Would You Still Light Up? The current electronic cigarette was introduced to the world in 2004. It had an initial optimistic objective to offer smokers a third choice, other than quitting or suffering the consequences of smoking. The new device almost seemed unreal; it was an electronic device resembling the look of a normal cigarette with inhalable doses from a vaporized solution of nicotine. This invention allowed the e-cigarette companies to thrive from drastically multiplying sales rates. However, as popularity of these devices were booming, researchers and experts in the medical and scientific field started throwing doubts and questions about the safety of the products that we should not disregard. The United States Food and Drug Administration was not able to provide us with a clear answer, however, the negative indication hinted that electronic cigarettes were not as safe as they sounded or seemed. The risks and dangers of electronic cigarettes seem too high before any further research because of the posed threats towards children, questionable effectiveness for smokers themselves, and the produced harmful secondhand vapor. Although there was not enough emphasis on the level of danger yet, the use of electronic cigarettes have proven to be harmful for children and young adults in many ways. For example, recently there was an incident in Kansas that curious children have swallowed the refill liquids of electronic cigarettes. This consumption of the liquids containing many different levels of nicotine can be life threatening for children. According to Dr. Stephen Thornton, medical director at the University of Kansas Hospital's Poison Control Center, some refill liquids contain extreme levels of nicotine dosages that could potentially kill a child or adult (Barr). A possible factor that could ignite this behavior due to curiosity is the many different

Dangers of Texting While Driving

...enough not being distracted by cell phones. Talking on a cell phone can make a person 1.3 times more likely to get into a crash, and even worse, texting can make a person twenty three times more likely to get into an accident. Getting behind the wheel is a big responsibility. Surely the roads would be a much safer place if cell phones were either put away for the duration of the drive or if there were an app or chip put into phones that detected if they went over ten miles per hour and shut the phones down. Texting and driving may be a dangerous task, but texting at a stop light or stop sign can be understandable. These tasks are performed with the car completely stopped, but even looking down at a cell phone at a light can cause you to miss the light change and hold up traffic, thus causing the people behind you to get mad at you for not paying attention. Even texting at a stop sign can slow up the pace of traffic. If someone were to text at a stop sign and there were other people approaching who saw that a person wasn’t going, they would assume they should go and this could lead to a potential accident. While texting at stop signs may be safer than texting at high rates of speed, it is still dangerous. Let’s...

Romeo

...Light Over Dark: The Choice Romeo and Juliet Didn’t Make The purpose of the light/dark motif in Romeo and Juliet is to show how Romeo and Juliet are unable to tell light from dark, or good from bad. I think everyone has the potential to distinguish what choices lead to “light” and what choices keep them in the “dark”. So Romeo and Juliet had that potential but I don’t think they wanted to know about that, since nothing else mattered to them but them. In this play, Romeo and Juliet do never make a clear choice of light over dark because they almost do not want to deal that decision in the middle of their romantic journey. They could have brought their situation which was becoming more of a mess each day, into the light by talking openly about it. However that would’ve ended the feud between the families that would have to be dealt with in some way and I’m sure Romeo and Juliet would not have lost their lives doing that. By ignoring their responsibilities and ignoring the darkness that was rising on them quickly both Romeo and Juliet allow tragedy to take them both. In the first scene, Romeo is depressed because his love for Rosaline is a one-way love. His parents are worried because Romeo spends all his time in the dark. Even when it is light, he shrouds himself in darkness to reflect his dreary mood: Away from the light steals home my heavy son / And private in his chamber pens himself / Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out / And makes himself an artificial night (I...

...concrete walk, to step over grassy seams and make your way, hands in pockets, through the silences, that was what Mr Leonard Mead most dearly loved to do. He would stand upon the corner of an intersection and peer down long moonlit avenues of pavement in four directions, deciding which way to go, but it really made no difference; he was alone in this world of A.D., 2053 or as good as alone, and with a final decision made, a path selected, he would stride off, sending patterns of frosty air before him like the smoke of a cigar. Sometimes he would walk for hours and miles and return only at midnight to his house. And on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows. Sudden grey phantoms seemed to manifest upon inner room walls where a curtain was still undrawn against the night, or there were whisperings and murmurs where a window in a tomb-like building was still open. Mr Leonard Mead would pause, cock his head, listen, look, and march on, his feet making no noise on the lumpy walk. For long ago he had wisely changed to sneakers when strolling at night, because the dogs in intermittent squads would parallel his journey with barkings if he wore hard heels, and lights might click on and faces appear and an entire street be startled by the passing of a lone figure, himself, in the early November evening. On this...

