...Worship What is Worship? By definition, worship is ascribing worth to something or someone. But true worship is also a matter of the heart. It must be felt. It can't be ritualistic. It can't be just an external going through the motions. True worship is a heartfelt expression of love, adoration, admiration, fascination, wonder, and celebration. It's something that happens in your heart and soul when you begin to praise God for who He is and thank Him for what He has done. Worship is what empowers followers of Jesus to live faithfully in the world. In worship our minds take in wisdom, our hearts are moved, and our whole beings are called to live out the gospel. People have worshiped, and praised God since the beginning of time. One of the best stories of worship towards God is noted in Isaiah 6, “ In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke (v.1–4).” Worship brings an upward look, with one glance at God on His throne with all of His glory. It pulls our attentions off our idols and puts them back of to our God. It reminds...

...Worship, Courage, and Fear “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16 “Sing with your head up, with your eyes closed; not because you love the song, but because you love to sing.” – Aaron Marsh. It is so very easy to be swept away by sound, smell, sight, and taste. It is so very convenient to let the music worship for us, and it is so common to only worship when we feel swept away. It takes much more courage to maintain a spirit of worship, regardless of what we hear, smell, see, or taste. We maintain this spirit of worship when we don’t like the music that’s being played, and we worship God anyway. We maintain this spirit of worship in the monotonous, gray periods of life, when nothing seems to sweep us away. We maintain this spirit of worship in the bitter cold, in the pools of blood, and in the wells of despair that inevitably come alongside the extraordinary joys and miracles of love. Along with the courage of discipline, is the courage to overcome fear in worship. The fear that we’re not worthy to approach God, and the fear that he won’t accept us if we do… the fear that God only lovingly sweeps us away now and then, and that he isn’t present in the terrible or the terribly mundane… and the fear that God is the one who causes or allows unspeakable pain to occur in our lives. There’s also the fear of public worship, which is actually the fear of other...

...Pentecostal Worship Assessment I affiliate myself with an ancient style of worship, mostly because is what I grew up around, but I do not currently attend a church. I decided to go to a Pentecostal church service, I was intrigued with the idea of attending a church service where the prominent form of worshipping God is through singing. On Sunday April 9, I attended the church, The Pentecostals of Katy. I decided to go there because in their website they describe their service as a “Sunday night revival service”. Arriving, it was not hard to miss the building, the services take place in a traditional looking church. Walking inside, I felt welcomed by the congregation. The chairs in the church ara arranged in rows with space in between for people to walk around. The official start of the service was at 6:00 in the evening, even though they had a pre-service prayer session. On the inside, the first thing I noticed in the altar was the band and a projector screen that projected Hebrews 11:6 on one side of the altar and Acts 2:3 on the other. Service, was...

...What is Worship? Consider the meaning of the word. The English word worship is derived from an older Anglo-Saxon word weorthship which meant "to honor." Christian worship, whether individual or corporate, offers honor to God. Worship can and should characterize our daily life, we offer praise, adoration, and thanksgiving. As ministers through music, we must get out of the way and let God do his thing through us. Do we always get out of his way? No. We fail often and have to remind ourselves of just who our Audience is (i.e., God). But God is faithful! He has been drawing the church into his presence through worship for two millennia (not to mention the tabernacle & temple before that). God’s people have approached him over that time in numerous ways. Worship music is important to our worship experience as the Church body, and throughout history. John 4:24 “God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” • For us to worship God in spirit and in truth we must make sure we obey all of His commandments as given by Him in the Bible on how He is to be worshipped. • We must speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent. • As we sing, pray, give, partake of the communion, and as the gospel sermon is preached, it must be done according to God’s instructions in the Bible. The purpose of our worship is to glorify, honor, praise, exalt, and please God. Our worship must show our adoration and loyalty...

...The purpose of this paper is to explain how the chaplain/pastor leads in worship using the world of technology and how evangelical chaplains can provide worship in the military or corporate setting. Bryant and Brunson quotes George Barna in his book “Boiling Point” that, “10 to 20 percent of the population will rely on the Internet for their spiritual input by the year 2010 and if a church doesn't have a presence on the Web, then that church does not exist for most people.” It doesn’t matter if your church is a small or mega church, traditional, hybrid, or attractional church, there is a tremendous benefit in using technology to remain connected to people and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Brunson and Bryant points out that using “emails as a quick effective way to respond to questions and issues or to announce important events within the church, and many pastors are using “blogs” as a sounding board to clarify their thoughts and the direction of their churches or simply to share insights into current events.” Additionally, some pastors and churches utilize graphics via data projection systems, and online streaming as a means of leading worship not only to the local congregation but to others viewing the worship service from around the world. For example, my pastor is extremely focused on the utilization of technology in how worship is lead. One of the tools we use is “Live Stream.” We broadcast our Sunday services, Wednesday night services as well as most of our special...

