to agree with Thomas Friedman, that the world is indeed flat in terms of innovation, technology, geo-economics and globalization. Education facilitators, human resource departments and even parents in the United States need to encourage furthering education and engaging individuals in pursuing science and engineering in order for our country to compete in the emerging markets in the technologically advancing race. I believe this is a good article which serves...

...My Best Day Ever It seems to me that birthday celebrations’ become less interesting as time passes. There are no more party hats, balloons, cake, ice cream, and the joyful sound of “Happy Birthday.” I guess that’s why we hold all the good memories inside our heart, so whenever there’s a bad issue that may come up, we can reminisce on the past. In fact, birthday celebrations in my family were rare because my grandmother was raising eight children in a three bedroom house by herself, and she wasn’t able to provide certain things we needed at times. I do remember one special birthday that made me realize how important family means to me. On March 22, 1979, it was a warm, beautiful, breezy, summer day, and I could hear the chirping of baby birds in their nest. Upon my face shined the bright sun through my bedroom window. This day represented my birth right of turning fourteen years old, and I needed to figure out what to wear on this special occasion. As I walked toward my closet door, there was a breeze of warm spring sunflowers gathering in each corner of my bedroom. As I inhaled this delightful smell, I thought of my favorite sunflower dress to wear. The length went below my knees and it had two straps on each shoulder. The base color of my dress was pure white cotton material with medium sunflowers patterns around the bottom. I chose my flat flip-flop scandals and brushed my hair into a ponytail with a white ribbon tied in a bow. At that moment in my life, I felt...

...Technology is a powerful tool we can use to improve the way of life, but if used in the wrong way it can become a terrible thing. One example of this is the rigid control of reproduction through technological and medical intervention, including the removal of ovaries, the Bokanovsky Process, and the conditioning of children. Another example is the way people are designed to not feel or care about many things in their everyday lives. Soma is a third example of the kind of medical, biological, and psychological technologies that shape Brave New World. Technology is a very helpful and useful tool, but like any other power in the world, if used for the wrong reasons, it can become a dangerous thing. People in Brave new World took technology to...

...The world is getting smaller. With the advent of the internet, online communications, smart phones, and social network applications, the world is indeed getting smaller. Whenever my father holds his smart phone and calls a friend or a relative abroad through smart phone applications such as viber, magic jack, and whatsapp, he would always stare at his smart phone, in this case his iPhone, with utter amazement. This would always be followed up with him saying, “technology is amazing! Back in my day calling someone in another country was so costly. If you communicated by writing to each other through telegram it was also costly and it would take so long before the person would receive it. Now, I can just open my email, type up a letter and *poof* it is sent and received in a second. I can call my friends in the states for free with viber and whatsapp or magic jack! The world is getting smaller. I can talk on the phone with my bestfriend living in America as if he were just across the street from me. Technology makes the world so small.” His rant about the wonders of technology and how it can help make some things in our lives so much easier and faster can go on and on and on....

...Technology is defined as using the entire body of science, methods, and materials to achieve an end. Technology, or techne, is so preoccupied with weather it can, it never considers if it should. In "Of Techne and Episteme," a article on technology and humanities, the author Eddy warns us that a society without epistemological thinking would lead to a society of "skilled barbarians." This is the topic of the novel Brave New World in which Aldous Huxley portrays a future world where babies are manufactured on an assembly line and put into a social class while they are still embryos in a test tube. As children they are engineered to be content with their rank in this world where love, viviparous reproduction, and knowledge of anything beyond your job serves no purpose. A look at Brave New World supports Eddy's beliefs on the importance of humanities in society because of unethical genetic experimentation and the character's lack of individuality. The society of Brave New World has gained the knowledge to produce babies much like their God, Henry Ford, produced the Model T. They have taken this technology and exploited it for their own benefit. They have created with their hands without using their head or heart. Scientists toy with the embryos, cutting off oxygen to those predestined to become lower caste members. Those chosen to work as rocket plane engineers were in constant rotation during the embryonic phase of their life. "Doing repairs on the outside of...