...can explain our observations. You reach for the switch and the light doesn't come on. What would you do next? Would you try the switch again? Did I flick it all the way first time? Then I would check to see if there was anything wrong with the electricity, by trying to turn on other lights in the house or looking to see if any electrical appliances were working. And so on and so forth until I found out why the light wasn't working. Do background research: The light doesn't come on the first time that I flick the switch. Based on experience I know a few potential causes of this observation, namely: faulty switch, no electricity, or burnt out light bulb. Using this background information I can then form a hypothesis as to why the light bulb didn't come on when I flicked the switch. Hypothesis: The light bulb didn't come on when I turned the switch because the light bulb has burnt out. Experiment: Take the old bulb and test it in a known working socket (at a neighbor's). Experiments should ideally have only two possible outcomes. Either they will support the hypothesis or disprove it. If the light doesn't work at my neighbor’s house then there is something wrong with the bulb. If it does then something else is causing the lack of light. Results: The old light bulb lights up when placed in a working socket at our neighbor’s house. Now we know that there is nothing wrong with that old bulb. But we still don't know why it didn't light in the first place. It's time...

Nonfiction Reaction Paper

...Nonfiction Reaction Paper ENG/125 Nonfiction Reaction Paper The nonfiction stories I have decided to write about are; “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone?” by Andrew Lam and “Salvation” by Langston Hughes. Both of these stories are about a significant event in the authors lives in which they choose to write about. “Salvation” is a story about the author trying to find his way into the church and finally see the light or Jesus so his soul will be saved and his sins forgiven. ; “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone?” was a writing about his mother having a hard time with the American culture and how her son, the author Andrew Lam, will be when he leaves home and how the traditions she raised him on slowly will disappear along with her when she passes along. Both stories seem to send a message of events in the author’s lives where they wrote about them because of certain memories in their lives, and I will briefly go through each story in different ways. Summary of Strategies by the Authors I think Langston Hughes in “Salvation” tries to get the reader to imagine a hot sweltering church on a balmy Sunday morning. This would be the setting for the young boy at 12 years of age trying to see Jesus in another aspect because he is becoming of age for the church. The authors strategy is not to confuse the reader but to make the reader understand that Langston was not lying about seeing Jesus but in fact did not believe in Jesus because he left the boy...

...By:Ruthy Shvalbe White walls. The window welcomed a quiet breeze. It was morning, but no sound of an alarm, it would not be necessary, he wouldn’t hear it anyway. He rolled onto his back, eyes open and slightly bloodshot, he blinked. He turned his head to the left. Another morning without her. Her pillow was still present, her watch was still lying there on the wooden night stand, unworn for months now. Her presence was still so strong, but she was absent. The heavy skin around his eyes made it seem only possible for a slow blink. Gravity stretching his wrinkled skin towards the ground, his mouth had a too be consciously held shut. He sat up. He turned to the right, into the warm rays of the sun. His feet stuck slightly to the wooden floor in-between each step, they were still warm from incubating under the sheets all night. He turned on the tap. The water began gushing out. He enjoyed the warm caress the water gave as it blanketed over his entire hand. He began to lather, his left hand taking care of his right hand first, in a circular motion, the soap got squeezed out from in between his fingers. Rinsing the soap off his hands he gave his face splash of water. His right hand turned the tap off. While he looked at his eyes in the mirror, he was a little older than yesterday. The dim light in the kitchen was just strong enough to assist his actions. He heated up some leftover dinner from last night in the microwave. He pulled out the leftovers from the microwave. Advantages of Technology

...Nowadays, people are really in to technology no matter how expensive a newly-released gadget is, they still manage to buy something than can satisfy their wants. We cannot blame them, technology has really improved today and having your own gadget will make you feel that you really belong to this generation. Having our own thing for the fast-changing technology, we are delighted to say that like a normal gadget, our invention has its own advantages and disadvantages. As you know, we will provide a portable light in a bag that won’t need any socket to light up. The wires that we used won’t heat up easily that can cause fire. In that case, we assure you that our invention is safe, yet there are still circumstances that may occur. Our invention will be a big help to you especially when you are a person who usually carry necessary things for work, school, etc., because the base material is said to be a bag. Its light can enlighten your way if you are walking on a sidewalk without any street lamp at night which will make the motorists be aware and may prevent such accidents. The primary concern in the invention is durability. It matters on the design you’ll be using. If the design you ought to make requires a lot of flexing the wires, then that would be a little hitch on how durable the EL Wires can be. Furthermore, this won’t be washable. The wire itself is water resistant, and can withstand small amount of rain or some han-washing, but if it is fully immersed, the ends of the wire...