...WORSHIP MANUAL by David C. Stone Third edition (May 1998) Revised (October 1998) © 1998 David C. Stone. All rights reserved. This document is very much a continuing effort. It is an attempt to express a theology and philosophy of corporate worship that is becoming increasingly prevalent in churches across both denominational and international borders. This third edition contains greatly expanded content in chapter 1 (The Meaning of Worship) and some additional material in chapter 2 (Corporate Worship). This includes corrections, additional references and a short Bible survey that fills in some of the background material to the text. The first revision finally includes the material on the Tabernacle (section 2.5) and the beginnings of a study on the history of worship (chapter 3, incomplete), as well as some minor section renumbering. I still fully intend to add a chapter on leading worship, but I got a little sidetracked! ...explaining the occasions for, and the correct procedures to be followed in, sacrifice. It is clear then that Sacrifice is important to Leviticus’ presentation of Israel’s worship. We will look at the five types of worship and summaries for each of them, why they play an important part. The burnt sacrifice shown in Leviticus one is the most important of all the sacrifices offered to God. This is mainly because it expressed dedication. This sacrifice, unlike any other, was wholly consumed and is also described as the whole burnt offering. Offerings would be graded in value so that even the poorest worshippers might find access to God by coming in complete devotion. The sacrifices signified that the whole of man, for whom the sacrifice was offered, was to be entirely offered or devoted to God's service. It is amusing that the meat offering in Leviticus 2 was the one offering that did not consist of meat. The proper translation is “meal offering,” which would be an offering of grain or cereals made of fine flour. The word translated ‘meat’ in Hebrew simply means a present. The primary idea behind this this offering is that it is a gift presented to God as an act of worship. Yet, because this offering was the product of the soil and the result of man's labor, it symbolized the consecration of the results of worship to God. The ingredients included are also hugely significant. The oil has been recognized as a...

...Written by Ryahn Hablitzel The proper use of music in worship remains a difficult topic in the Christian church. Music, intensely complex, can be interpreted in many different ways. Typically, the topic of music and worship is approached with considerable bias for or against certain forms; however, this topic will be approached with the assumption that appropriate worship styles are difficult to universally define because of complex cultural differences. Musical worship comprises a God-centered activity entirely focused on Him. In order for music to fulfill this purpose, inspired perspectives, musical linguistics, and a synthesis of current implications must be considered. An inspired perspective of musical worship Throughout the Bible, inspired writers conveyed their messages through the avenue of song. Moses and the children of Israel lifted their voices in inspired adoration to the Lord after being delivered from the Egyptians at the Red Sea. In Deuteronomy 32, Moses again uses music to impress the minds of his audience in a historical and prophetic utterance.1 The entire book of the Psalms presents a mixture of musical meditations clearly fixated upon the Torah and the Messiah. Clearly, God uses music as an avenue to impress truth upon His people. In addition to the impartation of biblical truth, inspired writers recognize music’s ability to turn the thoughts of worshipers toward God. Within the school of the prophets, “Music was made to serve a holy purpose, to lift...

(Harvey, 2009, p. 20) The focal point of the shrine is a box, which is built into the wall. In these boxes are kept the many charms without which no one of the tribe believes he/ she could survive without. (Harvey, 2009, p. 20) A charm is not disposed of after it has served its purpose, but is placed in the charm-box of the house shrine. The charm box is commonly full to overflowing as charms are specific for certain ills. (Harvey, 2009, p. 20) The quantity of charms in these boxes is so numerous that the people forget what their purpose was. (Harvey, 2009, p. 20) During times of worship, people use holy water, to sprinkle it in front of the shrine...

