Write about a ceremony that you have attended
Easter, three years ago I went to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for my uncle’s wedding. I went with my parents, sister and most of my family from my mother’s side, which live in Britain. I chose to write about this ceremony because it was very memorable to me. I was able to see a lot of my family that I have not seen in many years. It was great to catch up with my aunts and uncles; and their children. This wedding was also a different experience to the Indian weddings that I have been to, here in Britain.
In the morning of the wedding day all of the groom’s family drove in a coach to the wedding venue, which had a motel right next door, which we had stayed in for the day. Everyone had dressed in their traditional outfits, the women wore gorgeous and vibrantly coloured saris from bright pinks to dark blues and beautiful, sparkling jewellery; the men wore long cream and maroon tops with matching trousers and shoes that were pointed. We gathered in the empty car park where the groom sat in an opened roof, old style white car. The women from his family stood in front of the car in a small crowd and started to sing and dance to the beat of an Indian drum called a ‘dhol’, which was long and goes around the player’s neck by a fat strap. The drummer hit both sides of the drum with one thick stick and one thin stick, to an upbeat rhythm. As everyone is dancing and singing, you could see the sun reflect of the small jewels on the women’s outfits and jewellery, the sound of the bangles hitting each other with every movement and the children laughing and shrieking. Once this procession had reached the wedding hall the groom had to receive his blessings from his parents, and greet the bride’s family before everyone took their seats.
As I walked into the warm hall, I could smell the subtle hint of incense sticks and flowers. The