...hands up. When looking at this painting you view quickly from the right to the left and can almost feel the inevitable execution. There is also a line in the sand separating the light from the dark. Seems to be imply between the good of the Spaniards who are about to be executed, from the evil hooded men who are shooting. I believe that there is an implied line between the end of the gun and the man with his arms up. It is giving an action that you can almost feel the gunshot from the barrel executing the man. Especially how when looking from right to left it goes from dark to light, like the gun has been fired. B.)Shape-The geometric shape of the lantern stands out to me right away. Its rectangular shape and the triangle shape of the light which it creates draw my eye in this painting. It seems to paint a positive light on the people that are about to be executed. There are many more geometric shapes in this painting than organic. The organic shapes that I see are the rounded hill in the background and the contours that are created in the sand. These two in the painting are good examples of biomorphic shapes. C.)Mass-The mass is implied here and is created by the forms of the captives. They seem to go in all directions here with their arms and the way each is bent. It really creates urgency that they are about to be shot. There is no actual mass in this painting as this is seen in 3-dimensional art. It is the physical bulk of a solid body of material. You can only...

The End of the Party -Text

...Peter Morton woke with a start to face the first light. Rain tapped against the glass. It was January the fifth. He looked across a table on which a night-light had guttered into a pool of water, at the other bed. Francis Morton was still asleep, and Peter lay down again with his eyes on his brother. It amused him to imagine it was himself whom he watched, the same hair, the same eyes, the same lips and line of cheek. But the thought palled, and the mind went back to the fact which lent the day importance. It was the fifth of January. He could hardly believe a year had passed since Mrs Henne-Falcon had given her last children's party. Francis turned suddenly upon his back and threw an arm across his face, blocking his mouth. Peter's heart began to beat fast, not with pleasure now but with uneasiness. He sat up and called across the table, "Wake up." Francis's shoulders shook and he waved a clenched fist in the air, but his eyes remained closed. To Peter Morton the whole room seemed to darken, and he had the impression of a great bird swooping. He cried again, "Wake up," and once more there was silver light and the touch of rain on the windows. Francis rubbed his eyes. "Did you call out?"' he asked. "You are having a bad dream," Peter said. Already experience had taught him how far their minds reflected each other. But he was the elder, by a matter of minutes, and that brief extra interval of light, while his brother still struggled in pain and darkness, had given him...

The Scientific Method

...it. Purpose/Question- What do you want to learn? An example would be, "What doorknob in school has the most germs ?" or "Do girls have faster reflexes than boys?" or "Does the color of a light bulb affect the growth of grass seeds?" Research- Find out as much as you can. Look for information in books, on the internet, and by talking with teachers to get the most information you can before you start experimenting. Hypothesis- After doing your research, try to predict the answer to the problem. Another term for hypothesis is 'educated guess'. This is usually stated like " If I...(do something) then...(this will occur)" An example would be, "If I grow grass seeds under green light bulbs, then they will grow faster than plants growing under red light bulbs." Experiment- The fun part! Design a test or procedure to find out if your hypothesis is correct. In our example, you would set up grass seeds under a green light bulb and seeds under a red light and observe each for a couple of weeks. You would also set up grass seeds under regular white light so that you can compare it with the others. If you are doing this for a science fair, you will probably have to write down exactly what you did for your experiment step by step. Analysis- Record what happened during the experiment. Also known as 'data'. Conclusion- Review the data and check to see if your hypothesis was correct. If the grass under the green light bulb grew faster, then you proved your hypothesis, if not,...

Jane Addams: A Short Story

...It was May 22nd when my telephone rang. I picked up the phone with surprise not expecting a call from anyone. "Hello, is Ruth Bishop home?" the male voice asked. "Yes, this is she" I quickly answered. He took a deep breath and then said with remorse "Last night Jane Addams passed away, I'm sorry." I was shocked. " Her funeral is tomorrow at 11 am at the Walter L Sojka funeral home, I was also asked to see if you could give her eulogy?" A tear streamed down my face as I responded " Of course, thank you for letting me know." He quickly responded " You're welcome, I'm sorry for your loss." I hung up the phone and took a seat on my leather love seat that faced the window and started weeping. My husband came in and sat next to me "What's wrong?" he asked as he put a loving hand on my back. I looked up at him and took a few deep breaths to stop my crying.