...Luis Marte Biology and technology in the real world BIOL 103 Introduction to Biology Genetically modified organisms February 7, 2016 Genetic engineering generally refers to the use of tools of modern biotechnology and molecular biology to specifically introduce or alter characteristics or traits in organisms. Scientists can use these tools to introduce new genetic material, or delete existing genetic material to introduce intended new or altered traits or characteristics. Many kinds of GE animals are in development. At this time, the largest class of GE animals is being developed for biopharm purposes—that is, they are intended to produce substances (for example, in their milk) that can be used as human or animal pharmaceuticals. Another group of GE animals are under development for use as sources of scarce cells, tissues, or organs for transplantation into humans (xenotransplant sources). Yet others are intended for use as food and may be disease resistant, or have improved nutritional or growth characteristics. And others include animals that produce high value industrial or consumer products, such as highly specific antimicrobials against human and animal pathogens (e.g., E. coli 0157 or Salmonella). ...Disabilities in people can be from hearing lose or to an extreme case as being blind. Even people with disabilities have a right to learn just like people with no disabilities. Certain hardware and software designs have been created by many people to help these disabilities people thru their everyday struggle. I chose four devices that show how they help these individuals. The first software I have chosen is the Co:Writer 4000. This software is used in sync with software like word processor or story-writing program. It is a type-and-speak writing assistant, created to aid users to write complete and correct sentences with little keystrokes. This software was produced by Don, Johnston, Inc. Reference: http://www.indiana.edu/~iuadapts/technology/software/cowriter/index.html Next is hardware called the Maltron Mouth / Head Stick Keyboard. This keyboard is designed for people who cannot use their hands. They simply push the keyboard that is in front of their face with an object, such as a pencil, to hit the keys. This keyboard is produced by Maltron. Reference : http://www.maltron.com/keyboard-info/maltron-mouth--head-stick-keyboard.html The Braille Edge 40 is a hardware I chose next. It is made for the blind mainly and helps them to be able to read, take notes, have scheduled reminders, calculate, etc. This hardware is produced and sold by HIMS. ...GMOS GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, have been around for about 40 years now. A genetically modified organism is a plant or animal whose genes or “DNA” have been modified in such a way that the product is not naturally found in nature or through natural cross-breeding. Traditionally, the genes with the desired characteristic are introduced to the genes of the plant/animal that is being genetically modified. This results in a plant that is very similar to the original, but contains varying amounts of genetic change. Many GMOs have been modified in such a way that they can withstand a certain kind of herbicide, or survive certain kinds of harsh climate conditions; while others have been modified so that they can produce a certain kind of pesticide to ward off would-be crop killing insects. Through these modifications genetically modified organisms are touted as lasting longer, and producing more abundant crop yields. Also, organisms that have undergone modification require fewer pesticides, water, and reduce production costs for crops used for food, such as soybeans, corn, and sugar beets (www.factsaboutgmos.org). According to the USDA, the most common kinds of GMOs are corn, cotton, and soybeans, but a variety of foods can be found in your local supermarket that have been genetically modified, and according to the Non-GMO Project, up to 80% of processed foods in the United States contain food items that are genetically modified. The issue as to whether or not...

...society has developed and grown through advances in technology. These have proved both advantageous and detrimental to society as a whole. Technology has helped connect the world and help make everybody happier. However, at what cost? When does technology cease to be beneficial and begin its destruction? Technology has led to the illusion of multitasking, the chronic and widespread abuse of prescription drugs, and the downfall of society as a whole through virtual realities. The article “Why the modern world is bad for your brain”, by Daniel J Levitin shines light on many of the societal norms in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. “Multitasking has been found to increase the production of the stress hormone cortisol as well as the fight-or-flight hormone adrenaline, which can...

...Upon entering the “Squat Grey Building” that is the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre; you will see the motto of the World State: Community, Identity, and Stability. These three words reflect the ultimate goal of the Utopia that is the World State. “Community” means that everyone within the Utopia must work together to maximize happiness for the society as a whole. “Identity” refers to the five classes of hereditary social groups that are created through genetic engineering. Finally, “Stability” refers to the ultimate goal of the Utopia. By creating similar people and censoring and controlling actions, the society looks to minimize conflict, risk, and overall change. The three goals of the World State are completely controlled through the use of science and technology in Brave New World, which thereby stripped its residents of all social aspects and personal freedoms. By creating the Brave New World Huxley shows the importance of technology and progress to society, which makes us stop and consider how our current progress and advancements in technology have affected our society as a whole. Before looking into how people in the World State are restricted from having any free will, it is important to define what it means to be human. In my opinion, all humans are born with free will. I would define free will as the equal and inalienable rights to be an individual who can make their own choices. The ability to act at one’s own discretion without constraint...
