...1 “Worship” Mary Willis PAST_6013C Robby Pearson 2 As I read Whitney’s chapter pertaining to worship, I began to reflect on the past couple of weeks and my time of worship with God. There are different reasons to worship; however, there are the two main reasons are we are called to worship by God. In Matthew 4:10, Jesus is obedient to the Old Testament command “Worship the Lord your God” (80). The second most important reason to worship is to appreciate at the one who saves us from our sins. It is a privilege to worship our Lord. We were called, and we must obey. Psalm 95:6 represents how worshiping is a privileged duty, “Come, let us bow down and worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker” (80). In definition, it is highly difficult to define the word worship because there are so many different meanings related to the word; however, according to Whitney the word worship means “God is to ascribe the proper worth to God, to magnify His worthiness of praise, or better, to approach and address God as He is worthy (81).” This definition encompasses the true meaning of worship. I believe in today’s society, speaking from experience, we are too caught up in the cycle of life to appreciate God’s blessings in life. I have fallen short of this many of times. Often my excuse is I am too busy to stop to look at the beauty in His creation or stop and reflect on His work in my life. The more we invest into our creator, the more we see how worthy He is to us. ...Worship What is Worship? By definition, worship is ascribing worth to something or someone. But true worship is also a matter of the heart. It must be felt. It can't be ritualistic. It can't be just an external going through the motions. True worship is a heartfelt expression of love, adoration, admiration, fascination, wonder, and celebration. It's something that happens in your heart and soul when you begin to praise God for who He is and thank Him for what He has done. Worship is what empowers followers of Jesus to live faithfully in the world. In worship our minds take in wisdom, our hearts are moved, and our whole beings are called to live out the gospel. People have worshiped, and praised God since the beginning of time. One of the best stories of worship towards God is noted in Isaiah 6, “ In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke (v.1–4).” Worship brings an upward look, with one glance at God on His throne with all of His glory. It is so very easy to be swept away by sound, smell, sight, and taste. It is so very convenient to let the music worship for us, and it is so common to only worship when we feel swept away. It takes much more courage to maintain a spirit of worship, regardless of what we hear, smell, see, or taste. We maintain this spirit of worship when we don’t like the music that’s being played, and we worship God anyway. We maintain this spirit of worship in the monotonous, gray periods of life, when nothing seems to sweep us away. We maintain this spirit of worship in the bitter cold, in the pools of blood, and in the wells of despair that inevitably come alongside the extraordinary joys and miracles of love. ...Pentecostal Worship Assessment I affiliate myself with an ancient style of worship, mostly because is what I grew up around, but I do not currently attend a church. I decided to go to a Pentecostal church service, I was intrigued with the idea of attending a church service where the prominent form of worshipping God is through singing. On Sunday April 9, I attended the church, The Pentecostals of Katy. I decided to go there because in their website they describe their service as a “Sunday night revival service”. We will look at the five types of worship and summaries for each of them, why they play an important part. The burnt sacrifice shown in Leviticus one is the most important of all the sacrifices offered to God. This is mainly because it expressed dedication. This sacrifice, unlike any other, was wholly consumed and is also described as the whole burnt offering. Offerings would be graded in value so that even the poorest worshippers might find access to God by coming in complete devotion. The sacrifices signified that the whole of man, for whom the sacrifice was offered, was to be entirely offered or devoted to God's service. It is amusing that the meat offering in Leviticus 2 was the one offering that did not consist of meat. The proper translation is “meal offering,” which would be an offering of grain or cereals made of fine flour. The word translated ‘meat’ in Hebrew simply means a present. The primary idea behind this this offering is that it is a gift presented to God as an act of worship. Yet, because this offering was the product of the soil and the result of man's labor, it symbolized the consecration of the results of worship to God. I really struggled through this section. I do realize the importance of this subject however; the “feel good” moments just aren’t there like when you read other books of the bible. I mean, idolatry and ritualism are subjects that can be incredibly dry. But when asked to make it parallel to events of today I have found it to be shockingly intriguing. For example, the prophets played a key role in attempting to turn Israel away from its disastrous path of worshipping false idols. I don’t know, maybe it was the fact that they were tangible? I know that easily, the toughest part of the Christian walk is faith without sight. How easy would living this life be if we could touch or see God? You can touch and see false idols. Ezekiel 8 captured my attention completely. It paints such a vivid picture of how God sees us when we turn away from him. The entire chapter is of this vision given by a figure with flames from the waist down and gold from the waist up. He is taken to three different locations within Jerusalem and shown detestable images in God’s sight. Romans 12:1 says that, “ Therefore brothers, I urge you, in view of God’s mercy, live your lives as a pleasing and holy sacrifice to God, that is your spiritual act of worship.” Though the verse does not give a clear detail on what worship is, it also dictates that worship expands to so much more than the Sunday morning service and the contents of the service.