...PROPHETS: IDOLATRY, SOCIAL INJUSTICE, AND RELIGIOUS RITUALISM BIBL 105 OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY PROPHETS: IDOLATRY, SOCIAL INJUSTICE, AND RELIGIOUS RITUALISM I will be honest. I really struggled through this section. I do realize the importance of this subject however; the “feel good” moments just aren’t there like when you read other books of the bible. I mean, idolatry and ritualism are subjects that can be incredibly dry. But when asked to make it parallel to events of today I have found it to be shockingly intriguing. For example, the prophets played a key role in attempting to turn Israel away from its disastrous path of worshipping false idols. I don’t know, maybe it was the fact that they were tangible? I know that easily, the toughest part of the Christian walk is faith without sight. How easy would living this life be if we could touch or see God? You can touch and see false idols. Ezekiel 8 captured my attention completely. It paints such a vivid picture of how God sees us when we turn away from him. The entire chapter is of this vision given by a figure with flames from the waist down and gold from the waist up. He is taken to three different locations within Jerusalem and shown detestable images in God’s sight. I’ll just speak about the last paragraph in the chapter as you can almost feel God’s anger in the words. “He brought me to the inner court of the Lord’s temple. There, at the entrance of the Lord’s temple, between the porch and the altar, were 25 men facing...

...Paper Text Introduction It is now the final week of class and I must admit it was a very informative subject. We learned many aspects of theology, but I want to focus on prayer and its importance as well as the purpose of Bible study. Without a good understanding of prayer and knowing how to study the Bible you will struggle as a Christian. Part One – Importance of Prayer First let’s examine what prayer is. According to the dictionary, it is a solemn request for help or expression of thanks expressed to God or an object of worship. Usually when there is something bad happening in our life, this is when we pray. A family member suddenly becomes ill, the request for prayers are heard. In order to have effective prayer, we should not wait till something bad happens, rather we should be praying daily, John 15:7 says God responds to our prayers when we are abiding in Christ and the Word of God. I remember something my grandmother used to tell me all the time when I was troubled. She would say “turn it over to God, if you are worrying, then you are not praying, and if you are praying, then there is no need to worry.” The act of praying builds your personal relationship with God according to Towns. Part of becoming a Christian involves developing yourself to be more Christ like. It is so easy with our busy lifestyles to forget to pray during the good times. To become an obedient Christian, I must practice praying on a daily basis, not just when things are bad, but also to express...

...Midterm Essay To say that worship is solely what just happened in the worship service is a failure to give worship its full meaning. Romans 12:1 says that, “ Therefore brothers, I urge you, in view of God’s mercy, live your lives as a pleasing and holy sacrifice to God, that is your spiritual act of worship.” Though the verse does not give a clear detail on what worship is, it also dictates that worship expands to so much more than the Sunday morning service and the contents of the service. Throughout the Bible, there is a constant theme of God reaching down to His people, and in some way or another, rescuing His people. For example, He rescued His people from slavery and from the wrath of the pharaoh in Exodus, thus solidifying the promise of making the Israelites His people. When God rescued His people and brought them to the promised land, He gave them a set of laws, a way to live that responds to Him in a way that is pleasing to Him. The two foci of worship focuses on these points, the initiative God takes to reach His people, and the response of the people to God. When God rescue His people and when He gave them His word, He did something very unique, He formed a covenant with His people, choosing them to be His. For Israel’s part, they obeyed and lived according the to will of God. These ways to live became the book of the covenant, becoming the laws and lifestyles of God’s people. From here Israel’s worship began to shaped after God’s character, meeting and worshipping...

...2008. The differences between Latin Women Pray by Judith Ortiz Cofer and Things Cheaply Had by Taslima Nasarin are what is being worshiped, the setting and social status (Abcarian, Richard, Marvin Klotz, and Samuel Cohen. Literature: The Human Experience: Reading and Writing. Boston: Bedford/St. Martin's, 2007. Print.). There are a few similarities and differences between what is worshiped in Latin Women Pray and Things Cheaply Had. “If they get a jewel for their nose they lick feet for seventy days or so…” (Nasrin,T.C.H.). The women will become so desperate that they will do almost anything for material objects. “They pray to an Anglo God with a Jewish heritage” (Cofer, L.W.P). The Latino community worships more or less non-material objects whereas the Indian prostitutes worship jewels and oils for their hair. “If they get a small bottle of alta for their feet they spend three nights sleepless for sheer joy” (Nasrin, T.C.H). “Before his image they kneel Margarita Josephina Maria and Isabel…” (Cofer, L.W.P). The Prostitutes of India are willing to put their bodies through torture just to get a small ration of food or...
